4 Stars An Italian city; voluptuous and romantic Review with images 10/01/2012

Advantages Advantages Super architecture, a real buzz when walking in the old quarter,

Disadvantages Disadvantages Too glitzy for some and very, very busy

The city of Como has two distinct faces: one historic, facing the lake, and one industrial, which extends into the Brianza. Como is best approached from the north, either across the lake or along one of the lakeside roads, when the town is at its most magical: green, grey and a soft ochre. Bathed in golden sunlight, the walls of the old town retain a sobriety that is distinctly Lombard. The first craftsmen to make the town famous were the master architects and stonemasons from the region, known as Maestri Comacini; the town's industrial future was assured by the introduction of silk ... more

Advantages Advantages The Cities of Como and Bellagio around the Lake, close to Switzerland/Milan, Can tour Lake by Boat

Disadvantages Disadvantages You won't be able to stay forever (unless your Rich and George Clooney).

Lakes surrounded me as a child. Every summer, my family and I would go to a Lake somewhere nearby and rent a houseboat for a week. These bodies of water aren't often crystal clear. I've been to some that are. Some that when you are in the middle of the lake you can still see almost to the bottom, it's that clean. Regardless if a Lake is murky or clear, they all hold a special beauty to them. In a lot of ways, I love Lakes more than Oceans. Sure, Oceans have waves, facinating sea creatures, and beautiful beaches but they are almost too....vast. You go out on the ocean for a mile or two and ... more

Advantages Advantages nice scenery & architecture, fine cuisine, great shops, very relaxing place

Disadvantages Disadvantages nothing REALLY spectacular in a country full of attractions

Just a few miles south of the Swiss border, Como is the first town in Italy. Very different in style and culture to Italy's thriving cities, Mediterranean holiday resorts and antique sights, Como exudes the mild charm of Lombardy region. I was a bit surprised myself when I realised that I hadn't written anything yet on Ciao about one of my favourite countries, Italy. So when famous Ciaoer ConnaisseurHaggler said she was going to nearby Milano two weeks ago, I decided it was time I introduced the northern Italian region of Lombardy, and its pearl, Como. Como is two things in one - the city of ... more

4 Stars Ferried Around a Lakeside Paradise Review with images 24/06/2005
    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Spectacular scenery, Italian food, great ferries, not overrun by tourists

Disadvantages Disadvantages Attractions close smack in the middle of the day, credit cards rarely accepted

Visiting Lake Como in the first week of June 2005 it was refreshing to find such a beautiful place not overrun with tourists. We stayed in a villa rental, Casa Pree, located in Rezzonico, a small town about 2 miles north of Menaggio on the western side of the lake. I'll review Casa Pree, the villa where we stayed, at the end of this article, first though here's a rundown of taking a vacation on Lake Como. Getting around the lake you have two choices: - Windy narrow lakeside roads - Ferries Driving Around Lake Como The roads we took around western lake Como were wide enough in places for only a ... more

    Advantages Advantages Many

Disadvantages Disadvantages None I can think of

Once upon a time there was a glacier that ran, in an upside down "Y" shape, through the Italian Alps down to less prominent mountains. When the glacier melted a beautiful lake shone in its place. Right at the bottom of one of the two arms of the "Y" (the left one, looking on the Italian map, in the Lombardy region) there is a town called Como. Last year, my husband and I, stopped in Como for two nights to break the long drive from London; we were going all the way down to Rome. In Switzerland, the motorway runs alongside lovely big lakes, the scenery was certainly more than beautiful but soon ... more

5 Stars The world's capital of silk Review with images 29/06/2006
    User recommends the product
Como is a beautiful town, of approximately 80.000 inhabitants, located on border of the Lario, the ancient name of the Lake Como. Lake Como, one of the most romantic places in Italy, is the third largest lake in Italy, after Garda Lake and Lake Maggiore. Lake Como is located 25 miles north of Milan. Como and Milan are connected by bus and train. The city of Como is a center of artistic and cultural importance, combined with important industrial and commercial activity, and is famous for the production of precious silk, exported throughout the world. In Como there are many attractions and you ... more

Advantages Advantages very cute city on the lake

    Disadvantages Disadvantages lot's of traffic

Como is a beautiful city on the lake. You can easy reach Como from Milan by train in less then an hour or, if you are coming from North Europe, Como is the first city across the border with Switzerland. Como downtown is very cute and full of historical monuments. Only a couple of minutes by walk from Piazza Cavour, the main square of the city, near the lake, you can arrive in Piazza del Duomo where you can visit the Cathedral. An other very good and very ancient square is Piazza San Fedele, with the San Fedele Church. It's only 10 minutes by walk from the Cathedral. Como is also known as "silk ... more

Advantages Advantages Not far from Milan

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

Como is situated at the end of the Lake of Como, surrounded by high mountains. It is not far from Milan and it well linked to it by bus and train, with Ferrovie Nord, a privately owned company. You may want to go to Como to see the lake, the town iteself is worth a quick visit. In summer you can bath somewhere in the lake, if you have a car and can go along the shoreline. You can also go to the mountains or the near Switzerland, as many locals do, to buy cheaper petrol, chocolate and cigarettes. tHERE IS A NICE VILLA IN cOMO YOU CAN VISIT, BUT i DO NOT REMMEmber the name, but you should find ... more

It's in the north part of Italy and in the border of Switzerland. the lake is quite huge size and the view is great. We stayed in a hotel and had a nice meal. we could look over the lake from our balcony, which is really vice. we had a walk after the meail and enjoy the nice summer evening. It's such a relaxing place compare to other city in Italy like Rome and Venice. we jumped on the boat the next morning and were showned around. Then stop somewhere for a lunch break. It felt like we were in Switzerland indeed. relaxing and easy. Quite a nice place to have weekend break, certainly a popular ... more

Como is a very good place to buy silk products. Until 2 years ago there was a factory outlet in one of the secondary roads coming from Varese, I am not sure if it is still there, I would assume it is. You could buy designer ties for basement prices, without the label on them! Apart from this, Como is a good place to explore the nearby area, if you rely on public transport, while, if you have your own car, I would probably look for a place somewhere along the lake. The lake itself is pretty scenic. In summer it is possible to bath, although not in Como, while in winter you can go skiing in the ... more
