Advantages: Good location for Docklands and City Airport Disadvantages: Overpriced, low standards, bad service
...I eventually settled on the Britannia International, a four star hotel in Canary Wharf. I figured that I'd get more for my buck being a little further out from the centre of London, and being in the heart of a business district I thought I'd get a great weekend deal. It was close to London City airport and was surrounded by great restaurants. I booked through Opodo, although the hotel was listed on all the usual hotel search engines, as well as having ... ...As it turns out, Britannia is actually a chain of 3 and 4 star hotels across the UK, which I hadn't realised at the time of booking. The hotel offers 2 classes of room below the room I reserved - on Opodo the prices were £10 and £20 less than for the jacuzzi room. Every person that checked in whilst I was checking in (of which there were a large number!) had paid different amounts, ranging from £70 up to £170 per night from what I managed to hear. ...

I've staid at the Britannia for more than 50 nights over the past few years. The one thing I learned from this is that, actually, the other reviewers of this hotel were not having bad luck. The hotel is spectacularly tacky (think what would happen if you give a big interior design budget to East Enders' Peggy Mitchell) and service is consistently worse than any similarly-priced London hotel. The rooms themselves are quite OK, if you don't mind the ... ...what makes this hotel truly unique is not the interior design but the blend of 'don't care/whatever' attitude of staff and the fact that their booking system is based on chaos theory. It is very common to spend 10-15 minutes (which is long, in real time) waiting to check in. You have a 15% chance of your booking not being found (which is a big risk, in real life) and a near-100% chance of seeing some other guests being driven to desperation because ...

Advantages: Good location Disadvantages: Poor standard
My husband and I planned a weekend away to London a few weeks back. Normally we'd stay either in Piccadily or Leicester Square but this time we thought we'd venture out a bit and try somewhere different. The Canary Wharf seemed a good choice as there were also a good selection of shops and restaurants there.
We waited in the queue for 40mins before anyone could attend to us. By this time we were pretty fed up as we just wanted to relax and chill ... ...we have one? The room that we had booked (jacuzzi room) was not available but instead we could have a twin room. A twin room for a couple who've gone away on a romantic weekend together!! So, instead of upgrading us for their mistake they were downgrading us to a smaller room. Of course we kicked up a fuss! In the end they found us a double room on the 12th floor (after previously telling us there were no double rooms left!) and gave us free breakfast ...
