Advantages: Good Food! Great Ambiance. Superb Value For Money. Disadvantages: Can Be Very Busy. A Couple Of Lacklustre Dishes.
Whilst food, either cooked at home by my superbly talented wife, or eaten out could be regarded as something of a passion of mine, writing foodie or restaurant reviews is not. Neither am I myself much of a cook I'll have you know!
However having discovered Donatello Ristorante two years ago, we have eaten there, probably a dozen times in the last eighteen months, this is at least twice as many times as we have eaten out anywhere else during the ... ...time to tell you all about it.
This very well known Italian restaurant, situated in the most historic part of the city of Brighton & Hove i.e. Brighton Place in The Lanes, certainly requires no plug from me in order to drum up trade. I will not give you detailed instructions here on how to find it - pop into any shop in the Lanes area and ask - they will point you in the right direction. Locally, it is an extremely well known and established family ...

Advantages: great service, great food, great ambience Disadvantages: none really
Donatello - a restaurant I would never have really thought about going to had I not been on a hen weekend organised by a company who booked us "hens" into Donatello for what they described as a 2 course meal included as part of our package. Of the seven of us who went to dine there, none had eaten there before and we arrived about 15 minutes later than we were due. We were not made to feel like naughty school kids for being late (as has happened ... ...various circumstances have caused us to be slightly late - with a snooty comment such as "we are extremely busy and other diners are waiting for tables"). Anyway the waitress showed us to our table which was on the first floor or was it? We walked in from street level and were escorted upstairs but looking out of windows we were still on street level! I found this very clever and very curious! The restaurant seemed to be full booked - every table ...

Advantages: cost, good atmosphere Disadvantages: not the place for funeral receptions
Ooh la la. I can't believe no one has written about Donatellos! Ooh la la. Well mi hearty's, gather round and i shall tell you of a magical place where pasta grows on trees and the pizzas are bigger than your face. Oh it's true!
Donatellos is situated in Brighton's posher south laines (as apposed to the north ones) It's just round the back of the old Hanningtons which by the way i'm going to personally start a campaign to reopen, although it was ... ...and painted blue!! The restaurant itself is huge. It's spread over 2 floors although there are a couple of levels on each. Actually, maybe three floors. Oh confusing, butit's a big big place. However, despite this it maintains a small restaurant type feel to it. They manage to squeeze a lot of people in which helps keep a lively atmosphere. Upstairs is where most of the large parties take place and there are smaller more intimate tables downstairs ...

Advantages: Cheap Disadvantages: Hen and stag party invasions
I have been going ot this restaurant for 9 years and first discovered it whilst I was a student at university.
It is open for both lunch and dinner both of which have deals on. It serves simple but lovely italian food at a good price for what you get.
They do things such as £9.95 for two courses. They take bookings which a lot of brighton restaurants don;t so at least you know you will get a seat. THey have a very small bar area where you can wait ... ...divided up into three main areas on three floors. I have eaten on all of them and they all offer the same kind of atmosphere. The only thing about being upstairs is that when you want to come down you will get in the way of the waiters and waitress' coming up with food. The pizza's are huge and the best value for money in my opinion. There are many toppings to suit all tastes. Starters are simple but thats what you pay for, garlic bread, salad, uncooked ...
