    The ‘backwaters’ is a network of inland waterways in the southern Indian region of Kerala. It’s an extremely beautiful place and one of National Geographic’s Top 50 places to see in the world. Some Geordies (and others) reading this review may consider Sunderland to be something of a ‘backwater’ but with a slightly different definition, and there’s no denying that anyone visiting Sunderland for the purpose of visiting ‘Backwaters’ restaurant would find it ironic that a restaurant that is named after such a beautiful place could be located in such a dump.
