Advantages: The best custard tarts in the world! Disadvantages: None!
The "pasteis de nata" or custard tarts are one of the most popular delicacies found in cafes around Portugal and particularly in Lisbon, but these ones are just in a league of their own! They follow an ancient secret recipe that is passed on from generation to generation and is only known by two people in the whole world. They have this amazing crispy puff pastry shell that is so fine that it melts in your mouth and the most delicious custard-like ... ...and top it with cinnamon and icing sugar if you like.
If you're in a hurry, you can buy them to take away like most people do, but if you have time sit down and relax with a cup of espresso and appreciate the busy and friendly atmosphere and the beautiful surroundings. The interiors have been restored and kept as they were in the nineteenth century with lots of hidden corners, arched passages and hand-painted tile murals.
