    I need a car for my work, we normally lease one through the company but mine had to go back as I had exceeded the mileage limit (120,000 in 4 years, I did 128,000 in 3) There has been a bit of a delay in organising a permanent replacement so I am currently using hire cars through Avis. This review is based on my experience of the Bournemouth branch in Southcote Road, just off the Holdenhurst road. Avis don't like to take the mileage on their cars much over 13,000, so I get the opportunity to change mine on a regular basis and I am always driving a relatively new car.     At some time in our lives, we find ourselves in the situation of having our car off the road, and needing to hire a car. Some of us maybe want to hire for other reasons. How do you know which hire company to choose? There are so many out there, which claims to be good.     Normally if Shane and I are going to Tenerife we usually hire a group B car, but Shane always moans. ‘It under-powered’, ‘too small' and frankly ‘disappointing’. On our last visit I vowed never to hire such a small car again. (In the UK I drive a Volvo 440 turbo and Shane drives a Volvo 440SE (2 litre if you are not into cars, like me)). As we were taking Kayleigh, my best mate’s daughter with us and also taking her Grandparents out from time to time, on the island, I could justify the expense a bigger car.     I recently hired a car for 4 days from Avis from their Dublin, Ireland, city centre location. I found the Avis website pleasant to navigate and I was not asked for any unreasonable or excessive information. The car selection and availability was good, especially given my short notice and the fact that it's peak season. To Avis's credit they did not charge me any surcharges for renting from a city centre location - people should be alert when hiring a car in Dublin as of some of Avis's big name competitors are charging a 25euro surcharge for hiring anywhere in Dublin city.     Do you want to avoid being overcharged? If the answer to this is “yes”, then read on.... You would think that the price you are quoted for something would be the price you pay, wouldn’t you? Wrong – in the case of car hire from Avis. Let me explain. In September this year we went on holiday to Cape Town in South Africa. We needed to hire a car for 9 days, so I naturally did some research on the internet. I obtained quotes from all the major companies, and Avis came out as one of the cheapest.     Update of October 26th, 2005. I wanted to put this at the top of the review because ciao and the Head of Customer Relations for Avis, U.K. have just made my day. I get very little time to come on Ciao and didn't even know there were 2 guestbooks. I had never looked in the private one. This week there was a message in my guestbook saying to look in the other one. Surprise, I found it. It was a message from the Head of Customer Relations asking if, after a year, I still had the paperwork. I keep everything for 10 years.     This is a review for the Avis London city airport outlet. I hired a car 2 weeks ago picking up the car at 5pm on friday and dropping it off at 4pm on the sunday. The total cost was around £150 which may sound expensive but was actually not that bad considering this included.... Full car hire for 2 days (£50) windscreen protection (£3) Full insurance with excess limited to £100 (£30) A VW Golf 1.9 Diesel A full tank of diesel fuel. (£60) Service.     The other reviews of Avis on Ciao seem to show people have had good experiences with Avis. However I feel I must let people know about the awful experience I have had with Avis in St Lucia. Which leads me on to saying I would also think twice about hiring a car from Avis on any of the other Caribbean islands. Although a few years ago now (1999) myself and 5 friends travelled to St Lucia for a wonderful holiday on this beautiful island.     When a friend of mine decided to get married in Bolton we decided that we would not drive up from the South Coast we would fly up and rent a car. Easy, far less pain in dealing with the M6 on a bank holiday weekend. Well we flew from Southampton and into Manchester where we had booked a car with Avis. The car was prebooked over the internet. The quote was for £64.99 for 3 days. Bargain we thought. When the quote came through we were told that it was an inclusive quote.     In my opinion AVIS are the worst company in the world. After my holiday in Italy in August 2011 I returned the car and they wanted to add extra charges that I did not agree to. Me and my disabled son were then threatened with violence unless I agreed to sign. After I complained in the UK I got a partial refund. Yesterday, (2nd Feb) AVIS in Bracknell took £78 from my account without any warning or prior notification. They said it was for a traffic offence in Italy las August. but they cannot provide me with any details! This has obviously been dreamt up by crooks who work for AVIS as a revenge ... more
