BGI is a nice airport these days

Advantages: Al-Fresco Check-In
Disadvantages: Lack of eating/drinking facilities after security

I visited Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) back in March 2007. We were staying in Barbados before flying out to Trinidad to watch some World Cup cricket. We arrived at BGI from London Gatwick with Virgin Atlantic. I had last been to BGI in May 2006 prior to this trip. It hadn't changed much, but what had got better was the duty free shopping. I'll go into this a bit later. Like many carribean airports, when you arrive there is no jetty/airbridge, ...
...is fine as long as the weather is nice and sunny (which it fortunately was on my 2 visits there) However, I'm not sure if they have alternate 'airstairs' with a canopy over them for more inclement weather situations. After climbing down the stairs you are ushered into the arrivals hall. Fortunately, despite only having a few immigration desks, the queue doesn't take all that long. Even with a fully loaded Boeing 747 coming in. After completing the ...

A Concrete Lovers Paradise

Advantages: Very easy to check in, few delays, nice staff
Disadvantages: Looks like a car park!

Barbados airport. Certainly not a lovely introduction to a beautiful island. OK, so it's not terrible, and there are some very enjoyable parts of the airport, but it looks a bit like a multi-storey car park. The kind of thing you'd find in Central Manchester that was built in the 1970s Getting there... British Airwaws, BWIA(British West Indian Airways), Liat(Caribbean Domestic), and many other small airlines fly to Bridgetown Airport, as it is ...
...are cramped turboprops but Liat and Caribbean Star do have some comfy Bombardier ones. Like most Caribbean islands, it is too small to support a long runway. So, you have to close your eyes during takeoff and prey that you won't hit the five-metre fence at the end of the runway which juts out to sea. Once, I was flying Liat and the plane flew only a metre over the fence. On Arrival... As you arrive, the first thing you notice, apart from the amazing ...

Watch out for the eager porters.

Advantages: Good taxi service to it
Disadvantages: Duty Free not great

The Grantley Adams International Airport is about half an hour by taxi from Bridgetown and is in the Southeast of the Island. Taxis services are plentiful and get you there and to your destination although if you are a nervous passenger then you won't enjoy the ride. The duty free is adequate, for cigarettes and rum, but for a lot of other things like wine and champagne it is not worth bothering. There are quite a few shops and bars and newsstands. ...

Barbados for a holiday? ok but not at Blue Horizon

Advantages: Appears very safe and very interesting, Beautiful & a time warp.
Disadvantages: Not a huge range of things to buy unless you want jewellery.

We returned 9th September 2005 after a week in paradise but surrounded by tatty accomodation in Christchurch. The Virgin brochure described the hotel as colourful which I suppose should have been a clue. Down as a 3* in the brochure and pricewise identical to Silver Sands for that week, in fact for £1 more Silver Sands were giving away an extra week! Paid extra for a superior suite which was not available but "upgraded" to a One bedroom suite, ...
...budget chalet. I do have pictures if you request them. Beaches fantastic especially at Rockley with white sand and safe bathing and it's own lifeguard station. Blue Horizon should be avoided unless the price / budget only allows you to go for this class of hotel. Food at the "Gap" (St. Lawrence) excellent with so much to choose from in style and price. In one week we did not have a bad meal. Recommend Sweet Potato at the gap. Driving on the ...

Barbados - Paradise Island...Yea Mon!

Advantages: Weather
Disadvantages: Airport Looks Like Back Yard

I had the most amazing time in Barbados (November 2005.) After an awful flight which lasted almost 13 hours due to bad weather conditions we landed in Barbados (this was after we landed in St.Lucia because we couldn't land in Barbados due to a "tropical storm") When we landed the weather was dull...it was raining and I thought we had landed in the middle of no-where. I looked around and all there was, was something that seemed to be a shed, it was ...
...were miserable. I didnt know what I had let myself in for but my holiday soon picked up. My hotel was absolutely stunning. Situated right on the beach front, it was heaven. (I stayed at "Blue Orchids") The weather soon picked up as well and temperatures were soaring. I came home with a golden tan after lying on the beach and around the pool. Theres lots to do in Barbados, from snorkling to going on a Submarine, shopping in Bridgetown and going on ...
