In the long bar you can sip delicious Singapore Slings ( at about £7 a glass) and eat monkey nuts to your hearts content. The long bar is the only place in Singapore where you are allowed to 'litter' so the tradition is to eat monkey nuts and throw the shells on the floor! Beware Singapore Slings are much more alcoholic than they taste!

A good hotel to stay in close to the colonial area is the Westin - it's very tall providing fantastic views and the rooms are really spacious. Like most things in Singapore it's also quite expensive. ...

...a wide range of Chinese dim sum and some finger snadwiches and canapes.
Also try the sweet dessert soups which normally have egg yolk , chestnut and sago.
The decor in the restaurant will make you think you'll in the colonial era.
Singapore Sling is also served within the restaurant. ...

With Raffles' accommodation being out of our budget we decided to have lunch there instead in the Tiffin room. Being careful to conform with the dress code(no shorts, no open sandals for men etc) we arrived by taxi and were ushered in by some very impressively dressed footmen. Tiffin lunch consists of a vast array of curries served buffet style plus some mouth watering desserts. We thought it was excellent value at about £15 per head and half price ...

Advantages: Rough semblence of the past Disadvantages: Was it ever like that???
...remember all the pictures of colonial houses and buildings through old photographs, old black and white photographs. I can't even try and imagine them in colour. There has beena restoration of old shophouses along the waterfront for some time now, and I sometimes wonder, as I pass them, on the accuracy of the restoration. Was the red always such a rich shade, or was it always faded like that run down by time. It's hard to imagine one's past when ...
