5 Stars A bridge over, not so troubled, waters. Review with images 24/09/2009

Advantages Advantages Truly beautiful and historic

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can get very busy at times

CHARLES BRIDGE PRAGUE When I booked to go to Prague for a short break I knew nothing at all about the city. The little visitors guide I bought told me that one of the must see' places I must visit on my holiday was 'Charles Bridge' As it happens, our hotel in Malá Strana was quite close to the famous bridge and we crossed it every time that we went to the Old town. This little book also told me that the bridge would be very crowded and that it was a known place that pickpockets were in abundance. I don't know why, but when we were there (mid-week in October) the bridge was busy but never over ... more

Advantages Advantages Wonderful entertainment, fasinating architecture

Disadvantages Disadvantages The statues are copies only

No trip to Prague would be complete unless you take a walk across Charles Bridge (Karlov Most). Charles Bridge is the possibly Prague’s most recognizable landmarks: an old stone gothic bridge lined with numerous statues of saints. The bridge connects the Little Quarter (where the Castle and St Vitus’s Cathedral stand) with the old town. Once upon a time, Charles Bridge was the only way to cross the River Vltava that flows through the city. Now of course, there are several bridges that span the river. Today Charles Bridge is pedestrian only. Considering that it is said that four carriages could ... more

5 Stars Prague's famous bridge Review with images 31/10/2010
    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Historical bridge with good views.

Disadvantages Disadvantages I've heard it's often very crowded, though this wasn't the case on our visit.

Before I visited Prague I heard from a few people that Charles Bridge was certainly a 'must-see attraction' in Prague, but I should also be prepared for 'huge crowds' and being unable to move. I'm not too keen on crowds, but I did want to visit this famous bridge and decided I would just grin and bear it, whilst also securing all my belongings after hearing stories of pickpocketing. Thankfully on my visit to Prague at the end of June 2009 I discovered a less-than-packed Charles Bridge. I put this down to the weather, the whole 4 days I was in Prague it was raining and miserable, whilst this ... more

5 Stars The Charles Bridge Review with images 13/02/2008
    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Free entrance, beutifully built, historic attraction

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can get very busy

Charles Bridge is probably one of Pragues most recognised landmarks. For many years, Charles Bridge was the only way to cross the River Vltava that flows through the middle of the City. Nowadays there are many bridges connecting Old Town Prague and the New Town but there is still something very special about the Charles Bridge that makes it stand out from all the others. Charles Bridge is an old stone gothic bridge which is lined with numerous statues of saints. The bridge was built from sandstone blocks and was commissioned by Charles IV, after whom the bridge was named, in 1357. Today, the ... more

    Advantages Advantages absolutely stunning

    Disadvantages Disadvantages crowded

Five years ago my husband and I went to Prague for our honeymoon. One of the attractions that we were pointed into the direction of seeing was Charles Bridge which is built over the Vltava River. In 1357 the bridge began to be built but it wasn’t finished until some hundreds of years later in the 15th century. It measures 516 metres long and nearly 10 metres wide and it is filled with 30 big statues of historical figures including various Saints and Patron Saints. From a distant the bridge is a breath taking site which can only be seen to be believed. The crowds that are drawn to it are simply ... more

    Advantages Advantages beauty

    Disadvantages Disadvantages falling apart

Charles bridge is the oldest bridge in Prague. It was first built in the 11th century but in the 13th century it got destroyed by flooding. In 1357 Charles IV. started to rebuilt the bridge. 30 very old statues on the reiling are being replaced since 1995 (the originals are in the national museum). For a long time trams crossed charles bridge, but it is only allowed to walk. But even that might finish soon, because Charles bridge is falling apart, so they might have to reconstruct it soon, which meens to close the bridge. If you go to Charle bridge over the day you will mostly find it full ... more

Advantages Advantages architectural beauty and historical value

Disadvantages Disadvantages souvenir prices differ for foreigners and locals (experienced it myself!)

Karluv most can be found right in the heart of the oldest Prague part. For a long time already, this bridge is an emblem of the architectural beauty of this Czech capital. Among lots of bridges across Vltava, this is the most beautiful one. Being in a great condition for all this time, Karluv most belongs to the gothic style and correspond to a lot of other old buildings in Prague. Karluv mostis started and finished with massive gothic gates. On all its length the bridge is decorated with several statues of the saints. One of the main tourist attractions there is a point, from where Jan Gus ... more

    Advantages Advantages A beautiful view

Disadvantages Disadvantages Depedning where the hotel is, it can be a bit of a hike to get to and all the side streets are easy to get lost in

I first visited Prague this February on a college trip and by accident stumbled upon this bridge. I made the agonising trip to the top of the tower and the views were well worth it..looking over towards the old town and the castle epitomised the total beauty of Prague for me. This was made considerably more romantic because it was Valentine's Day and there were lots of luck ladies walking aroung with roses. The sights of home have never seemed the same since. Of course, it is not the only beautiful part of Prague but definitely one you should visit. There are also stalls along the bridge and I ... more

this is quite simply the most beautiful bridge in the world. it is not like the untouched and quaint magdalen bridge in oxford, rather it is gothic and harsh, it is challenging and dirty, it is real life. it is lined with statues aall of which are dark and macabre. it was destroyed by a bomb but has been successfully rebuilt. i have walked across it at 5am and it was singularly the most beautiful thing. go there see it, see the traders, buy from them, at vastly inflated prices - it is a piece of histiry and a great one at that. ... more
