Birmingham International Airport - 2008

Advantages: Big enough to get the destinations, small enough to care
Disadvantages: Complex road system to get there

...hasn't been a review of Birmingham International Airport for several years, much of the information on Ciao is outdated and well overdue for an update. So pennies or no pennies, here are my thoughts on BHX. When I was a kid, I loved going to airports - any airport, it didn't matter - it was all just so exciting. Strange exotic people, big shiny shops and lots of static electric shocks from the nylon carpets - there was nothing quite like it. But ...
...choice is always Birmingham. Birmingham Airport is situated to the East of Birmingham, close to the point where the M6, M42 and M6 Toll all intersect in a mess of complex roads. I live roughly 45 minutes from Birmingham International Airport, a few minutes more from Luton and maybe an hour from East Midlands. We've also got teensy Coventry Airport in the area though I've not yet found a chance to use that one. So you could say I have plenty of choice. ...

Most easily accessed in England.

Advantages: Central location, very easy access.
Disadvantages: None, apart from being 100 miles away from London.

Birmingham Airport must be the best airport for access anywhere in England. Sitting virtually on the M42 (and hence easy access to the M5 and M40) and very close to the M6 (and hence easy access to the M1), it lies within a mile or so of the central hub of the UK motorway system. As it also has a station on the Birmingham to Euston line within a few hundred yards, it is also super simple to reach by train. Car parking at the airport is extensive, ...
...bays directly outside the arrivals and departure gates. Taxis are always available, and the journey to the City Centre hotels etc can usually be accomplished in less than 15 minutes. The airport itself is compact, and well laid out. The general facilities are excellent, and the information systems are extensive and very reliable. Altogether a thoroughly civilised, well-organised, and user friendly airport! ...

Fly away!

Advantages: Well laid out, pleasant to fly from
Disadvantages: Constantly expanding so there's often building work

...I must say I think Birmingham has one of the best. For a start, its not TOO big and sprawling. Its check-in staff are always fast, efficient and courteous and everything is well signposted. There is a good choice of food (although like all airports, it's not cheap) and it is actually tasty! There's always plenty of trolleys for your luggage (I've been to Corfu airport and not been able to find a single trolley, and others where I've had to pay).Once ...

Convenient

Advantages: local and accessible
Disadvantages: Flight supplements!!!

I have travelled out of BHX a few times now for holidays. It is easily accessible - clearly signposted - and easy to find your way around once you get there. You can get here by train also - but never fancied lugging suitcases myself! I suppose it's quite a small airport in the scheme of things - and that quite suits me. It has all the necessary facilities eg Bureau de Change, choice of Food outlets, somewhere to grab a beer and the compulsory ...
...'BHX Flight Club' - which gives you a card which will entitle you to a discount at some of the shops within the complex. There's also a WH Smiths, Boots and a Spar shop - useful for those last minute items. I have used the Executive Lounge also - very comfortable and well stocked. A nice escape for those who want to be away from the hustle and bustle of the main airport terminal. ...

Birmingham has an excellent airport

Advantages: spacious, plenty to do, nice staff
Disadvantages: lack of taxis

I have recently flown from Birmingham airport on a flight to Jersey. This was the first time I had flown since a child so I was a bit uncertain about what to do when you get there! I had no reason to worry everything was clearly sign posted and the airport staff were very helpful. Once we had been through customs I was pleasantly surprised to see many VAT free shops, cafes and nice comfy seats! The airport was spacious and very comfortable. The ...
...All in all I was very pleased with my flight from Birmingham, our plane left on time and we had a great holiday! The only down side is the limited space for taxis to park! We had to wait for half an hour before getting a taxi home, so that might be one thing that could be improved. ...

BA Terminal

Advantages: amenities, short distance, smoking, refreshments, shopping
Disadvantages: none

If you fly BA to/from BHX then you will board or change planes in the new BA terminal. This is a pleasure to use and a very good reason to fly BA. The dedicated terminal is small but has everything in there that you need: cafe, duty free shop, currency exchange, BA enquiry desk, newsagent etc. There are TV's connected upto sky news and also dedicated executive club lounges with enrty only gained through the BA terminal. Lifts and helping hands are ...
...and pleasant. My favorite aspect is that the smoking area is huge - BA have recognised that smokers do want to smoke, are desperate to smoke when they are changing flights and don't want to have to hunt and walk for miles to find the smoking areas. Well done BA & BHX - you've got everything spot on. ...

Less People, Less Hassle

Advantages: Easy to get to
Disadvantages:

Birmingham Airport is in an ideal location for most people to get to, most people outside of London that is, the approach to the airport is easy, as is the parking. Plenty of ‘park and ride’ places if that’s what you want. The airport itself is easy going, pleasant, not crowded and well laid out. We found the staff there much less stressed than at busier places and consequentially more friendly with more time for the customer. The airport is modern ...

Save Money!

Advantages: Regional departures, efficient, comfortable
Disadvantages: Limited non-stop long haul departures

Birmingham (my local airport) has recently been expanded and has improved its facilities, and although there is still some building work in progress, it is largely confined to external areas. The new airside lounge is now much more welcoming, with more shops, cafes (one overlooking the runway) and a pub. If you plan to fly from Birmingham it is well worth joining their 'BHX Flight Club', which is free (0121 767 5511/bhx.co.uk). They send you a membership ...
...The real advantage of the card is that you get at least 10% off food, drink and some other purchases at many of the airport outlets. Bearing in mind that airport prices normally border on the extortionate, the savings are worth having, particularly for families. My Tips: 1. If you are travelling some distance by car it is worth checking that there is no major event taking place at the adjacent National Exhibition Centre. There is always rush hour ...

So easy

Advantages: Small and friendly
Disadvantages: Night facilities a little sparse

I love using Birmingham airport. It is just off the M42, fust a few miles from the M6 and M1. Parking is easy with several car parks available within walking distance to the main entrance or served with curtosy buses running every few minutes day and night. For passengers not travelling by car, there are plenty of taxix available and there is even a free bus which runs every five minutes and takes passengers to Birmingham International Train Station. ...
...and the atmosphere is pleasant. Security is not ignored, but the staff are friendly and helpful. Compared to bigger airports, Birmingham offer so much more to its passengers. For a no hassle start and finish of your journey, if you live in the Midlands, choose Birmingham airport. ...

Birmingham Intl Airport

Advantages: Convenient, Pleasant, easy to access...
Disadvantages: Construction/expansion which can cause minor delays...

Birmingham International Airport (BHX/EGBB) is my home airport and I have no complaints with it whatsoever. It is very easily accesible and the staff that work there are always very polite and helpful. Imigration is very easy although British citizens are sent another que and Non-British citizens are sent to another, in a bid to speed up the process and keep the aircraft moving. There is expansion going on currently but that is for the best as BHX ...
...and make it easier for passengers around the area. There are currently 2 terminals, both are very efficent. Major airlines that serve BHX are Air France, KLM, Emirates, Lufthansa, Continental, etc - but it would be great to have more airlines serving BHX. Transport links are very good with trains, buses serving very near to the airport. Overall this airport is very good and not one of those that should come in your list of "bad airports", if it does, ...

Birmingham International Airport

Advantages: easy, good location, esaily accessiable
Disadvantages: parking fees, no B757's

I have flown from Birmingham many times and have connected here also. The first time i flew into Birmingham was from a flight abck from Australia that wqas diverted from Singapore (connection) to Birmingham where were then flown to Heathrow. The airport is nice and spacious although i think they should have more information decks dotted around the terminal. Also, i am aware at one point, Birmingham was home to several major airlines including Quantas, ...
...lot of potential to Manchester Airport who offer more INternational Flights. Birmingham would be a better airport if they had more direct flights to more INternational destinations. I am happy with Dubai, but what about AMritsar, Honk Kong and places like these which are only accessiable from a connection. ...
