Advantages Advantages Wonderful experience, excellently presented, combination of sounds, smells and sights

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be busy in summer

***** Firstly, I’ll just make clear from the outset, that this op is on only one attraction in Canterbury, the Canterbury Tales Visitor Attraction. I have given Ciao a few product suggestions of late, but was advised to write about the attraction under the category of the nearest town, since they only wanted the major cities (Edinburgh, London etc) to have subcategories of attractions and museums. I’ve just explained this so you don’t rate me as UH straight off for writing about only one aspect of this fabulous historical city – believe me, if I could write about ... more

Advantages Advantages A little bit of calm (and it's free!)

    Disadvantages Disadvantages It's tiny

Could one visit Canterbury and not feel the inexorable tug of the majestic Cathedral? The grandeur and beauty of the building and precincts are well documented and its history formidable. In 1170 four knights, believing themselves to be acting on the instruction of Henry II, murdered Archbistop Thomas Becket in the Cathedral. Until the destruction of his shrine in 1538 by Thomas Cromwell, the cathedral became a place of pilgrimage for the old and the sick. Millions passed through in the hope of redemption in the presence of the shrine of the saint devoted to the poor and the needy. However ... more

Advantages Advantages Much more to see than you'd believe

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can get a bit busy

Well, first things first - we were quite lucky when we went to Canterbury Cathedral: we were shown round by my cousin, who works for the Cathedral itself. But don't panic if your cousin doesn't work for the Cathedral - because there are guided tours available for anyone who wants to go in. Just look for the notice at the Welcome Centre. We used to live near York, and, naturally, York Minster was somewhere we'd been before. Well, look, this is NOTHING like York Minster. It's a huge site, much larger than the Minster, and because it was part of a monastery in the past, it's quiet and away from ... more

Advantages Advantages large enclosures, saving rare breeds

Disadvantages Disadvantages John Aspinall has passed away

This is one of the two animal park owned by the late John Aspinal. John was a great man with two passions....gambling and wild animals. He used his gambling to pay for his love of animals and what a fantasic result. John's aim has always been to breed endangered animals and release them back into the wild which he has achieved with great success. His great passions were the gorrillas and the tigers. A vast majority of the park is taken up with different breeds of monkies and gorrillas. There are also tigers, elephants and wolves and many more endangered animals. The most unusual thing abiut ... more

Advantages Advantages Plenty of things to see

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be crowded in season

I love Canterbury. Wherever you go there is a piece of history, from the magnificent catheral, to the city walls, to the very modern animated figures depicting Chaucer characters in the Canterbury Tales attraction. The Cathedral and the Canterbury Tales are both well worth a visit although both can get crowded at times. The shops are wonderful either for quality goods or for picking up a souvenier of your visit. Most of the main names are there and several speciality shops as well. Plenty of places to eat and all in all a great place to visit. ... more

    Advantages Advantages Peaceful

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Lots of stairs

Only a short walk from Canterbury Castle, there is a fabulous new gallery called Castle Arts. It is quite unique as it is in an old building with lots of nooks and crannies and has an outside courtyard where some of the artwork is also displayed. There is also a basement coffee shop where at a reasonable price you can get a cup of tea and slice of cake and listen the strains of classical guitar music played by a young musician from the floor above (apparently they employ music students who are on their holidays). There are some very unusual pieces of art such as a Medusa's head on display and ... more

    Advantages Advantages It's free

Disadvantages Disadvantages You need to use your imagination

If you can't get to Bodiam, Canterbury Castle is well worth a look. It is not very far away from the centre of town and is one of the quieter visitor attractions. Best of all, you can enjoy it for FREE which is always a bonus in my book. It is interesting if you have the time to walk round the town to see the role the castle would have played in the city's defences as parts of the old city wall are still standing. It is a very peaceful spot and a lovely place to have a picnic away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. In the summer, there have been plays performed amongst the castle ... more

Advantages Advantages A great compact city with one of the highest levels for quality of life in the UK

Disadvantages Disadvantages Crowded, claustrophobic with the tourists, difficult to park in the centre of town

At last I get to say something positive. Canterbury is the city regional hub for East Kent with good road and rail access to both Victoria and Charing Cross served by two railway stations and HS1 and access to the A2. It has beautiful countryside and a breathaking cathedral and great compact city centre that fits a lot in. The city has a lot of history but despite being heavily bombed in WW2 has undergone a great amount of sympathetic redevelopment and ridding of ugly 60's buildings since the early 1990s most notably the demolition of the ugly Ricemans Department Store and the hideous ... more

Advantages Advantages Lovely cathedral, nice Medieval architecture

Disadvantages Disadvantages Pricey, crowded with visitors in the summer

Canterbury, home of the mother Church of England,is a city I know very well since my father was born at Ashford, which is only 14 miles away.It is a surprisingly small city, but during the summer months is full of tourists. There is quite a lot to see and do in this city. Pride of place has to go to the Cathedral, which is quite a beautiful building. The Canterbury Tales exhibition is worth a visit and some of the medieval structures in the city are very attractive. The modern architecture is,in my view, often not very inspired. Shopping wise Canterbury is good. Besides housing several large ... more

If you are looking for a simple Kentish pub in the heart of Canterbury, the Thomas Becket is the place to go. Just off the High Street in the road opposite the post office, you can go and relax in the old world charm of this lovely pub. It has a cosy interior - hops hanging from the rafters and old farming equipment on the walls. There is a great big fireplace next to which, more often than not, you will find one of the pub's two resident cats basking in the heat. If you find you are peckish, the pub also offers a well-priced range of homecooked food in the small restaurant area. ... more
