Advantages: Very pretty and Laid back culture. Disadvantages: Food is expensive
I got back from amsterdam about 2 weeks ago. It was booked as suprise from my husband for my birthday. I have to admit that when he told me we were going there I was really disappointed as I wanted to go somewhere like Paris or Venice, but now after being there I have to eat my words because I loved it. I will explain the best and the worst bits and you can make your own mind up
Hotels
Our hotel was slap bang in the centre. 5 minutes from the train ... ...thing that put me of Amsterdam initially, but having experienced it, you find its not as in-your-face as you think. Its almost made to feel normal. there are many shops which sell various sexual things and people dont bat an eyelid at anyone going in or coming out of these places. If you are the type of person that is easily offended then it may be too much for you but I personally think that Amsterdam has so much to offer that you kind of forget ...

In Amsterdam you can sit in a pub all morning, all afternoon, all evening, without fear of getting kicked out for making a beer or a coffee last for hours. For the owner to show you the door would be very un-gezellig. The very fact that you can’t do that in Starbucks goes to prove a point about the British.
The Dutch simply worry about a lot less than we do; they’re more chilled out. They probably think us Brits too uptight, ... ...loved it too.
Visiting Amsterdam is easy, even for us lazy Brits on those long weekend trips, as the Dutch all speak perfect English and unlike some begrudging Europeans they’re happy to use it.
Amsterdam really is a great place to be. With it’s wonderful architecture and fantastic art it engenders a positive feeling within, unlike stressful metropolitan cities with all their hustle and bustle.
Perhaps this is because few Dutch drive cars and ...

Advantages: Beautiful culture Disadvantages: Cost of accomodation
Amsterdam is the capital and largest city in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It's on the IJ, which is an arm of the Ijsselmeer, and a ship canal links it to the North sea. Along with being a major centre of the diamond cutting industry, the city has one of the world's most important stock exchanges. It is also the home to many museums, one of which is the Rijksmuseum, this museum houses a large collection of Dutch paintings, it ...

Advantages: Its not far away and theres lots to see and do Disadvantages: costs may be more than expected
Amsterdam has plenty to offer in all departments.
One minute you can be sitting in a friendly bar with a drink, the next visiting one of the world's great centres of culture, such as the Van Gogh Museum.
The trams make it easy to get around town, just hop on and off, just watch out for them when crossing the street! Also look out for the bicycles everywhere, this is a bustling but friendly city and great for a long weekend, or even just a night's ... ...for anyone looking for that sort of good time, although it is still very popular and clients and their chosen escort can be seen every night, as can some fiarly explicit windows of sex toys in some of the local shops.
However, the city has old world charm, in addition to the canels, the traditional buildings with their gabled rooves, and even some of the more modern buildings are worth a look.
You may spend more than intended if you visit a few ...

Since I live in Amsterdam let's give some basic info on the main bar and restaurant areas in Amsterdam.
There are three main areas where you will find lot's of bars, restaurants and other places worth visiting:
The Leidseplein Area.
-Is the most wellknown and biggest area centered around the Leidseplein (Leidse Square). Here you will find lots of bars and dancings and restaurants. This area is most popular with tourists since the bars are very ... ...in all kinds of flavors.
The Rembrandplein area.
-A little smaller area, centered around the Rembrandplein. The bars here are more 'Dutch' so you'll here more typical Dutch music, karaoke and stuff. Here you'll also find some of the largest discotheques in Amsterdam, where they play mainly house music (not all of them).Less tourists and more Dutch people. Also close to some of the main gay areas.
The Nieuwmarkt area.
-Situated by the redlight ...

Advantages: good atmosphere Disadvantages: bit pricey
My trip to Amsterdam was brilliant, and it was definatley because of where we stayed. We stayed in a place called Leidesplein, which offers the best nightlife in Amsterdam. All night restaurants, bars and cafes with brilliant atmoshperes for foreigners, probably because half the people there are foreigners themselves.
Avoid the clubs, unless you find a place that specialises in your musical tastes. But they are likely to be filled with Dutch people, ... ...are going to Amsterdam for the nightlife, Leidesplein is the best place to go.
A bar I would suggest would be a place with stand up comediens called
Boom Chicago on Leidesplein 12. And a nice cafe was Rookies,on Leidsedwars-straat 145.
And one more thing, watch out for the bikes. ...

Advantages: Great food, tons of culture Disadvantages: Watch the seedy element and begging
I only went for a short break which was enough to get a really good taster of what it's like but also enought to show me there's far too much to see and do in only a few days!
The museums were good - even if you don't fancy culture much! I went to the Van Gogh museum and loved it, even though i usually hate art galleries. Also went to the Anne Frank House, which I would definitely recommend and defy antone not to be shocked or moved. On the lighter ... ...cheap entry, interesting and some parts were amusing and some wince-inducing!) and the sex museum (which I didn't go to- not enought time!). Canal trips and bike hire aplenty. The food was stunning! Hearty Dutch breakfast to set you up for the day; excellent pizzas (best I've EVER had) and a fantastic floating chinese restaurant, which was next to our reasonable floating hotel, just minutes from the Central station (warning, thought the floating ...

Amsterdam has many advantages. For the British visitor in paticular, it's close, easy to get to, and the population almost all speak English. For everyone, the accomodation has a wide range, and is present in copious quantities, it's clean, pleasent, relatively safe (watch out for the bicycle lanes) and relatively cheap. You can get up to virtually anything - the coffee bars offer a relaxed and friendly atmosphere (beer ... ...are friendly and helpful, there's a lot of interest to see, whether you have something specific in mind or would just like to enjoy the beautiful historic architecture of the town. There's a fair bit on offer for tourists, and a lot that's for anyone.
Whether you stay for a weekend or a week, you will not be bored. Enjoy.
(By the way - I don't smoke dope or drink booze, yet I still had an excellent time... don't let the cliche fool you). ...

Advantages: near Disadvantages: watch out pestering scum
I went to Amsterdam in the summer of 2000, I don't know why. I had heard about what goes on there and deep down I knew that I would not really like this place. I went shortly after the football riots and so I had a feeling that being a Brit the people there may be a bit cold towards us. I was correct in thinking this, I also found the people there to be very cold and just wanting to take as much money off you as possible, they are not hospitable. ... ...and do the redlight (which by the way I was just an observer) but it's a place that I found to be over rated. When going to some bars I found that they tried to over charge us because the money is a bit confusing, also when you go to the toilets you are expected to pay even though you have just spent a fortune on drinks. One place we went to I sat down had a drink then just chatted with my friends. The bar maid then rudely came up to me and said ...

I think Amsterdam has got to be my favourite city in the world and if you have never been I recommend you visit it. The city is beautiful with its many canals. Amsterdam is a very lively place, with lots of different things to do. I enjoyed going on the canal trips as there are alot of canals here. The boat i went on at night also does a lovely candlelit dinner, which if you are in a close relationship,is perfect way to express yourself.
You can also if you are into museums and history, go and visit the museums and i suggest The Anne Frank house as it is very interesting to see. Accomdation can be expensive but they have hostels which can be cheaper. Also just over from the railway station they have a Tourist Centre which can help with everything. Amsterdam is also known for its Diamonds, do check this out aswell. There is so much packed into this city. ...

We arrived at about 3.00am in the morning and our first impressions we quite good. The city really does buzz, and never sleeps.
