The City of Sails

Advantages: Plenty to see and do
Disadvantages: Expensive to get to

Auckland is New Zealand's largest city, situated at the top of the North Island with a population of around 1.5 million. This represents about 33% of the population of the whole country! Auckland is also supposedly the second largest urban sprawl in the world, after Los Angeles, which might give you an impression of the size. The main city and suburbs cover an area of 60 square kilometres, with many of the suburbs having their own unique character. ...
...no real central area of Auckland like you would find in a typical English town or city. Each suburb has it's own characteristics and nightlife and are more like small towns within the city. There is a huge diversity in what goes on around the city, due to the number of travellers and long-staying foreigners in Auckland. Luckily, (if you're useless with languages like myself) you'll be pleased to find that English is the main written and spoken language ...

Don't rock the boat! Only 4 hours from Auckland!

Advantages: Great scenery, lots of activities, value for money
Disadvantages: Long way from anywhere! A bit dependent on the weather!

If you are ever in Auckland I definitely recommend this "Rock the Boat" trip. The "Rock" is a boat offering overnight cruises on the beautiful Bay of Islands in the very north of New Zealand about a 4 hour drive north of Auckland. The captain and his friendly crew will meet you at Paihia wharf at 5pm or 4pm in winter to give you a bit extra sunlight. As you board the boat, all the crew meet you and ask your name etc and make you feel really welcome! ...
...remember some of the crew's names even when they knew mine and they had everybody on the boat's names to remember and I only had a few to remember but it really did make you feel welcome! The people on the boat where a mixture of backpackers, holiday makers, singles, couples and people travelling alone so if you are worried about going on your own don't be as there will be plenty of others around. The boat holds around 50 people, when I did it in ...

Auckland / Northland highlights.

Advantages: big city, islands, picture perfect scenery ...
Disadvantages: Auckland traffic is a killer

Auckland. ========= I visit Auckland a couple of times a year for various reasons and always manage to find a new side to this city on every visit. This sprawling city is the largest in New Zealand and approx 1/3rd of the countries population live there. This makes for an interesting multi-cultural city but it is pretty much undistinguishable from most other major world cities. The thing that does make Auckland special is its setting. The city ...
...of interesting bays and coves. Auckland is known as the City of Sails and after familiarising yourself with this city you will see why. There are hundreds of yachts moored in various harbours all over this city and on a summer weekend the harbour is awash with water craft of every description. TRANSPORT I always have my own transport when visiting but if you turn up at the airport and need to get to the city, there are various shuttles, buses and ...

Auckland City

Advantages: Great place to see views of city
Disadvantages: It is a city and New Zealand is so much more beautiful to go rural

General over view: Auckland was my first destination when I arrived in New Zealand, traveling into the city and seeing the Sky Tower for the first time was really cool, I remember thinking I made it! I am really here!! The City is big but easy to get around using the tram system they have in place. It is a very clean and friendly city, if you don't have long I would recommend a couple of days here. The Sky Tower is the main thing to see and do and ...
...was great to see what Auckland has to offer you, and you can book onto the tour through your hostel. They pick you up from the hostel and first take you to the Sky Tower, here they will ask if anyone wants to do the Sky Tower jump, the first person to put their hand up gets to do it for free so make sure you are quick of the mark. They then drive you up and down the city streets pointing out great places to eat and go in the evening. The next stop ...

...the Tasman Sea to reach Auckland Airport. New Zealand was once apart of the Australian continent but over millions of years the two land masses have drifted apart. In the vicinity to New Zealand are many Pacific island groups Tonga, Samoa & Fiji are few you may have heard of, these islands were formed by volcanic eruptions caused by the shifting of the Earths plates and many hundreds of island groups exist in this part of the world. One of the things ...
...30,000 feet. On arrival to Auckland Airport in the North Island the weather and the heat was noticeably different to other places I have been on Holliday, the heat from the sun was very hot but the air was fresh I found it to be more comfortable than any Mediterranean island I have visited in the past. Due to the low level of Ozone above New Zealand it is advisable to wear high factor sun block and this must be applied several times a day if you ...

a little country with a big heart

Advantages: empty beaches & friendly faces
Disadvantages: having to leave

...the entire population of NZ, Auckland is a reasonable sized city surrounded by a beautiful harbour and home to the America's Cup, and has everything on offer that you will find in most other major cities plus that little bit of extra "kiwi" touch. In the city centre you will find the 'backward bungy' that will catapult you into the air at 220kph (best advised to do this BEFORE consuming an entire tepanyaki dinner), the 'Sky Tower' (the tallest structure ...
...the traffic. But basically Auckland has many things on offer, most of your whims can be catered for.. all you need to do is ask! Auckland is nice but if you want to bear witness to some pure and natural beauty then you need to head north and towards Northland which incorporates every town from the city of Whangarei right to the tip of the country. Here you will find bushland comprising of native trees such as the Pohutukawa and Punga, and an array ...

Thermal Pants And Ear Muffs In August

Advantages: clean, unique, loads to see and do,great people
Disadvantages: a hell of a long way!

Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and is immaculate, clean ,bright and cosmopolitan and small enough to explore on foot. New Zealand is not exactly a weekend break away and "By eck" the journey is long especially if you go the Pacific route ,however, the rewards to be found in Auckland are worth the trauma. I went on a short stopover of six nights and found more than enough to keep me excitable without leaving the city. Hotels,Food and drink ...

The Auckland Antartic centre is a delight and so different to anything you'd find in our neck of the woods. Penguins and things that live where it's extra cold in abundance! The centre includes a museum dedicated to Scott of the Antartic and you can view original diary's,equipment and even the food items they ...

AUCKLAND IS THE PLACE TO BE

Advantages: Great people, nice fresh clean air, not so much traffic and wide open spaces in a big NZ city!
Disadvantages: It's one hell of a long flight!

...it! The climate in Auckland is great, it is knowledge that the further up New Zealand that you get is warmer. Auckland does a sub-tropical climate exactly the opposite to the United Kingdom. That's why you'll find tourists wearing shorts at Heathrow when it's -2, and everyone wearing layers of jumpers as they step off the plane at Auckland airport, (you sure can pick a tourist!) Auckland's Queen Street is the best place for partying, Cactus Jacks ...
...There is a place in Auckland called Avondale, which is where you find the star of Arachnophobia. Believe me, they grow to the size of plate! Then there's the Weta, harmless but it sticks to you, ugh! No poisonous animals in New Zealand folks! The money side of things when you venture out to New Zealand is brilliant for the Brits. You'll be rich! £1.00 = $3.00 approx. However like the British government, they like to put the cost of cigarettes up ...

God defend New Zealand

Advantages: Feels more homely than home
Disadvantages: Really tight on speed limits

...step off the plane at Auckland International Airport is just how much easier the Kiwis take life. New Zealand time doesn't seem to involve hours and minutes but more days. For a nation of 4 million, what they lack in population they make up in passion. On an advert I saw whilst there it was said there were 4 million All Blacks and judging by the atmosphere of all the Lions games I don't think I could possibly agree more. I went to a party at a friends ...
...up the road north of Auckland to Waiwera where there is a thermally heated water park. The complex consists of several swimming pools and many hydroslides, suitable for people of any age provided you can swim. If you're not a swimmer no worries, there are plenty of naturally heated pools to soak in. Auckland City itself is clean and the locals seem happy to give directions should you get lost. The diversity of the country is evident as less than ...

Auckland

Advantages: everything within easy access, friendly people, great atmosphere, plenty to do.
Disadvantages: becoming a victim of its own popularity.

Those who just pass through Auckland on their way to the thrills on offer in the rest of the country don't know what they are missing. Auckland has it all - beautiful beaches, mountain ranges, volcanoes for the nature lovers, and fabulous restaurants and night life for the more outgoing. I meant to spend just a few days there whilst I found my feet but ended staying for four months, then returned again after seeing the rest of the country and spent ...

I really can't do it justice in this review and the best thing I can say is - try it for yourself!! ...

sun, sand and water and the huge shopping centre

Advantages: beautifull place
Disadvantages: the price and time to get there

well if i could be anywhere now it would be new zealand, its a brilliant place the beaches are really lovely you've got a beach with black sand, normal beaches and you've got a great surfing beach. you have got a number of big shopping malls and the wide selection of take away places the food is lovely and the people are as friendly as anything. the town centre is huge as is auckland. you have got great schools, in each school they have built in ...
...which is great for the kids. i went to the arahoe school and it is really nice. i moved there when i was ten but that was 13yrs ago my dad still lives there and even now he still has loads of hobbies. you can do so much to do there:- fly fishing, rugby clubs, football clubs, ice hockey clubs and meny more. if you are just going for a holiday your best to go in the summer for at least 2-3mths even then you are going to seriously pushed to see everything ...

The sub-tropical north

Advantages: beautiful, loads to do and see
Disadvantages: nothing like it in the UK

...of people go just to Auckland and can tend to miss out on Northland. Don't get me wrong, there's loads to do in Auckland and it's the biggest city in NZ and well worth seeing, but you're missing out on a lot further north. About three hours drive north you'll come to Whangarei, the gateway to the north, which is a reasonably big town. The coastal road up is breathtaking during the summer (Dec to Feb ish). About an hour or so further up the coast ...
...in the north island, GO HERE! It's a hotspot during new year in paihia (spelling...). You can go whale watching, dolphin watching, snorkelling, scuba diving or just relax in a very beautiful part of the world. Further up the coast at the very tip of NZ, Cape Reinga (where all the souls leave from NZ according to legend), 90 mile beach....... Further inland in Northland you have the mighty kauri tree forests where you'll find Pahetukawa (the biggest ...

Perfect place for a holiday

Advantages: Big Airport
Disadvantages: None that I have found so far

...The most attractive aspect of Auckland in particular is that marries together the typical laid back New Zealand lifestyle, with the modern conviniences and services of any big city. Auckland city centre itself is new with a lot of attractive arcitechture, and similar to London, just without the sheer mass of people. You'll find whatever you want in the shopping centres of downtown Auckland, but then can drive for 30mins and be in the relatively tranquil ...
