Chichén Itzá, Tulum

Advantages: breathtaking, excellent insight into Mayan culture
Disadvantages: sight-seeing in the heat can be dangerous

Both Chichén Itzá and Tulum are Mayan ruins, found on the Yucatan Peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo. Both can be reached by hire car as a day trip from Cancun, so you do not have to go as part of an organized tour. (One piece of advice on hire cars - petrol stations are 150 miles apart! Do not risk running out of petrol and top up whenever possible!) Both are absolutely stunning. However, due to the shear size of Chichén Itzá I recommend visiting ...
...but after Chichén Itzá it does seem to pale in comparison. Tulum is a ruin situated on a cliff. You can look down and see the perfect, blue sea and beach and its position alone makes a visit worth while. There a numerous of large iguanas. There are often tours, which are worth while. Ask to see the fresco depicting a man on a horse (which is taken as an indication that a "foreigner" once entered Mayan territory). Chichén Itzá is a massive complex ...

THE BEST !!!!!!!!

Advantages: Brilliant beaches, day time activities and weather.
Disadvantages: NONE !!!

...went on a holiday to Cancun in Mexico. This was the best holiday I have ever been on, even though I have been to many other places such as Florida, Mexico was the best. The daytime activities were excellent with many watersports. At night there were lots of different places to go and things to do. The weather in Cancun was brilliant with clear skies every day except one where it rained but this was a refreshing change. The best bit about Mexico is ...

The two sides of Cancun - make the right choice!

Advantages: Becoming cheaper, all-inclusive packages, stunning scenery
Disadvantages: Americans, humidity

...have the opportunity to visit Cancun a few times and don't hesitate in recommending the destination. There are, however, two very different sides to this rapidly growing resort and it is vital that your holiday planning is done with this in mind OVERVIEW Cancun is situated on the east coast of Mexico, lapping against the sides of thr Caribbean. Originally a small fishing village it has rapidly grown over the last 20 years and now can be only called ...
...an even faster rate than Cancun itself. The reason to differentiate is that many operators advertise both destinations under the general header of Cancun. This is because that will be the arrival airport for both. WHY GO TO CANCUN ITSELF? As mentioned, Cancun is a purpose built tourist resort anddoes not pretend to be anything else. It's tacky, it's American, it has no shame and it works. The majority of hotels are all inclusive and the ones that ...

Cancun

Advantages: lovely beach, safe
Disadvantages: very touristy

Cancun is probably rightly considered to be the Mexican equivalent of the Ibiza/Costa del Sol/Mallorca holiday in Europe. Cancun is geared for toursim in every way. The hotels are clean and modern and filled with Germans, English and Americans. The sea is clear and the beach cleaned each day. Most hotels have a swimming pool and offer meals and entertainment as well as organized tours. For those intending to discover "real" Mexico, it is perhaps ...
...Hard Rock Café...). Still, Cancun is certainly a good base for exploring a little wider afield. There a offices representing the usual international car rental firms and you can take off on tours to the following sights (all of which are near enough to get there and back in one day): - Chichén Itzá (Mayan ruin, perhaps the most famous) - Tulum (other Mayan ruin, directly on the coast) - Xcaret (eco-archaelogical park) - Xel-Ha (cove with fish) ...

Good fun

Advantages: A very good resort with lots of different attractions
Disadvantages: Sometimes expensive, and a bit of a tourist trap. Take dollars ONLY for the airport tax.

My wife and I chose Cancun for our honeymoon and we were not disappointed. We chose an all-inclusive hotel which was fantastic: all the food and drink that you wanted and the facilities were very good, with the beach next to the hotel. Cancun is a relatively new resort and so consequently all the infrastructure is in place to provide a resort that has a lot of choice for everyone, with good public transport and all entertainment centrally located. ...
...from our enjoyment. Firstly, I would advise anyone going NOT to take american dollars, as when you expect change after paying for something, you will get your change in mexican pesos. This would not be a problem as such, but most people, be they shopkeepers or stall attendants were very crafty, often bringing in their own 'exchange rate' or unashamedly short-changing you. I guess the Mexicans have learnt a lot from the Americans in how to make money ...

Occidental Carribean Village with Thomsons

Advantages: Atmosphere, weather, nightlife (cheap clubs), shopping, hotel and club staff, English speaking
Disadvantages: Can be stormy, also can be expensive to drink and bars and go on excursions

...come out of built up Cancun into the jungle and see all the Chichens living in Mud Huts and selling hand made goods, astrological personal charts and food/drinks on the road side. They put on a little meal later with dancers and the hottest chilli sauce I've ever had. All in all, this holiday was the best of my life so far. Even though it was hot, as a fair skinned person I wouldn't say it was unpleasant. I would definately recommend it to anyone. ...

Fantastic holiday & highly recommended

Advantages: Great weather, lots to see & do, friendly people
Disadvantages: Water undrikable, public toilets are poorly stocked.

The Riviera Maya (Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen) is a wonderful place to holiday. I have been once before, and am traveling there again tomorrow. Our fist trip we stayed at the Barcelo Maya, which was an excellent & very large resort . I recommend going All-Inclusive, otherwise you may end up spending far more than you anticipated. Researching what you want to do and how much the costs are is important, just like anywhere else you might travel. ...
...50 - 100 USD. Some are better than others, so again it pays to do your research or get advice from others whom have been before. Warnings: Do not, under any circumstances use water from the tap to brush your teeth or drink. Bottled water is a must in all parts of Mexico. Showering and bathing are perfectly fine as long as you don't ingest the water. Be Prepared: Always have a roll of toilet paper or a package of tissues with you when you go somewhere ...

Sun, Sea and 'oh yes' Sex

Advantages: Brilliant time - everything you ever wanted from a holiday
Disadvantages:

I cannot recommend Cancun highly enough. It is an amazing place to visit. I went with 2 other young, free and single lads and it was fantastic, I could have stayed there for months. The night life was unbelievable - girls, cheap drinks (all inclusive for Ł15 for a whole night), and open all hours. As well as the nightlife, there are dolphins, ski-jets, speed boats, parasailing, diving, relaxing, beaches, beach volleyball. We went for two weeks which ...

CANCUN CANCUN CANCUN

Advantages: Hotel Next To Beach, Sea Sunshine & Babes
Disadvantages: Expnsive, Commercialised.

...it difficult to understand english. Cancun itself has become very commercialised, you can find all the main resturants such as TGI's and fast food places. It is also expensive, finding bargains are not easy. Transport around Cancun couldn't be easier with buses running every 5-10 minutes. There is plenty of night life too, we went Coco Bongo, a large packed out night club with various shows running every night, a new night club experience. The ...

Cancun after the hurricane

Advantages: Beautiful sea, can do excursions to ancient ruins, lots of entertainment in the hotels.
Disadvantages: Difficult to get to the main beach if not staying in a hotel on the beach.

I went to Cancun in April about 6 months after Hurricane Wilma. I was surprised to still see some evidence of the damage caused by the hurricane but I guess there are an awful lot of smaller businesses that couldn't afford to re-open. It didn't have a bad affect on my trip though. Luckily the beach 'regneration' programme had finished (the beach had been completely washed away in the hurricane) and there was now plenty of beach. A few hotels (3 ...
...beach). Some general comments about Cancun - not a great deal to do outside of the hotels (the main strip is mainly hotels, not many restaurants, although 2 new shopping centres), amazing blue-coloured sea, lots of police checking for speeding, not alot of what I would consider real 'Mexican' culture. I had the chance to visit Puerta Aventuras a little way down the coast and much preferred it there (low-rise, lots of little boutiquey shops, a bit ...

Isle of women

Advantages: The bar on the beach
Disadvantages: The hot spicy mexican food

Summer is upon us and many are wondering where to go to catch a tan. Well my advise to you sun seekers is a little island off Cancun, Mexico. Isla de Mujeres is a small island with a beautiful beach where the sea is turques and the sand is always cool due to its special properties. If you get bored of laying about under palm trees with a fruit cocktail then you can explore the island on bikes/mopeds, snorkel in the small but stunning reef, jet ...
...adventurous you can make day trips to the main land to the many Mayan ruins I the area. The bars start getting entertaining late, like everything in Mexico, but when they do the tequila flows and people dance in the street to live bands playing latin tunes. If you are temped then try to go in July when the island is not swarming with tourist, this also brings the hotel prices down depending on how good you are at haggling. Not sure about flight ...

Mexico - Here we go!!

Advantages: Hot, Hot, Hot!
Disadvantages: Overrun by Americans

First of all - this was our honeymoon so (as I'm sure you'll understand) we didn't spend as much time as we might have liked exploring Mexico. However, what we did see was nothing short of breathtaking, including our Hotel. We stayed all-inclusive at the 5-Star Moon Palace resort. The rooms were nice and comfortable, but nothing spectacular. The beds were HUUUUGE, and the double jacuzzi in every one of the 3000+ rooms is great to return to after ...
...evening, there is a hammock on the balcony to relax and watch the world go buy, just as long as you've remembered your Mosquito repellant!! The facilities and surroundings of the Hotel were the big WOW factor. It was set right on a lovely white beach, with clear blue (if a little seaweedy) sea. However, just a few miles up the coast at the Worlds second biggest coral reef, the visibility and clarity of the water was superb. The temperature was ...

If you can afford it go for it!

Advantages: Everything else
Disadvantages: no real shopping, long flight, price

I went with my family to Mexico and had a pretty amazing time! I think the main reason for this was the people I met there, lots of nice Americans, I guess coz its pretty close to them. The flight might be a big put off to some people it was about 10 hours but since I'm use to flying this didn't bother me. The hotel I was staying in was excellent. The scenery was really amazing, spectacular there were deserts as well as lush forrests with the cutest ...
...of ordinary in my mind and when we went in the pyramids they crammed too many people in and in a hot, slippy environment and although I'm not clostraphobic I felt pretty paniced it was horrible. The food was good and there were great beaches providing something for everyone. However there are a lot of souvenirs available but none of a good quality. I loved it and if your willing to endure a long flight and have the money I'd say go as soon as possible. ...

Disadvantages: too commercialised too many americans

...zone making access to downtown Cancun an exspensive trip out.The beach at the hotel is full of seaweed alougth they do make an effort to keep it clean, but it is an effort. The Moon palace is a big complex and there a golf carts to help you get around,in my opinion there are better hotels to stay at in Cancun.
