Advantages Advantages Cheap, interesting and great food.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not great for veggies and careful of opportunist theives

WHERE WE STAYED We stayed in the Emperador Hotel on Ave Libertador which was within walking distance of quite a few sights of Buenos Aires such as May Square, the Harbour area and the pedestrian shopping streets such as Florida St. PLAZA DE MAYO On our first day we had an official city tour which began in May Square ( Plaza de Mayo) which was named to commemorate Argentina's independence from Spain which began in May 1810 .We took the obligatory photo of the famous (Casa Rosada) Presidential Palace from where Evita stood on the balcony to talk to the people. We saw the white scarves painted ... more

Advantages Advantages Classy, cultural and (at the moment) cheap.

Disadvantages Disadvantages The current economic situation continues to plague the nations spirit.

Argentina's capital conjures up romantic notions borne out of its reputation as the 'Paris of the South'. Sultry evenings spent in a grand ballroom filled with the impeccably dressed engaged in intricate tango moves while champagne flows Amazon like. The echoes of Evita's vocals drift over the city's loud speakers as you make your way home at sunrise at the beginning of another perfect day. With the Peso's current troubles there has never been a cheaper time to visit Argentina. Up to early 2002 Argentina was scarcely on the backpackers map and while media coverage of the countries troubles is ... more

Advantages Advantages The best meat in the world!

Disadvantages Disadvantages You may need a laxative after all that red meat!

Restaurants in Buenos Aires. If you go to Argentina, you know that the word vegetarian is unknown in there. so lets face it, you must try meat, so taste, so mmmmm... so here are a few tips, if you are near Recoleta visiting Evita's (Eva Peron) grave you can walk along Junin Street where you can find a finest option of food, so instead of choosing the sports cafe, or the Henry j. beans ( yes! Argentina got them too!) You can give it a try in Cabaña Las Lilas restaurant. It is posh and not for a low budget (17 pounds per persons not wine incl.)However, you have to treat yourself in a place like ... more

Advantages Advantages The People, Atmosphere, Gateway to South America, Partying

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Distance, Expense

The flight to Buenos Aires, into Ezeiza Airport, is a long one from the UK, however due to the +3 to +4 hour time difference the timing of most of the major airlines is very convenient. For example British Airways leaves at around 10pm and lands in Buenos Aires at 7am the next day five days a week. There are numerous taxis available outside the airport, with the journey into the centre of BA taking around 40 minutes and costing around $30. To many Argentines, their capital city is synonymous with the country itself, and indeed 40% of the population live in the city's massive, sprawling suburbs ... more

Advantages Advantages Lively city, Good restaurants and bars, plenty to see

Disadvantages Disadvantages Hold onto your hats when taking a cab!

If travelling within South America or if you need to visit Argentina, then a stop in Buenos Aires should definitely be on your itinerary. This vibrant city has the look and feel of a Spanish city though retains its sense of South American location. Culturally and socially, the city embraces all walks of life. From the hard-headed business district and its Hotels such as the obligatory Inter Continental with (frequently Texan oil tycoons) to the bustle of the Boca, Buenos Aires caters for all. The architecture of the Recoleta area as one would expect from this opulent area is fantastic. The ... more

Advantages Advantages All the meat you can eat

Disadvantages Disadvantages Cloting and electrical goods on the expensive side

Buenos Aires is a shoppers paradise, there are streets and streets full of shops with little of the repetitive chain store influences we are so used to at home. There's even a Harrods department store, even if it's not quite the same thing. Womens clothing seems to be the major theme, which whilst expensive is unlikely to find you in the same dress as the bosses wife at dinner. The Argentinians like to eat late, go to a restaurant for dinner at 8 and you'll have the place to yourself. By the time you're settling the bill at 10 the place will be starting to fill up and sitting down for a big ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cheap, cheap, cheap

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Dirty and chaotic

I had high expectations of B.A. and I was a little disappointed. It is a very cheap place to stay (as is all of Argentina for the time being), but unfortunately it is cheap, dirty and chaotic rather than cheap and charming. There are many very good reasons to come to B.A. though, not least because Argentina itself is well worth a visit. Fly into B.A. and you get a good-value introduction to the country, and a good base to go forth and explore. The food here is a dream if you like meat - the beef steaks cooked on parillas are world-class, and will definitely not break the bank. Where else in ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Taxi rides and can be dirty in some places

We spent 6 days in the city in September 2006. Our daughter had been there for 3 months, so it was a help having someone to speak Spanish. It is essential to learn some basic Spanish before you get to South America. She was staying in the San Telmo area which is a very lively, fun-filled, place. Lots of great places to eat and drink and a fabulous market on Sundays. The streets are filled with stalls and plenty of Tango dancing. Make sure you have a secure bag while wandering through the streets. Yes, there are places in the city where the pavements are uneven and there is dog mess everywhere ... more

    Advantages Advantages Art gallery, steak

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive

The main thing about Buenos Aires is that it is very expensive compared to the rest of South America - one dollar here equals one US dollar. We found it difficult to find somewhere cheap to stay. There are a few things worth doing and seeing - eating steak is one of them. However we were disappointed with the standard of the steaks we had - Chile was much better. We hunted round the cemetery for Evita's grave, and went to the new modern art gallery, which is great. We wandered through the rich district and had afternoon tea in a cafe where the rich and political allegedly hang out. We ... more
