Advantages Advantages You should arrive alive

Disadvantages Disadvantages Quiberon is sooo rubbish

With my grandparents now living there after their retirements, I'm lucky enough to be able to scrounge a free holiday in France just about every year. Brittany Ferries, is from what I've seen, the most popular of the ferry companies which make the trip to the French shores. Their name can be kind of misleading because they actually do not just travel to ports in Brittany, but also they cover just about all of the Channel side of the French coast. Roscoff and St Malo are actually the only ports they use in Brittany. Outside of Brittany, there's Cherbourg, Caen, and sometimes they don't even go ... more

    Advantages Advantages Relaxing 24 hours

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Quite expensive

This is the fourth time I use the Plymouth to Santander crossing. I travel to the south of Spain and it saves having to drive the whole lenght of France. The ferry takes 24 hours and I always look forward to that day as an opportunity to relax. I usually have to travel during the peak period and I know that the ferry, the Val de Loire, is going to be very full and busy. Nevertheless, I am always happily surprised to find that, even with so many people on board, it is still possible to relax and enjoy oneself. However, I strongly feel that it is ensential to have booked a cabin. The cabin ... more

Advantages Advantages Modern, Clean and Friendly

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not the cheapest crossings

Ship: Bretange Route: Portsmouth to St Malo (France) Date: Numerous ---------------------------------------------------------------- Before the ship: There are several ways of getting to the Ferryport at Portsmouth. First of all is drive and leave your car at the secure multi-story car park (about £8 per day) or by train. Taxis from the startion to the ferryport are about £4, or it is a 20minute walk. Facilities at the port are functional. There is a bar, shop, and cafe. Prices are reasonable and the area is clean. Foot Passenger Check-in and boarding: Check-in is very straight forward, and ... more

Advantages Advantages saves lots of driving in France

Disadvantages Disadvantages poor on board facilities

We travelled on the pride of the fleet ' Val de Loire ' from Plymouth to Santander in September 1998, took the car on board and had an outside cabin booked.. Brittany ferries took two lots of money out of my bank account and by way of compensation they gave my £60 in dining room vouchers for the outward and return journeys ( £15 each per sitting) which was welcome althouhg it did not compensate us fully for the damage they had caused and sadly we left it too long to really take it any further.. The Cabins we felt were very small for a 24 hour crossing but adequate for a cross channel ferry ( 4 ... more

Advantages Advantages Its a good beginning to a holiday

Disadvantages Disadvantages Rip off pricing from site to site.

As you may know, I live in Brittany and before Ryanair came on the scene, the only way for us to go backwards and forwards to England for family affairs etc. was Brittany Ferries. Recently, however, I have had many friends ask me to make their reservations for them on the net because I can save them between one hundred pounds and one hundred and fifty pounds per trip, simply by surfing. The pricing structure of Brittany Ferries is strange, and I do not understand why it varies from site to site, but they have two major sites, a french one of course, and an English one, both easily ... more

Advantages Advantages It is an extremely profitable company

Disadvantages Disadvantages Opportunistic rip-off merchants without competition in the SW to bring them back to reality.

Moving to Brittany I had used BF since their first boat - the Pen Ar Bed and in those early days their service was basic but of high standard. As the years progressed the emphasis went from transporting Breton produce to holiday and French property owner passengers and the boats got bigger and the fares went upwards, ever upwards. Then the fare structure was geared to 'airline practise' - BF no longer published the fare bandings or costs. We had to trust the 'guaranteed best value' word of the company, while at the same time paying to telephone them. It became increasingly obvious to me that ... more

Advantages Advantages Reaches the destination on time

Disadvantages Disadvantages Very uncomfortable journey if travelling with toddlers and luggage

We have travelled from Plymouth to Santander with Brittany Ferries on several occasions. The service has always been punctual and the staff on board helpful. The cabins are quite unconfortable and very, very small. They are probably okay for passengers with no luggage. But if you have to carry luggage into your cabin you will struggle to move. If you have to use a cot you will have no floor space. With regards to children Brittany Ferries provide cots for children up to 12months of age. After that, and until they are old enough to sleep in a bed without falling off the edge, they have to ... more

    Advantages Advantages Direct, saves driving

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Everything else

Having read the other reviews I can only conclude they were written by Brittany Ferries staff members. I regularly use the Portsmouth/St Marlo ferry and every time I find their service terrible, frustrating and annoying. Why do I continue to use them, simply, and unfortunately their is no alternative. So what's wrong :- Expensive : My last crossing Dec 2007 ( two people a van and two dogs) cost £436 . This was the cheapest option , no cabin on the night crossing out, just a "comfortable" ( see below) reclining seat (£5 each) and the dogs stayed in the van (but were still charged £100). Unlike ... more

Advantages Advantages By booking at specific times you can get a free cabin

Disadvantages Disadvantages you may have to book quite early in the year

My wife and I use Brittany Ferries sometimes twice a year so here are a few tips to help the experience work for you. We travel from Plymouth to Roscof mostly we have done the Plymouth to Santander, you can save quite a lot of money by following a few prudent steps, if you are prepared to travel at certain times eg, leaving Plymouth later in the afternoon and on return traveling back from France or Spain in the morning you can get a free cabin, also if you book at least four nights accomadation through Brittany Ferries they will give you a discounted price on the ferry which can give you quite ... more

Advantages Advantages Good connections to the continent.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Rain stops play.

Brittany Ferries have crossings between the south coast of England, northern France and northern Spain. Crossings go from Portsmouth to France, and from Plymouth to France and Spain. There are regular crossings in the summer owing to the amount of holidaymakers who now all travel abroad, and a less frequent timetable during the winter months. Frace takes around 6 - 8 hours to do, and Spain about 18 - 24. These times are dependant on the weather, and also to some extent the soze of the boat. You have the option to go either as a foot passenger, or to take your car (lorries coaches and other ... more
