Advantages: Germany's capital and most interesting city Disadvantages: a bit too large, distances too long
...now even used by the Berlin Tourist Board for a campaign to attract visitors.
I've been to four Berlins in my life: when in my mother's womb I was in Berlin, then the capital of the Third Reich, from the GDR (German Democratic Republic), where we later lived, I visited Berlin once in the 1950s, a much smaller city then (only the Soviet sector), but still a capital, the capital of the GDR.
After fleeing to West Germany I visited West Berlin, not ... ...gruesome it was. My fourth Berlin is the capital of the reunited Germany; after the fall of the wall in 1989 I've visited the city several times, there is no other capital in Europe for which you need a new guide every time you go because so much changes, so many buildings are renovated or rebuilt from scratch or are completely new.
Berlin has not one centre but several, this has nothing to do with the partition, it has always been like that, the ...

...is the reason I visited Berlin in the first place, and without this story, I would probably never have gone to Berlin at all, let alone three times.
Berlin 1921
My Father was Born in Berlin, in 1921, “West Berlin that is” where he lived with his Mother, Father, Elder Brother Wilhelm, younger Brother Anton and kid Sister Elizabeth. My Father was captured, and bought to England, a POW camp in Bushy Hertfordshire, this is another story, which I won’t go into now, but he met my Mother in 1945, she was 18 and in the land army, my Father worked the land for a local farmer, who wanted to keep him on after the war, “saying he was a really good worker” My Father got a work permit and stayed ...

...boyfriend and I went to Berlin in April after I bought him a weekend away there for his birthday. We flew from Glasgow to Berlin with Easyjet which cost £150 for return flights for both of us, which I thought was quite cheap. Once we got there, we stayed at Melia Berlin which cost about £300 for both us for 2 nights, which obviously isn't that cheap, but I wanted to make it special. ...we could go to Berlin. Berlin is the Capital City of Germany and is located in the north-eastern part of the country.
We stayed in Berlin for four nights. That may not sound like a long time but we managed to cram an awful lot of exploring into our time there! I will go through which attractions we visited each day to give you an idea of how long it takes to see the main sights.

It was dark though so we didn't really go very far. In the hotel reception area there were cabinets with merchandise for sale. One of these cabinets particularly caught my attention because it was filled with items decorated with green and red men wearing hats. They were from the pedestrian crossings but I wanted to discover ...

...Doughnut". Having recently visited Berlin for the first time since the Wall came down in 1989, I certainly wish I could claim that status myself.
What a capital! The schizophrenia of old divided Berlin has gradually evaporated. I remember West Berlin in the 70s - artificially animated, neon lights and non-stop hyperactivity, a island of consumerism in the midst of Stalinist drabness. Checkpoint Charlie was actually scary - watchtowers, humourless ... ...the dreary uniformity of East Berlin (entirely monochrome in my recollection),no advertisements anywhere, where one struggled to spend the twenty-five marks one was obliged to change into Reichsmark. The underground map displayed in the East had large X's through the ghost stations closed because they were 'dangerously' ...

The Place has a special atmosphere, because every building has a harmony to all the other buildings. For example is the color of all buildings a warm red.

Advantages: friendly people, great nightlife, great history/attractions, great transport system Disadvantages: some may find Kreuzberg intimidating, Kottbusser crime rate is a deterrent

BERLIN FOR TOURISTS
Kreuzberg is world renown for being almost enclosed by the Berlin Wall leading to drug problems and low rental rates in the area. There is a high level of Turkish immigrants as a result of this. There are plenty of kebab houses in the district to back this up. More famous than the first points however is the nightlife, which we have been priveliged to be part of twice. It is also one of the youngest populations ...

Advantages: Multicultural mekka, still rather peaceful, friendly people Disadvantages: far away from Italy ;^p
...March this year, I saw Berlin for the first time. I was not disappointed, I loved it! Sure, there is the Kurfuerstendamm area with Bahnhof Zoo (which has changed a lot from what I remembered having seen in the memorable movie "Christiane F."), where tourists can shop even on a Sunday. I have to say that I liked this place so much, I put it on my ...

I went to Berlin for 8 days in September. We flew in and stayed in a flat in Charlottenburg.
The Bahn's are easy to use and understand, though when we arrived we couldnt find a ticket machine for ages whcih was upsetting with all our bags.
