A city of extremes

Advantages: a mind blowing experience
Disadvantages: boisterous, polluted and often hard work

...qualities of a city like Cairo within the confines of a short review? Well the answer is I can't, not to the degree that I would like, but if this brief snap shot gives you some idea of the glorious diversity of this wonderful city then that is a worthy enough goal. It is a city that sits with one foot in the modern cosmopolitan world and the other in a timeless past and the two seem to co-exist and merge in a truly remarkable way. It is heaving ...
...percentage of the countries population. Cairo is the largest population centre in the Middle East, as well as the largest in the whole of Africa, Egypt being a country that overlaps two cultural and geographical zones. It is the administrative centre of the country and along with Alexandria is the cornerstone of the economy, which is based around textiles, food and tobacco products, chemicals, plastics, metals, and automobiles as well as tourism. ...

Cairo - life after death

Advantages: the atmosphere and strangeness of the place
Disadvantages: don't go if you dislike heat, pollution and stench!

...the Luxor Hilton, travelling to Cairo on the overnight train which cost around £20 return per person at that time. The "sleeper" compartments of the train really just meant large reclining chairs and curtained windows! I remember it being comfortable enough though - one advantage being that you wake at around 8am having slept for most of the journey, and so feel somewhat refreshed - which is lucky because Cairo hits you right between the eyes! ...
...Giza Plateau, I visited the Cairo Museum and stood, dumbstruck before towering statues - humbled by a lost civilisation who's faith created the basis for human-kinds ever increasing curiosity of life after death. Tutankhamun's treasures lie in the museum, goggled over by thousands and people each year. I stood back from the crowds gathered around the most famous icon of them all -Tutankhamun's gold mask - sensing the excitement and wonder in the ...

Do it - but do it Quickly

Advantages: Famous History
Disadvantages: Heat, guns, poverty, filth and flies

...morning flight from Paphos to Cairo highlights including visits to the Pyramids, Sphinx, Lunch in a 5 star hotel, a visit to the famous museum with Tutankhamen's treasures, ending the day with a 2 hour cruise down the Nile, then a return flight to Paphos that same evening. The cost of the trip was around £250 including return flights and meals. The Trip The flight from Paphos to Cairo took about an hour. My first reaction to arriving at Cairo airport ...
...full of tourists on the Cairo trip. We were all split into groups upon arrival at Cairo Airport and had to wear coloured stickers depending on the coach group we had been allocated to. Not wanting to be exposed to Cairo we more or less ran to our coach, which for almost for the full day was to become our "safety bubble" There were around 30 people on our coach altogether. Upon boarding the ladies were given a rose by our Egyptian tour guide (mine ...

Cairo, The Pyramids and The Cairo museum

Advantages: Obvious - The Pyramids, The Sphinx and the Cairo museum!
Disadvantages: Very busy and very polluted but don't let that put you off

...plane to Cairo. Arriving in Cairo at midnight and being driven straight to the hotel, my first real sight of the city was early the next morning when we set out through Cairo to visit the pyramids. Driving through the morning rush hour and looking out at the city I realised I wasn't just in another country but another continent. I was in Africa. Cairo is one of the world's most populous cities and looking out at the busy streets it was easy to ...
...to donkey carts and camels and people, thousands of people. The contrast of the city is what hits you most you travel along the Avenue of the pyramids through skyscrapers and traffic and suddenly there they are. The Pyramids. The city ends at the base of the sphinx and the pyramids themselves are on higher ground at the edge of the desert a mere few hundred yards from a KFC and a neon sign advertising Coca Cola. This somehow doesn't detract from ...

Blow Your Head Off City

Advantages: different, fantastic site seeing and history
Disadvantages: gut rot, crazy gun men, terroists threat

Cairo is without doubt the most foreign place I have ever been and definitely stimulates all of the senses! As a dromomaniac (the compulsive urge to travel!)I am always seeking unique and slightly unerveing travel experiences and Cairo did not dissapoint. I made the five hour journey by road from Port Said along side the the Suez Canal accompanied by o.k cowboy gun weilding armed guards.....em you don't get this when you go to Frinton -on-sea? ...
...rule of the road in Cairo is basically that there arn't any rules! Nobody obeys traffic lights or road signs and and they drive on whatever side of the road they feel like! The noise, fumes and intense heat are surreal. The Cairo Pyramids have to be seen and touched of course and are on the outskirts of the city only a very short drive away. They are breathtaking but beware the crazy camels, their mad keepers will try to make you mount a camel ...

My home, your holiday destination

Advantages: Something for everyone, friendly and cheap
Disadvantages: high pollution and beware of rip off merchants

I live in Cairo with my Egyptian husband and baby daughter and so I thougt I would write giving an insider's view of the capital. Number one is that it's huge, enormous, dirty, hot and stiffling and I love it. The culture is apparent from the east to the west and is full of facinating sites, oasis of palm clubs, bazaars, pyramids, and night life. It's a great place to come if the people that you are travelling with like a diverse amount of activities. ...
...are some great plam clubs, hotel swimming pools, etc. with views of everything from the pyramids to palm trees (to the airport, not so romantic) and come at a reasonable price. shopping includes gold an diamonds which are a very reasonable price to the bazaars like Khan Il Khalili steeped with tradition and rip off merchants but great fun none the less where you can sample traditional cuisine and buy great gifts for the folks back home. For those ...

The less glamerous side of Cairo

Advantages: Amazing history, sun,
Disadvantages: Very polluted and stuffy at times!

...tourist does of the real Cairo and that area. Although I feel sure we only scratched the surface of life out there this is what I experienced. Attached to Cairo are three 'villages' Mottamdia, Macattum and Helwan. A mixture of badly built brick homes and corrigated iron huts, these places are the homes of the rubbish collectors of Cairo. The majority of the polutaion of these places is coptic. This is a type of orthodox Christian and becuase of ...
...while other cotacts live in Cairo and devote their lives to living, working and helping these people. They know that their lives are below the avarage standard and they are prepared to work hard to better themselves if they are given the opportunity and support that the charity I go with has been able to give. It is to help build relationships and take the kids on one of the holidays that I am returning to Cairo in August 2002. Just knowing someone ...

wonderful experience

Advantages: amazing history and impressive sites
Disadvantages: lack of night life

I visited cairo for three nights and would love to go back there. One highlight of the trip was the egyptian museum. We had a guide when we visited and i would definately recommend that anyone going there should do the same. Our guide knew the history very well and his stories were great, we found lots of hangers on joined us as we walked round! There are so many exhibits that having someone to explain them in detail was fantastic. There were queues ...
...a city break i think cairo was great and really enjoyed my time there. One drawback to some people could be the lack of nightlife but most hotels have some form of entertainment and many have discos. These can be quiet in slower seasons but the amount of things to do during the day more than makes up for this anyway. ...

Cairo - A must see experiance - ONCE!!!!!!

Advantages: Must see wonder of the world, Once in a Lifetime experiance
Disadvantages: Poverty, begging, Driving conditions.

...the chance to go to Cairo you must! It is an experiance like no other......Never again........ We booked our day trip to Cairo through a reputable tour operator whilst staying in Hurgahda and I am very glad we did. It is a place I have always wanted to visit but had my reservations for various reasons. Because we booked through a reputable company we were allocated our own personal guide for myself , my husband and my 8 year old son. The guide ...

The men in Cairo are OBSESSED with half dressed women so beware!!! they are not offensive and do not bother you but they will wolf whistle ,shout greetings to you and attempt to buy you or your children for several camels. It is all in good fun and they mean no harm. The pyramids are great to see and you get the chace to go inside if you wish. It is an experiance to go inside a pyramid and would recommend to most people HOWEVER if you are asthmatic ...

Cairo - of course it's hot and dusty, it's not England you know!

Advantages: Magnificent views, cultural city, great weather - but not for the faint hearted
Disadvantages: Many people expect tips.

Cairo is a beautiful and mezmerising city, full of wondrous places to visit and friendly people. However, don't mistake a lot of this so called friendliness. No matter where you go people will hassle you for tips. But can you blame them? There's is a culture of bargaining and many of the people are of limited means. Just be firm and say no. Don't be 'British' and feel that you cannot complain or refuse. Very often the people will get sick of trying ...
...alone. It is hot and dusty, but if you wanted mild temperatures and a non-dusty atmosphere, head to boring Europe like everyone else. It is well worth the sweat and tears [just kidding] as you will see things of such magnificent beauty, that all your troubles will soon be forgotten. The Pyramids are a must. It is even possible to enter them, but be prepared to undergo some serious walking and virtual gymnastics to do so! I was struck by the stupidity ...

People!

Advantages: unique, famous sites
Disadvantages: lots of con artists

If you like people...noise, getting out and about... famous places.. like talking then Cario is the place! I have been there twice. The famous museum, the tower, the Slahudeen Fort are all a must... not forgetting the pyramids! I would strongly advise going with a tour/hotel operator.. even better if you know someone from there they will fix you up! You have to keep sharp, and get into the habit of haggaling! There are so many people in Cario.. ...

What a city

Advantages: see article
Disadvantages: see article

Cairo is one of those cities that is still very old fashioned at grass root levels with plenty to see and do. The obvious sight is the pyramids and sphinx at Giza. I was shocked when I went there as you are travelling through large blocks of flats and then in the background is the Pyramids. They are massive and very impressive, and although you are not allowed to climb them its one of those places that you must have your picture taken at. The camel ...
...many years ago. The Cairo Tower is worth a visit and the view from the top is fabulous and you are able to see from the Pyramids to the tennis courts of the Hilton. The food is very varied and quite spicy but very reasonable. But be wary that you need a cast iron stomach to eat in the local’s restaurants and cafes I had many a dash to the loo after a dodgy dinner. The people are very friendly but beware the women are treated very differently ...

Cairo a must ?

Advantages: Friendly People and relatively cheap
Disadvantages: Heat Dust Smell

Cairo an exciting city but do you need the hustle an bustle of this metropolis. The sights make up for the dirt and dust and the people although you should keep an eye on them are really very helpfull. Getting there direct is an option but also coming in from Cyprus is another option the next time you have a fortnight there the ferry is quite cheap and the crossing is very pleasant, certainly recommended. If your in Luxor then why not jump on the ...

brilliant family holiday

Advantages: absolute chnage of senery, different way of life
Disadvantages: the men are a bit pervy..but nuffin you cant handle

i went to cairo not really knowing what to expect, i knew i'd see the pyramids and a few mummies but didnt know anything about the life there. If your planning a holiday with mates cairo is not much of a place to go, if your looking for night life and etc then sharm el sheik is your place in egypt. but if your planning a family holiday or just a peaceful reflecting time by yourself then egypt is a good place to go. i went to cairo for 7 days, but ...
...i found 7 days in cairo was enough and within that time i travelled to alexandria and spent the day there. (Alexandria is a 5 hour drive away) --HOTEL-- in cairo i stayed in the Hilton Hotel which i know sounds very posh and expensive but you will be very suprised with the prices. i stayed there for a whole week with 11 other members of my family. they only charged us £1000 for 4 double rooms for 7 days which i think was an absolute bargin. the ...

You'll need soundproofing!

Advantages: good nightlife
Disadvantages: dirty, noisy

...is ugly, polluted and overcrowded. Cairo sprawls for miles along either bank of the River Nile and is home to over 12 million inhabitants. The everpresent dust, traffic fumes, decay, noise and general chaos will put off even the most diehard city-lover, especially in the hot summer months when the problems seem to be exacerbated. The possibility of Islamic Fundamentalist attacks on tourists in Egypt remains - Foreign Office advisory notices offer ...
...Unless you are insensitive to a 24-hour symphony of car horns it is advisable to choose a hotel that is properly soundproofed. There are no beaches but most of the smarter hotels have swmming pools as well as health clubs and tennis courts. At night there is a wide selection of discos, bars and a few hotel casinos. Levels of hygiene are often poor, even in hotels, and it is not unusual for tourists to get stomach upsets; use only bottled water even ...
