A weekend in Dublin

Advantages: Friendly, smiley & relaxed people
Disadvantages: Rain and more rain!

...drinking. We went to Dublin in January this year, and had a fantastic time. Our flights cost £55 each return (incl. taxes) from Heathrow to Dublin on Aer Lingus. We booked online - www.aerlingus.com. The flights themselves were pretty good, with no delays and friendly service, which makes a pleasant change from Air France. Plus, our bags arrived with us this time (see previous review on Air France). The only thing about Aer Lingus is that you have ...
...We got the bus from Dublin airport to the city centre, which meant that we only had to walk for 5 minutes with our bag in the rain to our accommodation. We just got one of the local airport buses, it was OK, but not really set up for baggage etc (it cost 8 Euros for both of us). We took the Airbus to the airport on Sunday, which was a better service, but a little more expensive (6 Euros each). Anyway, our accommodation was at Abbey Court Hostel, ...

You don't even need a passport

Advantages: Near
Disadvantages: Crowds

Why is Dublin the fastest growing city in Europe? Because it just keeps doubling and doubling and doubling! Odd that seemed funnier in my head. Anyhow to begin, some confessions. I am not Irish. I don't live in Dublin. I don't visit Dublin every other day that has a 'Y' in it and I don't even drink Guinness very often. However, I recently organised a trip to take a group of thirteen for what was my first ever visit to the Emerald Isle. So if you ...
...minute flight from Bristol to Dublin wasn't for anything as exciting as a forthcoming marriage but because Ryanair were offering flights for £1. When you see something that cheap you have no excuse but to go really. So go we did. Being sensible souls we booked our room in advance. That's right room, singular. At one point we were looking for who needed doubles; who could share; who snored; who shouted in their sleep and so forth but ended up deciding ...

The REAL Ireland

Advantages: Leprechauns, guinness, arse, feck, drink, girls
Disadvantages: Crime, violence, poverty, racism, sectarianism

...drink whiskey, obviously. 4. Dublin is a friendly, quaint little city Dublin is great. The citizens of Dublin would never exude irrational hatred of poverty-stricken immigrants and asylum-seekers from war-torn Eastern European countries. Neither do they have a superior nature towards the rest of the country. The city has no crime whatsoever and the police are not corrupt and run by Mafia-esque gangs. 5. Ireland is stuck in the 1930s Maybe you ...
...Lughnasa'. Whaddayamean no? Anyway, while this film is set in the 1930s, it was just filmed in Wicklow where people have cannot afford newer cars, the roads are dust tracks and electricity is seen as modern accessory for the idle rich. The pattern is repeated all over the country. 6. There is no town drunk While the media constantly create loveable town drunkards, similar to the English concept of the village idiot, this is clearly an unreal concept ...

Dublin, The Home Of The Black Stuff

Advantages: Great Party Atmospere, Great Guinness, Great Time
Disadvantages: Not for Your "Horlicks, Pipe and Sliper folk

...know the track...it starts off...In Dublin Fair City... It was no wonder that for my 20th wedding anaversery last May, i invited two friends of ours to share it with us and make a week-end of it. So...we booked for a two night stay in Dublin Got the flight from Blackpool for about £20.00 each and booked into the Temple Bar hotel on Temple Bar (which is a well known, popular Dublin area) Heard a lot about the place, but to be honest on the way ...
...so much sence....I was in Dublin fair city...Let the party begin. If you are one for the odd tipple at crimbo and think two glasses is enough for anyone....Stay at home with your Horlicks, because this is the party city. Night club junk and Techno dont exist...this is the city where the fiddle is all you need to waken the dead. Every bar is alive with the sound of Dublin and there is an old Dubliner singing in most of them. The city does tend to ...

IN DUBLIN'S FAIR CITY

Advantages: A wonderful City
Disadvantages: None that I can think of.

...We decided to visit Dublin for a few days. We were going to Israel via Amsterdam and in those days it was cheaper to fly from Amsterdam to Dublin than it was from London. We flew on Aer Lingus for a little over an hour. Dublin is the capital city of Erin, (the Gaelic name of Ireland). The currency then was the punt or the Irish pound,(they use the Euro now). The official language is Gaelic but English is used as well. Dublin’s population is just ...
...There are 4 Synagogues in Dublin and we choose to attend Saturday morning services at the Jewish Home of Ireland on Leinster Road. We took a tour and the first place we visited the famous Christ Church Cathedral. This is a beautiful Cathedral near the Wood Quay. Our next stop was at the Quay to visit Dublinia to see the display of artifacts of the Vikings and the recreation of the original city. The next stop was to see Dublin Castle. It was magnificent. There ...

Changing Times

Advantages: Small, lots to see
Disadvantages: The crime

...18 months since I visited Dublin and this is a very fast changing city, so some things may by now be completely different. Having said that, given that attractions like the Book of Kells have lasted about 800 years, I don't think a few months here or there will make that much difference. My first impressions of Dublin on arrival were that it was both a lot smaller and a lot busier than I had expected. This is a boom town: thanks largely to the peace ...
...which the world-famous Trinity College Dublin is my personal favourite. This is an elegant university with beautiful and peaceful grounds, surrounded by imposing but gracious buildings. History fans will appreciate both the fact that literary luminaries like Pepys studied here, and the superb exhibition that houses the Book of Kells, an ancient copy of the bible dating from early Celtish times that has somehow survived intact, foiling the best attempts ...

Dublin Weekends

Advantages: Low cost travel there, friendly, party city, speak English
Disadvantages: Sat. night taxis!

Having visited Dublin about 10 times in the last year ( to see my gorgeous girlfriend) I guess I'm suitably qualified to advise on a Dublin weekend by now. 1. Travel> Boat Unless you live close to Holyhead, get on a plane to Ireland. I have been by boat twice and the cost for one person (sometimes 2 or 3)is more than the plane. Boats take between 1.5-3 hours depending on which one you take. I think Irish Ferries and Stena operate the services, ...
...Travel >Flights Flights to Dublin are my fave option. From Leeds, where I fly, you can go by 1. British European 2. Aer Lingus 3. Ryanair 1&2 are targeted towards the business traveller. Ryanair fly to nearly every airport in mainland UK. www.ryanair.com and for the 40 min flight are worth every penny. The best bargains sometimes come to those who wait. It's worth waiting 2-4 weeks before you book, or look out for tokens in the Sun / Mirror ...

City of Green

Advantages: Lots to do, lots of culture.
Disadvantages: None

...just a short hop to Dublin for a few days. I couldn’t help but watch the ever-changing wing shape with intensity throughout the flight. After a quick pop above the clouds we touched down at Dublin International Airport. First impression of the city, lying in the sweep of Dublin Bay, was the wide River Liffey dividing it into a north and south half. It struck me how architecturally minded Dublin is with its huge Georgian-style buildings from ...
...landmarks - the National Gallery, Dublin Castle and the Guinness Storehouse wonderfully commentated on by friendly singing Irish bus drivers. A browse up Grafton Street – the principal street of shopping - is recommended. A street full of atmosphere especially when there is a busker playing a talented rendition of a Joe Satriani song (‘Tears In the Rain’ for any fans out there). I really wanted to jump up and down to make people ...

A Top Irish Day too you

Advantages: The people! The Guinness and the beautiful city.
Disadvantages: May be ruined by too many rude tourists

I was last in Dublin in December just before Chirstmas. I hadn't been to Dublin for a few years until then. So When I got there I was surprised and wowed by how much it had changed and by how much it had stayed the same! It seems Dublin has only got better, its the best City in the world to shop outside New York. The people are the most freindly bunch of people in the world. And the cold fresh sea air that blows in from the irish sea is just perfect ...
...And I went away too Dublin for 4 days. So what too do if your not into shopping? Best thing in Dublin is the Nigtlife! Go out with a friend or two and you will meet the most amazing people as you stagger from irish pub too irish pub, forget the clubs, stick too the bars as there far more entertaining. Everyone wants too be your friend.. Maybe its the magic of the Black Stuff, but its great.. Your night musn't end until at least 4am when the last ...

Irish Stew...

Advantages: Scenery,friendly people
Disadvantages: Nothing for children (sorry i forgot, there is a swing!)

I went to Dublin for the first time last year to attend my brother and sister-in-laws wedding. My wife and I took my two under 5's with us who where really excited about going on a ferry for the first time. We stayed in a town near Dublin called Dun Laoghaire (pronounced dun leary!)as it was a ferry port and close to the Royal Marine Hotel where they were holding the reception. Dun Laoghaire was much like any typical english town (apart from it ...
...wedding and even had the Dublin county choir there, it was fantastic to be there as it was very different from any wedding I've ever attended. I had a bit of a problem as my wife was a bridesmaid and this left me looking after the kids at the back of the church (helped by my other sister-in-law) and being small children they didn't want to keep still or quite. We came to the conclusion that we'd save the wedding and take the kids to the pub across ...

Gay Dublin

Advantages: Friendly, Lots of choice
Disadvantages: Quality of gay accommodation- try out an ordinary hotel to use as a base!

Ireland and in particular Dublin is changing. No more the backward reserved country it once was it now has some of the best Gay facilities and attractions of anywhere in the UK. Staying In Dublin Dublin has three main gay guest houses. Frankies, The Horse and Carriage and The Inn on the Liffey. All are small and it has to be said not up to the standard of the prices they charge. On the plus side all are central and within easy walking distance ...
...be forced to make a recommendation I would go for Frankies- the cleanest and most friendly of them all. On the plus side for the other two they do have sauna clubs attached, though The Horse and Carriage's sauna could do with a real clean-up. Pubs and Clubs The main gay bar is the George on Dame Street and is really made up of two parts. There is the quieter side (Affectionally known as 'jurassic park') and the club side. Well worth a visit especially ...

In Dublins fair city

Advantages: Plenty to do in friendly surroundings
Disadvantages: Can be expensive

...during the day, remember that Dublin is right by the sea. If you head towards Black Rock from Dublin City Centre you will pass by The Strand...here is the sea and when the tide is out you can walk out miles! If you're into doing something relaxing and are feeling energetic do go here...it's very calming. But watch out for the tide - it comes in really fast and if you're not careful and not keeping your wits about you you'll find yourself being surrounded ...

Advantages: It's a great city.
Disadvantages: People who visit come to see what isn't actually here.

...the top deck of a Dublin Bus. For me, a short, red-haired, freckled Irish girl with an extremely strong Irish accent, I'm the stuff most Americans dream of and considering the other members of the bus were either internationals talking on their phones, business people hidden deep in coats or else students like myself but were lucky enough to be taller and have blonde/brown/black hair, I was perfect for them to talk about. They were of course Americans ...

I must return

Advantages: Laid back, great shopping, plenty to do and see
Disadvantages: None

I have been to Dublin twice in the past 6 years, on both ocassions I was only there for 4 short hours as I awaited my ferry back to England after fishing trips. Both visits were really to kill time but in the short time I was there I fell in love with the city and must return. I managed to explore a different part of this wonderful city each time and my lasting thought is that I really must make the time to go back to Ireland for a non fishing holiday ...
...to be very laid back, it was certainly busy, a lot of hustle and bustle but no one seemed in a hurry, there was no urgency about people. Those who I met were friendly and helpful. Shopping there was a dream, I spent a couple of hours perusing the various stores. I found the layout and atmosphere to be akin with Frankfurt in Germany with it's riverside cafes and bars, a very similar atmosphere. To be able to say I fell in love with the city after ...

Black Gold

Advantages: Guiness quality
Disadvantages: Rising price of a pint

...the pint one gets in Dublin is richer in flavour and velvetty thicker in texture than anything I've had in London. It is perfect with local oysters on the half shell. Or with Irish stew. Or the extraordinary cheeses of the emerald isle. Or even with rich chocolate desserts! The only problem: the Irish economy is growing at such phenomenal speed, you may pay a few more pence for your pint. But a little goes a longer way in Dublin! ...
