Eastern Liguria: Cinque Terre ( I lived there!)

Advantages: Beatiful places
Disadvantages: not live there

...is certainly the land called Cinque Terre. The name derives from the fact that their territory is made up of 5 countries. Going from La Spezia to Genoa you will find Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. These villages perched on steep slopes overlooking the sea. The only exception is Monterosso, the largest of the 5 that has a thin flat strip that ends with a beautiful beach. The economy of the Cinque Terre has always been based ...
...the spectacular scenery of the Cinque Terre in the wilderness merges with the work in human terraces overlooking the sea. Not for nothing the Cinque Terre have been declared World Heritage by UNESCO. The inhabitants of these places, in fact, have torn land to cultivate the mountain centimeter per centimeter. Do you think some terraces are so impervious that until a few years ago the harvest was done by boat because the only way to reach them was ...

This is Italy!

Advantages: sunshine, small, feels like Italy
Disadvantages: lots of tourists (but nothing like Rome or Venice)

...2 gorgeous days in the Cinque Terre, in April 2004, at the end of about 2 weeks travelling through various parts of Italy and I have to say this was the highlight of the trip. Cinque Terre means "5 towns" and that's exactly what it is. Five gorgeous little villages joined by an excellent walking track. We arrived late in the afternoon, at the nearest train station, after a bit of a journey to get there (there were a number of changes along the way, ...
...of accommodation all over the Cinque Terre then you can't go wrong. As we had throughout our Italian trip, my sister and I soon decided to sample the local cuisine and wash it down with a bottle or two of lovely Italian red wine. There are quite a few restaraunts in the Cinque Terre and we sampled some while we were there. The quality ranged from good to superb. I had the most delicious ravioli I had ever tasted in a restaraunt we discovered in ...

How to ruin a place

Advantages: unspoilt
Disadvantages: over run by americans

Cinque Terre literally means five lands. Twelve miles of very rocky shoreline weave its way along the top left hand of Italy in the Ligurian coast just west of La Spezia. The coastline is punctuated with five small villages, Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare. There are no cars or roads connecting these villages and the only access is by rail or coastal path. The rosy pastel and deep red houses perched on cliffs cascading ...
...out from their surroundings of rock and terraced vineyards. Add to this the lack of cars and you have the ingredients for a place where time stands still. The coastline has managed to remain pure by the steepness of the terrain, which throws building any large hotel complexes out of the window along with the fact that the area is now protected by UNESCO and is deemed a world heritage site and national park. Accommodation is a little hit and miss ...

Tellaro

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

It's last village on the east coast of the Poet's gulf. It blossoms among a litle peninsula sloping down towards the sea. On the most extreme point of the peninsula there is an old church dedicated to St.George during the second part of the XVI century. The church overlooks a lovely little square surrounded by the houses of the old walled village. In front of the little square you can see a landing-place protected by breakwater. In Tellaro, history ...
...the pirate "Gallo d'Arenzano" coming from Biserta during a foggy night, with six ships, wanted to conquer the village. Marco Arzellino was on the watch on the bell tower and bound the bell-rope to his leg so as not to fall asleep. Suddenly he dropped into a deep sleep the bell rang just when the pirates were landing. The sudden alarm put toflight the little fleet and the village was saved. The legend, instead, tells that the alarm, on the occasion, ...

Lerici Castle

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

In the Roman Age it was a roman naval base. In the Middle Ages, when Genoa and Pisa where fighting for supremacy of the sea, Lerici being the border, was heavily contended. At the beginning of XIII century the inhabitants of Pisa won the dispute and built in Lerici a fortified naval base, a castle and a walled village which took the place of the ancient small village and of St. Mart's church that was destroyed by the saracens. In 1256 Lerici was ...
...its dominion until its fall. You can see some remains of the old pisan village near "La Calata"(that is the quay of the port): the turreted door amidst the ancient walls. There are also some remains of the village built by the Genoese: some aristocratic-houses of XVI century, among them the one where Andrea Doria lived in 1527. The Castle is Lerici's most important monument. It's a masterpiece of Italian military architecture of the Midle Ages. Its ...

San Terenzo

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

Once it was a fisher village. San Terenzo was discovered in XIX century by these famous tourists of the gulf Shelley and Byron. Today San Terenzo is a populous and bright village, in a splendid position. The sea, the beach and the houses are very close to each other, so San Terenzo maintains the Ligurian spirit. The Castle is on the east side; it's a quadrangular for of the end of Middle Ages. It's built on the top of the hill from which you can ...

Inside you can admire a base-relief by Domenico Gar, a XV century painting of the Virgin Mary by Arena and two large paintings by Domenico Fiasella. Villa Magni its portico was on the sea front. Shelley lived here in 1822 until leaving for the tragic trip which the shipwreck on Viareggio's coast. Villa Marigola ...

Cinqueterre

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...Monterosso - make up the Cinque Terre. Over the years, the people have succeeded in imposing their will on this difficult landscape through terrace cultivation consisting of narrow strips of land on the hillside called "fasce". Perhaps it is the air made salty by the sea spray on stormy days, together with the hard work that the farmers have been carrying out for hundreds of years, that have made the grapes so sweet and the olives and lemons so ...
...trade and commerce to the Cinque Terre, but it was abandoned again during the rule of the "Repubblica di Genova". It is probably because the road was abandoned again that the area has preserved all its natural and untouched beauty. Man has had to build countless walls "muretti" and steps to support the steep strips of land, and from research carried out by naturalists it seems that, over thousands of years, the inhabitants of the Cinque Terre have ...

Go there before the tourists

Advantages: Beautiful
Disadvantages: None

Cinque terre means “5 lands” in Italian, more specifically 5 villages. In fact there are 5 small villages, perched on the coast, and best reached either by train or by sea. You can also get there by car, but, especially in summer and during the weekends, there is a possibility of a headache! They used to be a partly undiscovered gem of Italy when I first visited them 20 years ago, but this is no longer the case. Still, out of the peak turist season, ...

You can bring your own wine, or buy it locally, 5 terre are famous for a very special wine, and each village has got a shop where you can buy bread, cured ham and cheese for tasty sandwiches, AND, do not forget, Focaccia, the local speciality ...

Cinque Terre

Advantages: Scenery
Disadvantages: The crowds

...has already been said about Cinque Terre (5T). All the detail is already there. Instead, I thought I'd post some of my impressions of it. Firstly, the scenery is breath-taking. I'm a pretty well-travelled kind of guy but I can't think of many places that can match the awesome beauty of this part of the Ligurian coast. I'm talking about the mountains, the cliffs, the little coves, the sea and the beautiful villages themselves that look so picturesque ...
...around them. Secondly, I was surprised at how reasonable the prices were. We paid €1 for two 250 ml bottles of water - I was expecting to pay triple that. Similarly, the restaurants and bars are not a rip off and the locals, despite all the tourists are still polite and friendly. Thirdly, the walks between the villages are very easy. If you only visit the villages (either by train or boat) you will miss out on the best views. Don't be put off by ...

...front of Portovenere, called the Cinque Terre. The Cinque Terre are so divided: - the biggest village, Monterosso that is divided in two parts: the resident part on the hill, and the old town; - Vernazza with the ancient church of Sant John the Baptist (1300 or so); - Corniglia, where the cost if full of small lovely bays; - Manarola, a small town with old charcteristic houses that stand directly on the sea rocks. - From Manarola you can reach ...

This part of the Riviera is cheaper boht for restaurants and hotels: if you want to spend some days in Liguria, try to find a hotel in this part of the region. Then, in the ...
