3 Stars Bliss at Blists Hill? Review with images 20/09/2011

Advantages Advantages A working Victorian village with a fair amount to see and do; child friendly.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lacking in information; some displays closed at peak times.

For a long time, I’ve enjoyed visiting museums based upon the not-so-distant past; attractions such as Yesterday’s World in Great Yarmouth and the Black Country Museum in Dudley have always fascinated me for their examination of Victorian England. Although my last visited to Dudley over two years ago was somewhat of a disappointment, I was still eager to visit Blists Hill, a similar tourist attraction situated close to Ironbridge in Shropshire. Apparently, I’ve been to the Victorian Town before but I can’t remember the occasion so this review will definitely be focused upon Blists Hill as it ... more

Advantages Advantages A fantastic family day out

Disadvantages Disadvantages I think you need a good weather day to visit

BLISTS HILL A VICTORIAN TOWN After we had to cancel our main two week holiday, we decided to visit our local tourist attractions. We are lucky enough to live in a small village just outside Ironbridge which is a large tourist attraction and hosts at least 10 museums. Blists Hill A Victorian Town being the biggest of all of them. I have personally lived here for over 20 years and I have only once visited here previously and that was a long time ago, it has been improved greatly since that first visit. My husband has never visited it before now, isn’t it amazing how you something wonderful on ... more

Advantages Advantages A very nice day out. Inexpensive, educational and fun.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can get very crowded in Summer.

It's funny isn't it? You travel the country, possibly even the world, searching for new things to see & do and new places to visit but you often tend to neglect what's on your own doorstep, right? Take me for example, I live in Telford, have done all my life. Now Telford isn't exactly what you'd call a 'tourism mecca', you wouldn't come here for your Summer holidays anyway, but cutting a swathe through what would otherwise be a fairly run-of-the-mill new-town is the Ironbridge Gorge and it's down here - away from all the housing estates, the shopping centres and the business parks - that ... more

Advantages Advantages Good day out for all ages

Disadvantages Disadvantages Pricey on its own, lot of it weather dependant

I remember visiting here on a school trip about 25 years ago (eek!) and really enjoying it, so on a recent short break in the area we decided to see if it had changed much. Blists Hill is an open-air 'living' Victorian museum and all the staff are dressed appropriately for the era. It is signposted from the Shropshire town of Ironbridge and there is parking on site. There is a fee for parking, I don't recall the amount but I think it was quite reasonable as your ticket is valid all day in any of the other Ironbridge museum car parks except the Museum of the Gorge (details are at the ticket ... more

Advantages Advantages The staff are amazing and completely in character

Disadvantages Disadvantages I don't live closer

Blist Hill Victorian Villiage The sign of a good museum is when you want to return again and again. My first visit to Blist Hill was with my family when we were heading somewhere else and realised we hadn’t left enough time, so we came here on a whim, since then we’ve returned several times. What is it? Blist Hill is a fantastic museum, especially for youngsters, that is part of the Ironbridge gorge museums. Which also includes Coalport China, a tile museum and Enginuity – a science based museum. You can buy tickets for the individual attractions but it is far cheaper to buy an annual pass for ... more

Advantages Advantages A good day out

Disadvantages Disadvantages Far too nice in some aspects

The Blists Hill Victorian town near Ironbridge, Shropshire, has a problem. It says it wants to teach children about life in a Victorian town, but odes it reall want ot do this? There are buildings and there are workshops, a pub and so forth. But does Blists Hill Victorian Town tell the real story of what it would have been like to live in a small Victorian town? I do not think it does. It fails because it totally ignores the very real danger of having to go to the Victorian workhouse due to disease, infirmity, poverty, old age or the like. Far form being an age in which the older were ... more
