Calcutta (now called Kolkata) Airport is also known as CCU (airline short code) and NSCBI (Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International) and also Dum Dum (pronounced Dom Dom and not dumb dumb as you just imagined) Airport.
There are two main parts of the airport - Domestic and International and as I've only ever flown in or out via International I'll stick to discussing my experiences of the International side.
I've flown in and out of Kolkata 3 years ... ...At least the staff at Calcutta Airport known how to smile (when prompted) which is more than I can say for the scary and overly intense staff at Muscat's Seeb Airport, but then again, that's possibly a story to be told in another review…

Advantages: Efficient (usually), Not very busy Disadvantages: Old Internation terminal, Safety concerns over road at night
Calcutta Airport is split into 2 terminals, the domestic and international, and passenger numbers using it as a gateway into India are increasing every year although by international standards it is a small airport.
INTERNATIONAL - there are direct services to and from Calcutta by British Airways (London), Amsterdam (KLM), Amman (Royal Jordanian) and Dubai (Royal Brunei) as well as various destinations in SouthEast Asia. If coming from South East ... ...this airport.
DOMESTIC - Calcutta is connected to all major Indian cities and to smaller Cities in Eastern India by Indian Airlines and Jet Airways.
FACILITIES - The International terminal is pretty basic. There aren't really any facilities to speak of on arrival oither than those essential to get you out of the building. The departures terminal has a Thomas Cook foreign exchange counter (often closed), Bank of India and airline offices. The duty-free ...

Calcutta has many connected flights for eastern part and north eastern part of India. Any holiday to north east India has almost unavoidable stop over at Calcutta. So it is better to get ready for crowdy and mismanaged airport before landing there. ...
