Advantages: A lot of different and varied activities for young and old Disadvantages: Price of entrance if visiting once and cost of food/souvenirs etc
INTRO: In June 2009 my husband and I took my daughter and boyfriend to the USA for two weeks. We spent time in Virginia (Williamsburg) and Tennessee (Gatlinburg) mainly but drove 3,000 miles during this time. Before we went we did quite a lot of research and one of the places that was near Gatlinburg was Dollywood and my daughter suggested we visit. WHERE IS IT AND HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Dollywood is Dolly Parton’s theme park in Pigeon Forge, Seivercounty, ... ...has created jobs for a lot of local people of all ages; indeed the lady who served us our corn dogs (well, when in Rome...) looked about 102 at least and service was a tad slow. The theme park is a little way out of Pigeon Forge but there is a free trolley bus which will take you to the Park from Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg with several trolley bus stops. We drove there which was a mistake because for the pleasure of parking your car we had to pay ...

Advantages: Great value family attraction with plenty to see and do Disadvantages: The pace is relaxed if not slow - unless you're on the rollercoaster!
Dolly Parton often jokes that she bought 'Silver Dollarland' and transformed it into a family fun park because it was a cheap way of providing an income to members of her extended family and former employees. There's probably some truth in it but don't be fooled, the entertainment at Dollywood is no afterthought.
Dolly Parton grew up in the Smoky Mountains and at her theme park you can visit a reconstruction of the two bedroom shack she grew up ... ...with so little space but then it's difficult to image the old world crafts in the area thriving and providing employment. It helps that amongst the attractions in the Craftsmans' village you can visit a carriage shop and a blacksmithy and watch the traditional arts practised.
There are the usual range of rollercoasters, dodgems and other rides designed for children of all ages. There is a large aviary housing American Eagles and regular falconry ...

Advantages: Family fun, something for everyone Disadvantages: Entrance fee is high, can get very crowded
Dollywood is very much Dolly Parton's, you can tell from the very outset. As soon as we parked and took the trolley to the entrance (it's a big parking lot!!) We were told to remember area DE, where we parked our car, as Dolly's Earrings. Saying that, our trolley driver was funny and friendly and it made even that trip across the parking lot fun. The rides are mixed, some for the young and the timid and others for the older and braver. I won't go ... ...on the Dollywood website. One thing I was impressed by was that instead of your usual disinterested teenager running the rides, they were run by a very efficient group of senior citizens. It was also good to see local craftsman in some of the shops creating and selling their handicrafts.
My kids managed to get onto 6 rides during the course of the day. It was the middle of the summer and often the lines were long as is usual with any theme park. ...
