Advantages: wonderful countryside almost in town; castle; compact centre Disadvantages: disappointing architecture; shopping not great; not so easy to get to by public transport
As other reviewers remark, Dover is usually seen as just a ferry terminal. To me this is pretty weird, actually, as it is virtually impossible NOT TO notice the castle and the cliffs which are the main attractions.
I came to live in the town 12 months ago so I am still a fresh resident and still treat the place a bit like a tourist. This is the reason for my constant updating of this review as well, as I keep discovering new things! *This time I ... ...southern M25 in good traffic); Dover is surprisingly hard to get by public transport. Train from Waterloo East or Charing Cross takes about 2 hrs and costs 20 GBP for a day-return; a National Express coach takes over 3 hrs to Victoria at the cost of 11 GBP day return (this makes day return not terribly viable option).
If you are staying in Kent, there is plenty of local public transportation (bus and train) from the likes of Ashford, Canterbury ...

Advantages: If you sucked all the people and shops out of it, it'd look nice Disadvantages: Crime, drunks, no jobs, no investment, no shopping, no hope
...the risk of irking fellow Dover reviewers, you're best of trusting my review - I know pretty much every nook and cranny. Dover is known as the gateway to Europe. Does your house have it's own gate? Go look at it. The gateway area itself is usually pretty sparse - after all, all your asthetic efforts will go into what lies beyond the gate. The same applies to Dover. Sorry I couldn't hold your suspense about my opinion for longer, but as you will soon ... ...we go.
HISTORY
Dover has been well known and an integral part of Britain since the Romans. There are still Roman remains that can be seen from the Discovery Centre (more on that later), and of course, we have the Roman Painted House and Bronze Age Boat. Throughout every major conflict the UK has been in, Dover has been vastly important as a base, and as the first line of defense against invading Germans. Although saying that, my guess is that the ...

Advantages: Historic, breathtaking, a full day out Disadvantages: Steep walks, quite tiring
Dover Castle is one of the countries - if not Europe’s - mightiest fortresses. It stands proudly upon the magnificent White Cliffs overlooking the sea and guarding the shortest crossing point between England and the rest of the European continent.
The castle is a truly imposing site and has a very long and colourful history making for a very enjoyable and full day out. There is plenty to experience here as you explore the castle complex all ... ...Roman Lighthouse. Roman commanders developed Dover as a port in the first Century AD and the lighthouse was constructed as a guide to ships. An impressive structure which has certainly stood the test of time and remains one of the finest examples of Roman construction still standing in the UK. Next to the lighthouse is the Saxon Church dedicated to St Mary-in-Castro and dated about 1000 AD, it is typical in its construction in that it is cruciform ...

Advantages: Busy port. Shopping is reasonably good. White cliffs and Castle are attractive Disadvantages: Lacks character
...the White Cliffs and imposing Dover Castle located on a dramatic hill top setting blend well with the town's bustling port.
You can enjoy a birds-eye-view of the busiest passenger port in the world from the Langdon Cliffs picnic site.
The town itself frankly is not particularly distinguished. It is rather lacking in architectural character compared to the likes of Canterbury, Rochester or nearby Sandwich. It does not have the Edwardian elegance ... ...and breakfast places, especially along the Folkestone Road. Other attractions include the White Cliffs Experience, the Transport Museum and the Roman Painted house in New Street.
The surrounding countryside is most attractive and Dover can serve as a base for touring East Kent.

...merely seem to think of Dover as a port or a quick stop before catching the ferry, but if you take a moment to linger a little longer, you could be surprised. High above the town is the castle, which is well I think, worth a visit, underground passages are also open, with exhibitions relating to the war period. Down in the town is the White Cliffs Experience, with animated figures from Roman times up to the second World War telling you a little about ...
