Advantages: Use of Lounge, free Airmiles, Upgrade vouchers Disadvantages: You can lose your membership quickly, if you stop flying for any time
Well, there has been not too many complementary experiences about the BA Miles scheme, which was born this time last year, from the old Airmiles scheme. I have to say, I have been pretty pleased with my lot from BA, particularly, as I have done most of my flights for business and didn't have to pay to earn my miles anyway. Can't grumble at that, eh?
I had been a memeber of BA Executive Club, collecting Air Miles for about five years or so, when ... ...Yes, it was more expensive, to use them for domestic and short haul flights (13000 BAmiles now required), but BA compensated for that, by transferring miles collected under the old scheme, to the new scheme at a rate of 14 BA Miles for one old air mile. That gave me about 240000 BA Miles. Now I had travelled a fair bit in the UK in that time, for about one year, and then went to Australia, where I was travelling most weeks, with Qantas. I was able ...

Advantages: On-line check-in, easy to use, you can choose your seat Disadvantages: None for me yet
I’ve discovered British Airways Executive Club one and a half years ago.
Until then, I’ve been flying with different airline companies, as Air France or Tarom (this is the Romanian company and I used it a lot, as I was born in Romania).
So, I’ve been flying from Bucharest to London and back for 10 times in the last 18 months. For the first 4 times, I used Tarom, as I thought it is the cheapest (these were personal flights, not business flights, ... ...the idea that British Airways was quite expensive (actually, it used to be, but they cut the prices recently, to keep up with the low-fares airlines). But one day I need to go from UK to Amsterdam for business and my company has a deal with BA. So I was going to Amsterdam with them. I was quite impressed by the service quality, the politeness of the crew, even the food was much better than any other airlines I’ve been flying with. I’ve been given ...

Advantages: Fair deal, easy to accumulate, straightforward Disadvantages: Not available on all flights
“The British Airways Executive Club isn't just another frequent flyer programme. It's been designed to recognise and reward business travellers with exclusive benefits every time they fly.” This was the advertisement which I saw whilst making my first business trip in 1994, travelling to Dulles Airport, Va., and not knowing what it was all about. I had boarded the BA 747 aircraft at LHR (London Heathrow Airport), and was travelling to the USA for ... ...but whenever possible I chose British Airways: the service is better, the cabin staff are much more attentive and sincere, and they love to use the “yes” word more regularly than those of the other airlines.
I have to admit to being a little perplexed when the BA points system was introduced a few years ago now, but by enrolling within the deadline and transferring all my “old” airmiles to the new “BA Points” the relationship has only improved. ...

Advantages: Flown several times free, or up-graded. Disadvantages: Dates are difficult to come by.
...went back to England, on British Airways, I decided to sign up for their frequent flyer miles. I figured I would be visiting family at least once a year, so I might as well reap the benefits.
Both Len and I have the Blue Executive card. That is the bottom of the range, and I feel after 15 trips with them, that it is all that we will achieve. I assume business flyers obtain the Silver and Gold status. Basically it is the fare class that gives you ... ...and I use is the British Airways Visa card. This way, when we fly to England, we get the 4,416 miles each way, plus milage for paying with our card. This really helps them pile up. Not only do we use this card for trips, but anything we use a credit card for. They also have promotion around Christmas, giving extra miles for spending more. Now, who could resist that.

Advantages: Accumulate lots of miles Disadvantages: Don't get a household account and try and spend them
BA Miles Household account is the biggest pain out.
I thought it would be a good idea to merge my BA miles with my husbands so we signed up for the Household account.
All was fine until I went to book tickets and then found out we can only get tickets for myself and my husband as the 2 members of the account. I didn't add the kids as they don't hold BA executive cards and there didn't seem any point in them having one either.
But apparently I ... ...this in the Rules and Regulations but those are as clear as mud. Even after having read them about 6 times it wasn't any better.
As this clearly isn't going to get me any tickets booked - I phoned to either get the kids added or to get rid of the Household account to be told we couldn't do it for 6 months as: "16.1.7 Once a Household Account is established, new member(s) may not be added or existing member(s) removed more than once every six months. ...

Advantages: Points make prizes! (Well, flights actually) Disadvantages: Economy flights don't give as many points as you'd hope
I joined the BA Exec club when my company relocated to Scotland - so I was flying up and down every week. (They don't called it the "red eye" for nothing.....) As the company were paying and it was Business class, the points really built up. I had plenty of free flights over the next couple of years. Two free flights to Israel and lots of personal trips London to Edinburgh, plus a few to Dublin.
I soon became a "Silver" member, which gives you access ... ...when you are not travelling business class.
Now my job has changed and I don't fly so much, so straight back down to the "Blue" tier. This means that you can't get access to the club lounge facilities unless you are travelling business class. It made me realise how good I had had it before!
The Blue tier only allows you to collect points.
But I must say that the BA Exec Club website is excellent! It has everything you need - all your exec points ...

Brilliant. Stay loyal and you will be rewarded! I have flown with BA about 10 times usually the London to Johannesburg route and mostly flying in Premier economy which is roughly £1000 a time. I also use the BA AMEX card that helps me collect miles. I have just reached the critical 100,000 air miles that has enabled me to book a return business class flight from London to Joburg, which would have cost me £3500. Ok so I had to pay the tax, which was ... ...been given roughly a 30% return on my investment, which is not bad, by anybody’s standard. I did notice though on a slightly negative point if you fly in economy you do not receive hardly any miles. I have always found BA’s service to be top notch from start to finish even when we were trying to leave London during the freezing fog. Staff are always friendly and the cabin crew are especially nice. I have flown with most other operators and have decided ...

Okay so I am particularly sad - accrued over 1,000,000 BA miles in only 2.0 years, got my Gold card in just 5 months! I also have flight attendant girlfirend so I guess you could say I have some experince(!) with comercial airline travel. So BA does offer a lot to the BUSINESS traveller including being top of the list for upgrades if you have the Gold (Emmerald Card in "oneworld" speak). Sure you get to go into First lounges etc but the real difference ... ...travel with oneworld airlines and you have access to dedicated booking lines, prefferencial waitlisting etc which really does make a difference if you have to be somewhere for an important business meeting. I should say though that Qantas will spend more time "rubbing you up the right way" than BA will if they can see Emmerald next to your name on the passenger list. I have been offered papers amd Club Class wines etc with Qantas when bookings were ...

Advantages: Only for corporate fat cats in 1st Disadvantages: No air miles, only airplane tickets, increased travel needed for short haul
BA have just announced changes to their executive club reward scheme. Alledgedly a fairer system it gives miles according to distance flown rather than the quantised system that existed before, which was heanily weighted in favour of UK-USA flights. Unfortunately the new system replaces the existing air miles one (which continues in parallel)and can only be used to redeem for flights. It also ends up 'costing' more for those short hauls flights to ... ...rule means no more free trips to Legoland or Thorpe park which the kids enjoyed so much. Advantages: lounge access for Silver & Gold Disadvantages: took a lot to get out of Blue
This whole fiasco of abandoning Air Miles in favour of BA miles is a joke. What I'm currently whinging about is the fact that it doesn't seem to matter how far I fly, I can't seem to get my membership upgraded to Silver status. According to the web site I actually have enough *miles* to get to Australia! I don't actually believe that ('cos I do quite a lot of flying to the states - although I'm not sure that ) but I still don't have enough *points* ... ...this evening because I tried to get into the business lounge at Munich this evening and got turned away because I'm only Blue status, even though I was travelling business class.
***update 28 Feb 2001***

And yes, the trip to Oz could be on the cards... ...

Advantages: miles dont expire Disadvantages: cards expire and its difficult to step up to silver and gold
I found B.A. executive club one of the better frequeny flyer programmes in some ways. At least your miles accrued do not expire if unused like some other programmes. They do seem to move the goalposts around nowadays, but that is only to be expected. Especially this new points scheme. I have used the airmiles to allow my wife to join me in some parts of Europe when I have been working. The one thing that does irritate me though is nearly every tme ... ...always, "Sorry we only have Club seats available". First, I find Club is highly overrated on short haul flights, but thats another story. The point I want to make is nearly every time my wife has flown on the scheme, the economy seats have always had plenty of space, when she looked. So when anyone books their flights this way - do not be fobbed off with the "Club only" one as it sucks the airmiles out of your account much quicker. That is my only ...

Advantages: Virtually none, unless you travel business class Disadvantages: Paltry rewards, difficult to redeem miles for upgrades
Perhaps it's different in the UK, but my experience with BA Executive Club in South Africa has been poor. I fly between Cape Town and Johannesburg on business every second week (economy class, unfortunately) and earn a paltry 198 miles per leg with no tier points. For someone with a family, air miles are one of the few perks of tiresome frequent travel, so I have decided to switch to South African Airways, which provides a better deal.
Another complaint ... ...tried to upgrade a trip to the US last year and was told four months in advance that in order to upgrade one leg I had to upgrade all. As one leg of four had no available "upgrade" seats I could not use my miles at all. The bureaucracy and red tape seems designed to frustrate. ...

Hi all, The latest news and gossip on how to make the most of your B.A miles now in. If you have a family of at most 3 others you can batch their points together to get your reward. Advantages: Good lounge at Heathrow Disadvantages: No real benefits for Economy class passengers
The BA system gives you two sorts of points for each flight - "miles" which can be coverted into free flights and "tier" points which are used to move you up to a higher level. The levels start at Blue then go through Silver to Gold. Each year you have to get enough tier points to maintain your level or you drop back one level. The Blue level has no advantages other than you can save up points for free flights, while the Silver and Gold levels allow, ... ...The number of miles for a flight that you get depends on the distance flown AND the class that you fly in. The last is crucial because if you fly in the "wrong" class then you only gain a fraction of the miles that you expect. For example, if you fly London to Stockholn in Economy, a distance of 890 miles, you only get 223 miles added to you account - at that rate it will take 90 paid for flights to accumalate the 20,000 miles need to get a free ...

Having flown regularly for work in recent years I have been lucky enough to fly many ailines or in some cases UNLUCKY.
My resounding conclusion is that BA are the best and offer by far the best frequent flyer program. Why? Firstly service is always consistant, and they look after you if you are an Exec member, especialy when you get to Silver and above.
