Honeymoon in a hideaway

Advantages: so much to do, so much to see
Disadvantages: you would need to be there for a month to get everything in.

I am not long back form a lovely honeymoon in the New Forest - the perfect place for a quiet, romantic escape from the world. Did you know, by the way, that the origin of honeymoon is an old fertility practise in which newlyweds would share a glass of mead (honey wine) for a month (moon) after marriage! We have been doing this. The New Forest is largely in Hampshire but there is quite a bit in Dorset, which is where we stayed. The reason it is "New" ...
...have been forested, it was turned into farmland, and later turned back into forest to be used as a royal hunting ground - for this to happen, all the local people were moved from their land. We stayed in Alderholt Mill neare Fordingbridge - a lovely area whre most houses have thatched rooves. Fordingbridge is on the Avon and is a very sweet little town and the villages around it are lovely. Alderholt itself is grim and well worth avoiding. We walked ...

The monkeys are out of this world!

Advantages: Seeing primates playing happily.
Disadvantages: Knowing they have bad histories.

Have you ever visited Monkey World near Wareham in Dorset? It is well worth the trip if you enjoy watching primates. Monkey World was set up in 1987 by Jim and Alison Cronin, to provide sanctuary for the badly treated primates of the world. Most of them have awful stories of cruelty to tell. Monkey World is set in about 40 acres of woodland and the animals are in large compounds arranged in colonies. It costs about £17.00 for a family ticket which ...
...to have a picnic and play areas for children to let of steam, one area is full of old tyres for children to stack and climb on. There are regular talks by the keepers, so you can learn more about the natural habitat of the animals. There is even a pets corner where you can touch tame farm animals. My favourite part is watching the baby chimps. in the nursery compound, I also like to watch Gordon the baby orang-utan. If you want a taste of what ...

Good old Weymouth by the sea

Weymouth definately has something for all the family. A seaside resort which is totaly second to none, Just imagine a Big safe beach and many traditional attractions. If you head towards the town you will discover the heritage and picturesque harbour. It was approx. 200 years ago that Weymouth became known as a resort this was after it was visited by george III, since then the town has maintained its ever growing popularity. A absolute mix of the ...

Dorset,A Greatly Underated County

Advantages: Unspoilt. Traditional. A Microcosm of England. Compact
Disadvantages: Very few.

Dorset is I think one of the greatly under-rated counties of England. A lot of people going to the South West for their holidays target Devon and Cornwall - and both are delightful-but at best hurry through Dorset. Yet this county has a great deal to offer the visitor ranging from typically English, rustic, villages, to the sophistication of Bournemouth, the elegance of Poole, the delights of Georgian Weymouth, the beauty of the coastline and the joys ...
...Literary buffs will find Dorset is no backwater for this is Hardy country and it was the home for part of his life of T.E.Lawrence.Dorset also has its place in agrarian history as the Tolpuddle Martyrs serve to remind us. Celebrities are beginning to "discover" Dorset, Meryl Streep, filmed at Lyme Regis and then are now reports that Madonna is buying a country mansion in Dorset. Lulworth Cove is a spot well worth visiting,as are the small towns ...

"Dorset is bootiful..."

Advantages: Beautiful scenery, lots of things to interest anyone & everyone
Disadvantages: Can get crowded in the summer months

...Plus, don't forget that author Thomas Hardy lived in Dorset - and a visit to his cottage makes an interesting day out. Dorset really does have it all: wonderful scenery, great attractions, a rich heritage (including its fossil-rich coastline) and some of the friendliest people I've ever met. ...

Lulworth Cove - Peace Personified

Advantages: A unique location that you will remember forever
Disadvantages: Parking and road closures

Nestling amongst the firing ranges of the Royal Artilliary, Lulworth Cove is a treasure to behold. My first visit was as a child, many years ago, and I have regularly visited ever since. Why? Because if you are looking for a hide away then this is the perfect place although in summer it can be overcrowded with walkers, hikers and, over the Bank Holiday weekend, bikers. Take the steep walk over the well trodden cliff tops to Durdle Door and marvel ...
...the cove and over the cliff tops and view the fossilised forest at low water. Within the car park you will find a visitor centre. This has just about every piece of information on the area you could wish for. Giving you various routes to walk and information about the geology of the area amongst other things. Adjacent to the centre is a wine shop selling fruit wines, very quaint but quite expensive and not to everyones taste!!! There is also a cafe ...

Swanage and the Isle of Purbeck

Advantages: Lovely scenery, nice easy going place
Disadvantages: None!

Swanage and the surrounding Isle of Purbeck has some of the most unspoilt scenery in Southern England. I love Swanage with a passion. If I could move there I would. The town is small and compact and exactly as it was when I first visited it in 1976! Oh I lied they have built a jetty midway along the beach! The town has two main roads coming into it, one from Corfe Castle and the other from Studland and Poole. As you come into town the Ballard down ...
...majestically down to the sea at Ballard Point. On the right of the bay is the Durlston Country park which is a very nice walk if you’re fit enough. There is the old Victorian pier which has been rebuilt over the years by sponsorship funds raised by the “sponsor a plank” drive which costs about £30 ish and you get an engraved brass plate on your plank as a permanent testament to your commitment. Regular boat trips leave from the pier everyday to ...

Paradise....in England

Advantages: Relaxing
Disadvantages: none

...sunbathing on a beach in dorset nice sand and clear sea. Ah paradise. Dorset really is just an amazing place. When I went I was very lucky to get 2 weeks of pure sun but England being England it rained at the end so it flooded. But don't let this put you off. If you go to Dorset I reckon mend you to camp at a campsite called Burnbake campsite, it is a nice place in the middle of a pine wood and it is very cheep. I was very lucky to get a ride on ...
...pay a small price for one which is well worth it. Poole and Bournemouth are big cities which is very good for shopping and having a good day out. There isn't much accomadation by the beaches so if you want to go to them you will need a car. There are many small towns which are worth seeing like Swanage which is a nice town with a few shops. I defiantly reckon mend this place to anyone. ...
