Advantages: Fun, cheap, exciting day out
Disadvantages: Very long way from central Manhatten

Boasting a 70 year-old roller-coaster, Coney Island theme park has been entertaining New Yorkers for generations. A low priced arm-band will get you unlimited rides on all the attractions inside the fenced area (though there are a few independent rides beyond the marked area, cashing in on the popularity, but these are probably to be avoided, since you would have to pay extra, and it seems likely that these may not come under the same safety checks ...
