Durham Cathedral - Britain's Best-Loved Building!

Advantages: A beautiful place to visit
Disadvantages: None

...I am talking about is Durham Cathedral, built high on a peninsula of land, created by a loop in the River Wear, it can be seen from miles around. I remember from childhood, when being away from the north-east on holiday or a day trip, returning home up the A1 I would look for Durham Cathedral, and when spotting it in the distance, know I would soon be 'home'. I still think that way to this day! One of my favourite views of the cathedral is at sunset, ...
...breath-taking. Bill Bryson described Durham Cathedral as 'the best Cathedral on planet Earth, a sentiment which has been echoed by many people from all over the world. It was also voted Britain's best-loved building in a nationwide BBC poll. It is popular not only for it's architecture, but also for it's amazing setting which I mentioned above. Far better landmark than the Angel of the North in my opinion! Durham cathedral has also became very popular ...

Spent 2 days that I won't forget

Advantages: cheap, easy to go aroung, ideal for a short break
Disadvantages: NONE !

...Gardens, Oriental Museum, Houghall Gardens, Durham Cathedral, Durham Castle, Town. Well 3-4 days we decided with my b/f to take a short break from uni and visit a place near Newcastle. First we though going to Edinburgh but that would cost more than going to a nearer place. So we decided to go to Durham! I ordered Durham catalogues from the internet to research for accommodation, attractions and places that we could visit. After 2 days I got the ...
...way too. This was the Durham city, the centre! We didn't want to go to places far away from there. Friday Morning the 31st of March ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Packed with few clothes, water and sandwiches we left the house going to the train station. Got out tickets for £4.90 each from Newcastle to Durham. We arrived there after 10-15 minutes. It was 10:30am and we were going to get out room at 12pm. We didn't got a taxi to go but we walked. The ...

Visit Beamish Open Air Museum

Advantages: great family day out, living history
Disadvantages: it should not be raining when you go there

...the North of England, between Durham and Newcastle. (Note: I had to put this review into the Durham category, because Ciao do not like to add many new categories at the moment. They ask us instead to post it to the closest city/area category that is available) This museum has won a number of awards including Visitor Attraction of the Year 1997, British Museum of the Year 1986 and European Museum of the Year 1987. Beamish tries to show how people ...
...work in 1825 and in 1913. Some buildings were located here before and just have been restroed, and others have been taken from somewhere else and transported and rebuilt here. The whole area is quite large and can be devided into four separate places, which I'd like to present to you in some more detail below. Transport between the various places is by the electric tramway (original trams from the 1900s) or using a replica bus (Daimler CC double-decker), ...

Land of The Prince Bishops

Advantages: The Castle, The Cathedral , The Building , Just about everything
Disadvantages: Nothing

...in no uncertain terms. Durham is a beautiful city, in County Durham just off the A1 , approached via the A690. It is also on the main east coast railway line so is easily accessible from London and Newcastle / Edinburgh in the north. I'm lucky enough to live in Newcastle, and so am a ten minute train journey away from Durham. Durham is a university city like Oxford and Cambridge , and suffers from the same narrow streets and parking problems, so ...
...The are many pubs in Durham , and most of these serve excellent food , and are reasonably priced. I must apologise for the vagueness of the op, but Durham is a great place to explore, and othere aren't any places you need to avoid. If you can , try spending a full day, or longer. It is a beautiful and enjoyable city. ...

A perfect little city

Advantages: Beautiful old town, good value for money
Disadvantages: Parking difficult

Bill Bryson described Durham as 'a perfect little city' - and he was dead right. The old city, consisting of arguably the most impressive cathedral in England, the castle, and winding, cobbled streets lined with old buildings is perched high above the river Wear and has views over the rest of the city and the countryside beyond. There are delightful walks along the river banks, fantastic at any time of year, and plenty of tea-rooms, bed and breakfasts ...
...the Market Square for directions. Durham is easy (and not too expensive) to get to by train on the East Coast main line, or by car from the A1. There are two smart hotels right in the centre of town: The Royal County and The Three Tuns. There is loads to do in the surrounding area as well - try day trips to Bishop Auckland, the stunning Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle and Newcastle upon Tyne. Durham has a rash of cheap Italian restaurants, as well as ...

Durham at its Best!

Advantages: The most beautiful Cathedral in North East England
Disadvantages: Cooler weather

Durham city has been a landmark in the North east for centuries. The cathedral which rises high above the city was built in C. 900 AD. It is the burial place of St Cuthbert and what a magnificant building it is. Also Durham has a castle, which is situated on Place Green near the Cathedral. There are many old streets which are cobbled to recreate the old feel of the ever evolving Durham. The river Wear funs through the city, and the wears in the river ...
...in the Market Place. Durham is nicely situated in the middle of the North East, only 20 miles away is Newcastle Upon Tyne, another great city for culture and night life. You can travel to Durham by train, bus, car. It is situated on the main line about 3 hours from london. If you come from the north by train then the views over the bridge as you enter the city are absolutely breathtaking. You can arrange tours around the city you can enquire at ...
