Advantages: Beautiful and easy to get to Disadvantages: They don't let you live there!
...Wales will be familiar with Castell Coch - although they probably aren't too sure what it was called - now you know!
If you look to the right as you cross the junction with the A470, you'll see its beautiful turrets rising above the trees and the river with its picturesque bridge. Its one of those 'landmarks' in the area that everyone will have seen and appreciated driving past, and for those who haven't, even the glimpse from the M4 is well worth ... ...part, inside and out.
Castell Coch is an olde-worlde castle that looks like it stepped right out of Hans Christian Anderssen, and certainly wouldn't look out of place in a Disney Theme Park as sleeping beauty's castle - only this one is far more like the real McCoy, complete with turrets, a drawbridge, moat and interior courtyard. It is set on a steep hill with a forest on the lower slopes.
Unlike many castles, this one isn't a ruin, and is fully ...

Advantages: Beautiful Interiors and Exteriors. Disadvantages: Not Accessible for Everyone
Castell Coch is situated in the village of Tongwynlais, just outside Cardiff (About 10/15 mins). The Castle is situated on a wooded hillside overlooking the Taff River - and, less fortunately, the M4 Motorway (The M4 isn't very noticeable from the castle, but you can get a nice view of the castle peeking out of the trees from the road.) HISTORY The castle is very beautiful inside and out. It is like something from a fairytale. There is an element ... ...1868. Both Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch are regarded as masterpieces of later Victorian Gothic Revival design. The castle is small, consisting of three towers. The castle has drawbridge, and turreted, tall conical roofs. The name Castell Coch means red castle in Welsh, and originally referred to the colour of the roof, although it is now a grey/green colour. Some of the original medieval castle can be seen on the ground level. The Victorian Gothic ...

Advantages: Lose yourself in the fantasy Disadvantages: Having to come back to reality
Castell Coach, or the 'Red Castle' on the outskirts of Cardiff (M4, jct 32, A470, then signpost), has been described as the "ultimate fairytale castle". In a vision more akin to the Bavarian countryside, or "sleeping beauty", its conical towers and needle-sharp turrets peek above the trees on a heavily wooded hillside.
Castell Coch is a late 19th Century creation of the famous architect, William Burges, built for his patron, the then richest man ... ...small town not far from Castell Coach and I use to enjoy each and every visit to this most enchanting wonder. Whenever I return to my parents I always make time to visit the castle or the beautiful woodlands that surround what was once described as the "beautiful fabled home of the world's wealthiest man." ...

Advantages: Prepare to be surprised. Disadvantages: Doesn’t take long to go around.
Driving down the M4 by Cardiff provides the best view of this ‘fairy tale’ looking castle. Once you get there via a meandering road through a forest clad mountain, your entrance to this castle is via none other that a drawbridge. Once inside, the castle opens out into a circular courtyard but the fun really starts inside the building. The grey drab exterior makes way for such fanciful frolics in interior decoration its amazing how much can do in ...
