Advantages: Very moving, not too pricey Disadvantages: No disabled access, not a huge amount of exibits
I visited Anne Frank's House on a visit to Amsterdam last week. 6 of us went on the trip and the only thing that we all agreed we wanted to see was Anne Frank's House. I wanted to see it, as being a historian this was one of the most important sites in the city. Others had read the book or even just heard Anne mentioned in passing. The thing was that everyone knew something about the story of Anne, which is pretty remarkable in itself, that a small ... ...but here's a reminder. Anne was a Jew, living with her father, mother and sister in Amsterdam. She was born in 1929 in Germany. When the Nazi party came to power the Frank family decided that Germany was no longer safe and they moved to Amsterdam. They thought they were safe, until 1940 when the German army invaded the Netherlands.
The Diary itself was begun before the family went into hiding. Anne received it for her 13th birthday in June 1942. ...

I would recommend a visit to this place - it is surrounded by an air of quiet contemplation and respect, everyone is lost in thought - trying hard to imagine the hardship of living in such a manner. To find out more information visit ...

The Anne Frank House, on the Prinsengracht, was the foremost in my mind, when I visited Amsterdam. The place I had wanted to visit for over thirty years. Ever since I had first read "The Diary of Anne Frank". It is hard to imagine this quiet canalside street, echoing with the clatter of jackboots on the cobblestones, and the harsh, guttural commands as Dutch Jews were herded from their homes and onto trucks bound for who knew where? The tree-lined ... ...And then to remember that Anne was one person of millions. Not just Jews, but Romany gypsies, the mentally ill, and any other deemed undesirable in that awful time. Had she lived, how great might her talent have become? And, taking hers as the story of just one, how can we ever begin to imagine the immense talents in all walks of life, that were lost forever during this period?
The Anne Frank House now owns the building next door, which was being ...

...the house behind - what Anne Frank had planned to call her book she was in the process of writing when her life was cruelly cut short.
Anne Frank was a Jew who kept a diary during war town Amsterdam. She was in hiding with her family, another family, and a dentist friend on the Princengract , the same building that was used for her father's jam making company.
Today the house she hid in is a museum, a timely reminder of what happened to millions ... ...video of people close to Anne talking about her and her family. There are also signs on the walls, adverts for Anne's father's company and other memorabilia. Upon reaching the staircase, I finally understood why she mentioned in the diary that a cloth was nailed to the door. Up a flight of incredibly steep stairs, and you're into the house itself...
I would like to describe in detail what the house was like, but I can't. It was small and cramped, ...

Advantages: very moving, well-presented Disadvantages: can get very busy, not accessible for people with walking difficulties
The Anne Frank House is well worth the visit if you are ever in Amsterdam. The house is Prinsengracht 263, and is easy to find as Amsterdam is very compact. Many of the boats touring Amsterdam's canals also stop off at the museum.
Once inside the house you are shown a short video describing the anti-Jewish persecution of the Second World War, which led Anne, her family and four others to hide in the annexe of this remarkable building. Anne's father, ... ...stars on the wall in Anne Frank's room that she used to give it some character. Once you leave the annexe you can see Anne's original diary and an exhibition looking at the histroy of anti-Semitism. There is also a well-stocked museum shop.
More than 500,000 people visit the Anne Frank House yearly, so it is often very busy with long queues to get in. My advice is to arrive early - the museum opens at 9am Monday-Saturday and 10am on Sundays. When ...

Advantages: Excellent value, historical interest, well planned Disadvantages: Poor disabled access, long queue if not booked online
A must-see in Amsterdam. It was very moving, and sobering to understand what the families in hiding went through before meeting their terrible fates.
The museum is well planned, and you walk through from room to room, sometimes up very steep steps, so this might not be suitable for the very elderly or disabled.
We spent around 45 minutes there, and did not rush, but walked slowly through each room, reading the various displays and bits of information. ... ...queue when we arrived at 9.45am was already long, and by the time we left it was considerably longer still, wrapping round the building.
The best tip we can give is to book your tickets on the official web site. You have to choose your specific day and time (within hourly time slots), but with a bit of forward thinking this should not be a problem. By booking your tickets in advance, you skip past the whole queue, and enter straight in via a separate ...
