BRITAIN'S FRONT LINE FORTRESS

Advantages: A Full Day Out. Educational. Interesting. Centuries of History. The Views
Disadvantages: Go early if you want to take an underground tour.

...50% of these images in Dover in reality, the Blue Birds and Dame Vera have so far eluded me. If, like us, you are regular travellers to the continent via Dover, then you cannot have failed to have seen Dover Castle perched up high above the White Cliffs overlooking the town to the west and port to the due south. I wonder how many of you have actually visited Dover Castle as a tourist attraction though….. …..never mind, join us then, if you will ...
...for £4.50. I have visited Dover Castle on around six occasions over the last twenty years, the last time being on a beautiful August (2005) day, escorting my wife, her sister and my Polish parents-in-law. Although Dover Castle is a very prominent landmark, for some extraordinary reason I never find getting there in the car very easy. 1000 years of English History

Advantages: More history than you can point a spear at
Disadvantages: Might be better to visit nearer the summer season

...of times I've passed through Dover on my way to the continent. Passing through seemed to be the right thing to do, as it's perhaps not the most attractive of Kentish towns. DOVER is one of the busiest ports in England, which is not surprising as it's the closest point of the UK to mainland Europe. When the Romans occupied the country, they built an 80ft high lighthouse, constructed of the local flint, on the remains of an old iron age fort. It then fell to the Anglo-Saxons to make their mark and it's thought the site became a fortified town - the remains of the Roman lighthouse lie next to ...

Our Castle for Keeps

Advantages: Enjoyable day out, easy to get too, reasonable price
Disadvantages: Steep hills and the weather needs to be good

...live in the Town of Dover Kent I thought I would write a review on the castle and how it has become the Stronghold of England. It does make you instantly think of the White Cliffs, and cross Channel ferries ,but i feel the jewel of the town of Dover and personnally England is the magnificent Dover castle. Getting To The Castle. Obviously the castle is in Kent as I stated above and any further east in the south of England you would be in the Channel! ...
...on the Eastern hills of Dover can be seen upon approach into Dover via both these motorways. On foot, from the train Station or bus station it again is very well signposted and there is a bus which runs past the castle every 30 minutes which drops you off on the route to Deal ( neighbouring town) and runs back on the half hour too. Climbing up the hills is of course a strenuous exercise and you do need to be physically fit to be able to do this ...
