drinker's heaven

Advantages: pubs and bars stay open late and plenty of choice, can walk everwhere.
Disadvantages: very cold in winter, not much to do beyond the drinking

I visited Dublin at New Year. Whilst it was certainly a fun place to be it was very very cold. This meant that walking around outside was not much fun, so we ended up spending a large amount of time in pubs and bars of which there are plenty. If you like drinking then Dublin is the place to be as there are lots of really lively, friendly bars and the licensing hours means places stay open later. However on a cultural level there is less to see, its ...
...different than anything that we have here in the UK. The Guinness Museum is definitely worth seeing if only for the view from the bar at the top but other than that there is nothing more of real interest. I imagine it would be a nicer in the summer for a long weekend as its a nice relaxed atmosphere but I think after 3 days it might be better to explore some of the rural regions of Ireland which certainly are very beautiful. I would recommend that ...

Blooms Day in Dublin

Advantages: Great day out
Disadvantages: none that I can think of, except maybe check opening times before you arrive

...is the best time in Dublin and the summer season begins on June 16th - Blooms Day. Blooms Day commemorates the fictional protagonist of James Joyce's greatest story, Ulysses. Ulysses, according to Joyce, "is a little story of two nations as well as the story of a day." In fact, it is much more. Argued by many to be the most important book of the 20th century, it found the ground on which the modernist literary genre would stand. Every year a number ...
...a sometimes divided world. Dublin today is a very different place to the Dublin I grew up in during the 1970s and 80s. For one thing, there's a lot of money about. The last 15 years has witnessed a huge rise prosperity. With it has come a substantial rise in prices. Dublin is no longer a cheap place to hang out in for a few days. It can seem downright expensive compared to other European cities. Here's a couple of tips, however, which will hopefully ...

Love it

Advantages: The people & the pubs
Disadvantages: Not cheap

Dublin has a wonderful mix of the old, the attractively dingy and the interestingly modern. The atmosphere in the pubs is as warm as all the old cliches hint at. Dubliners are friendly and opinionated - helped along by a good few pints of the fabulous creamy Guinness, a quick visit to a pub turns into a long memorable night! AVoid the centre and it's burger bars and skirt round the edges for some local colour. If you're on a tight budget or want ...

World's Most Overrated City

Advantages: The pubs, the people
Disadvantages: Just about everything else

...honest, the only part of Dublin which really won my heart over was the area near Donnybrook, where there were some genuine pubs, a nice rugby ground and real people. The rest is a tourist-infested, crime-ridden, and yes, overrated shambles. As I say, Dublin is mainly popular because it's in Ireland and the Irish (to their immense credit because they've succeeded where so many have failed) have marketed themselves better than for example, the Germans ...
...sent 100 people to Dublin and say, Munich, 90 would say Munich is a nicer place. It's amazing what reputations and marketing can do. For me, Dublin is to world travel what McDonald's is to world cuisine, successful but because it has been pushed cleverly. I feel many people have gone to Dublin in a very 'positive' frame of mind, ready for the 'craic' and the Guinness etc, and are therefore more likely to have a good time. Fine - and I am glad people ...

Dublin experience

Advantages: easy to walk around
Disadvantages: traffic and pollution

We travelled to Dublin in May 2002, a suprise for my dad on his 60th Birthday. We flew by Ryanair who were cheap & cheerful (ryanair.com). Upon arrival @ Dublin Airport we purchased day bus tickets at the bus/rail info desk (approx £5 for a family ticket - which was cheaper than purchasing 2 separate adult tickets), then hopped onto the no.748 bus which takes you to guiness hopstore, or alternatively catch no.747 to go directly to Dublin City Centre. ...
...bus. Other attractions include Cathedral, Dublin Castle, Trinity College all of which have small admission charges. The Temple bar area is renound for its many bars, we choose to grab a snack and sit by the Liffey River, there are promenades with lots of seating set back a bit from the road where you can enjoy a lovely view along the river. Dublin is full of shops everywhere so if like me you are a shopaholic, take your credit card!. ...

beejesus what a holiday!!

Advantages: shop til you drop!
Disadvantages: you can drop quite easily if you're unfit!!!

Going with my mother, thinking it would be a bad idea actually turned out interesting!! she turned out to be a right old laugh!! partying the night away in the bars which are open until about 3am and the nightclubs which open until about 6am! she had lots of men to choose from as their were stag nights and lushious irish men all over the place!!! who, in my opinion are the nicest men on earth! If you're going for a girly holiday or even a hen night, ...
...On the other hand during the day it's definately the place to go shopping and with the choice you get its amazing, ooh and if you get tired ( which you probably will!) you definatly have to go into one of the traditional irish bars and taste that GORGEOUS home brewed guiness, it tastes nothing like the watered down rubbish we get in england!! We went in june and the weather was up and down really so its probably best to go in the summertime. We stayed ...

Redublin your efforts to visit

Advantages: The craic, the beer, the vibrancy, loads to do
Disadvantages: Can be exhausting!

Although I live here and my opinion is probably biased, you should visit here as soon as possible if you haven't already done so. Hundreds of tourists and visitors that I've spoken to over the years have confirmed this - apparently we're really friendly, and good fun abounds, especially if you like a pint or too. The nightscene has improved greatly recently, with funky new pubs opening all the time (check out Zanzibar, Fireworks and Pravda if you ...
...traditionalist and like really good beer and banter, then go to Mulligan's, Sean O'Casey's and The Stag's Head - all in the City Centre.) People bend over backwards and you'll often see locals compete with each other to give the best directions!!! If you've any specific questions, just mail me on damianmcevoy@hotmail.com, and I'll only be too pleased to help. ...

Guinness Storehouse Dublin

Advantages: Fantastic View
Disadvantages: Cold

...at all the lights over Dublin until 10pm! It is extremely informative, I never knew you could make a whole museum so interesting based on one drink. Not sure if it is deliberate but the smell of the brewing process while you are making your way up the levels makes that free pint you know is waiting for you at the top taste like the best pint you've ever had! ...

Join the Spirit, Get a Guinness

Advantages: Beautiful view of Dublin from the Gravity Bar combined with a free pint makes a killer formula.
Disadvantages: Ok, it is hard to find anything that is really bad about this place, except maybe the 20 min walk from the centre

having heard that the Guinness Storehouse is Ireland's number one visitor attraction we booked our visit online at www.guinness-storehouse.com before we left which allowed us to pick up our tickets from the customer service desk and progress through fastrack entry! We certainly weren't disappointed by our visit. Floor by floor you're taken on a fascinating journey through the past, present and future of Guinness and with seven floors in all there ...
