I visited Anne Frank's House on a visit to Amsterdam last week. 6 of us went on the trip and the only thing that we all agreed we wanted to see was Anne Frank's House. I wanted to see it, as being a historian this was one of the most important sites in the city. Others had read the book or even just heard Anne mentioned in passing. The thing was that everyone knew something about the story of Anne, which is pretty remarkable in itself, that a small girl's diary could become so famous. THE BACKGROUND: Most people will know at least the basics of Anne's story, but here's a reminder. Anne was a ... more

    Advantages Advantages Interesting and informative.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages No disabled access.

The Anne Frank House, Amsterdam At the end of March 2012 during a trip to Amsterdam we decided to take a trip to the former house of Anne Frank which has now been turned into a museum. A Little Bit of History When I was at school I have a vague memory of briefly learning about Anne Frank. So vague is this memory that I have to admit I hardly knew a thing about her, other than she was Jewish and was in hiding during the war. Shameful as it sounds I didn't even know the location of her hiding place! No comment on the standard of our history lessons! Regardless of my lack of education regarding ... more

Advantages Advantages A great musuem for all ages - much more than just a collection of objects

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not fully accessible to wheel chair users or people with limited mobilty

With not much more than thirty hours to spend in Amsterdam (and still eat, drink and sleep!), I was forced to make some tough decisions about what could and couldn't be done. In the end I decided that I should visit the Anne Frank House, partly because it ws raining heavily and it was obvious that it was time to do some indoor activities and partly because I had visited Auschwitz earlier in the year and am very interested in this period of history. Background ------------------ Anne Frank was born in Germany in 1929. In 1933, Otto Frank and his wife, Edith, decided to leave Germany with Anne ... more

Advantages Advantages An interesting look back at history, something serious to think about in the midst of a vibrant city

Disadvantages Disadvantages It didn't really bring the Anne Frank 'story' to life for me

I have an appalling confession to make. I thought myself pretty aware of Anne Frank’s life, having skimmed her diary many years ago and watched umpteen documentaries and films based on her experience as a Jew in hiding during the Holocaust. However, I thought with all my heart that she spent the war years hiding from the Nazi's in Germany. So while wandering around Amsterdam I was slightly surprised to see a sign reading (in Dutch of course) ‘The House of Anne Frank.’ I followed the route really just expecting some small memorial to the Frank family outside the house, but as soon as I realised ... more

You may have read my recent opinion on the city of Amsterdam itself, well one of the attractions l had penciled in as my number one place to visit was house where Anne Frank lived or Anne Frankhuis. This is easily found either by canal boat or on foot at Prinsengrancht 263. Entrance was 12 Guilders - whis is about £4.50 - not too bad. The building dates back to 1635 and it shows the rooms where the yound Jewish girl along with family and friends hid during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam from 1942 until 1944. I would advise that you get here early. We arrived on a Wednesday morning about 9 ... more

Advantages Advantages a very moving learning experience

Disadvantages Disadvantages long queues of people

The Anne Frank House, on the Prinsengracht, was the foremost in my mind, when I visited Amsterdam. The place I had wanted to visit for over thirty years. Ever since I had first read "The Diary of Anne Frank". It is hard to imagine this quiet canalside street, echoing with the clatter of jackboots on the cobblestones, and the harsh, guttural commands as Dutch Jews were herded from their homes and onto trucks bound for who knew where? The tree-lined street looks to have changed little in the fifty years since. Other than the constant lines of people waiting to pay homage to a young girl whose ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Claustrophobic, eerie atmosphere

Het Achterhuis - the house behind - what Anne Frank had planned to call her book she was in the process of writing when her life was cruelly cut short. Anne Frank was a Jew who kept a diary during war town Amsterdam. She was in hiding with her family, another family, and a dentist friend on the Princengract , the same building that was used for her father's jam making company. Today the house she hid in is a museum, a timely reminder of what happened to millions of Jews, and what we can never let happen again. I walked to the Museum, and was easy to find on foot, although there is tram stops ... more

    Advantages Advantages very moving, well-presented

Disadvantages Disadvantages can get very busy, not accessible for people with walking difficulties

The Anne Frank House is well worth the visit if you are ever in Amsterdam. The house is Prinsengracht 263, and is easy to find as Amsterdam is very compact. Many of the boats touring Amsterdam's canals also stop off at the museum. Once inside the house you are shown a short video describing the anti-Jewish persecution of the Second World War, which led Anne, her family and four others to hide in the annexe of this remarkable building. Anne's father, Otto, ran a business in the front of the house, and the uppermost floors of the back annexe became their hiding place for over 2 years. Visitors ... more

Two years ago I went on a visit to Amsterdam (not for the pot), but to see The Ann Frank House which is in the centre of the city. I have a strong interest in things to do with the 2nd World War, & one of these is that of Ann Frank. Myself & Ann (some people might find this statement a bit odd) have similar backgrounds in our lives. We didn’t get on well with our mothers at the same age, we share the same weird sense of humour, had an elder sister, a pussycat, fell out with an older man (in her case Mr Dussel the dentist, mine my aunts elderly friend), & we both kept diaries recording everyday ... more

One of the most visited places in Amsterdam is Anne Frank’s House and is about a ten minute walk from Dam Square. When you get there, the odds are likely that there will be a long queue. Be patient as the wait is well worth it. The way the house is laid out is very simple and as you walk around the house you start to become aware of the difficulties of eight people going into hiding. There are video screens periodically through the house which have interviews and stories about the Frank’s decision to go into hiding. When I left the house I had a feeling of sadness and regret but also one of ... more
