Brackenrigg Inn
A lunch experience of quite unspeakable awfulness. The pub was hardly busy and there seemed to be plenty of staff around - but as customers we were at times invisible. A food order took 40 minutes to appear. We ordered Fish pie and its appearance when plonked on our table was of two large white brown cow pats on cereal bowls. It was served with a large hunk of stalish white bread and an apology for a salad. Hacking ones way through ... ...to be fair, some decent pieces of fish beneath. But the presentation and the general culinary standard was woeful - and this for dishes that were priced at an astonishing £11.95 each! On our experience this is an overpriced rip-off of a pub with diabolical service, unfriendly staff and a complete lack of regard for its customers. Avoid! ...

Advantages: super place, super views Disadvantages: no view at all if the mist descends
Go to the Brackenrigg Inn (Ullswater, Penrith, Cumbria, CA11 0LP) - a great place for a short break.
Ullswater is fairly central in the Lake District. Penrith, a market town, is nearby. Very local attractractions include, of course, Lake Ullswater (with its yachts and pleasure boats), Aira Force (a spectacular waterfall), National Trust properties, and of course, ..... the rest of the lake district.
Two of you can stay (en-suite), very comfortable ... ...board. Good in-room stuff (filter coffee, etc). Rooms have TVs. Beds are comfy.
The tariff includes a comprehensive breakfast menu (full english, through smoked salmon and eggs, to porage). Evening meal menus are incredible - three courses of excellent food (with vast choices, starters ranging from soup to mussels to pate to vegetarian feta salad; main courses - seafood, duck, lamb, pork, steaks - all with the most scrumptious sauces; desserts - ...
