Haven't you been to Cambridge already? Firstly you must go there to dream of your child walking the grounds of the better colleges and collecting their degree at the end of three rumbustious years. No, not for you, you just pay for it all. Cambridge, because it has to cater for students who believe they have taste and superiority, has plenty of bars and eating houses., some good, some not so good. But you do get some variety. There is some nightlife but, again, it is geared towards the student population. Nevertheless, it is an interesting, cosmopolitan kind of place to while a way a couple of ... more

    Advantages Advantages Very pretty colleges....

Disadvantages Disadvantages ....surrounded by tourists in the summer

Cambridge is very picturesque on a sunny day - the universities and punting on the cam, it's all very lovely. The trouble is, on a sunny day - and on any day in summer - the place is flooded with tourists, and i mean flooded - the streets are packed with Japanese, Americans - all sorts - taking photos - going on guided tours etc. Very annoying. Having said that it is pretty nice anyway- and there are plenty of places you can escape to , when it all gets a bit too much. The shops in Cambridge aren't very exciting at all - but that's not why people visit. ... more

Advantages Advantages The colleges are nice, on a hot summers day lots of places to relax in

Disadvantages Disadvantages University seems to comprise the city's soul

I went to Cambridge on a day trip three years ago and within an hour, I was bored rigid. The reason was simple, once you had toured the colleges and admired their augustness there was very little to do, apart from relax in one of the many University parks ( and you can't really do that in winter). The city just seemed to lack a core that was not related to the university. Although the university is omnipresent there is no studenty/alternative area of Cambridge to explore. The only restaurant were either 'olde England' themed for the tourists or the chain restaurants you get everywhere ... more

Advantages Advantages You can buy tacky merchandise

Disadvantages Disadvantages The list is endless...

When I looked up Cambridge on the search, there were three reviews, a 3-star, and two 4-stars. Now, I actually live in Cambridge, and I'm going to give you the brutal truth about the place. The first word that springs into my mind is 'Boredom'. When you go on holiday somewhere, in evenings you might want to go bowling or ice-skating or something. Not in Cambridge! After a heart-stoppingly exciting day out, in which you, erm, looked at the colleges, or sat in a punt while some spotty student blabbers on about how great the city is, the only thing you can look forward to is going to sleep. This ... more
