A (two) DAY TRIPPER'S GUIDE TO EDINBURGH

Advantages: So Much to See and Do. Something for everyone.
Disadvantages: It took me six months to write about it! Not a cheap family destination.

...from our actual experiences of Edinburgh itself. It is all too easy to become carried away in great company and to see the gloss rather than the reality of the place that you have come to see. Without naming names, I dedicate this review to the pair of them, for aiding my wife and I with our most enjoyable excursion of 2006. RICHADA’S PREVIOUS EDINBURGH EXPERIENCES In all honesty, had it not been for my Polish wife, Adrianna, wishing to see Edinburgh, ...
...ones. I have visited Edinburgh on two previous occasions, back in the 1990’s – again as a day tripper. Both times - firstly in July, then in October - the weather had been grey and cold, leaving me with a rather grim impression of this being a grey city under an even more grey sky. On the first occasion I parked the car for a day in a multi-storey car park, walked my feet off around this very hilly city and then could not find it again. No, not ...

Livin' in the Burgh

Advantages: Lots to do, lots of places to eat, gorgeous city, love the nightlife
Disadvantages: Good old Scottish weather I suppose and I do dislike the busyness of city life

...made up my mind that Edinburgh university was my first choice university. Three years later, whilst I might have been a little disillusioned about university life I certainly wasn't disillusioned about Edinburgh... '''*~It's like Sim City up here!~*''' So in the current economic climate you may possibly want to stick about in Old Blighty as the value of the pound is enough to make you sick. I do suggest a trip to Edinburgh should you decide to stay. ...
...up with a little inconvenience, Edinburgh is still architecturally gorgeous and the best sites tend to be scaffold free. I write this after spending a day waltzing around in the sunshine. I love grand architecture of the old buildings and the fact that the Old Town, particularly that surrounding the Royal Mile, retains the layout of bygone years. The Royal Mile is the prime tourist street that runs all the way up hill to the Castle. It's quaintly ...

Edinburgh - it Stinks

Advantages: Lots to see and do, the city contains some stunning buildings
Disadvantages: The roadworks, the tramworks, the bagpipes!

I have been living in Edinburgh now for almost five years, and in that time I have gone from loving the place to desperately wanting to leave. I am, however, marooned here for the foreseeable future, due to a combination of factors, the most obvious one being sheer bad luck. We moved to Edinburgh from London for several reasons, the main one being my husband was working in the city at the time. Our daughter was due to leave her special school and ...
...For several years Edinburgh had been portrayed as the best place to live for quality of life, and my husband, having worked in the city in the past, was ready for a change – so we made the decision to move 400 miles north. ==So what’s right with Edinburgh?== The thing that always impresses the visitor to Edinburgh is the architecture and the history. Taking a walk in the Old Town is fascinating as you imagine how things were hundreds of years ago, ...

An A-Z Guide to Edinburgh

Advantages: It's beautiful. It has a castle! It's very centralised
Disadvantages: The weather (occasionally) and can be expensive

...could ever cover everything about Edinburgh (I could easily do 10,000 words, but I’ll take words off for good behaviour!), so I don’t mind missing some stuff out. This is very much a personal guide to this wonderful, cosmopolitan city of culture and commerce. A is for - ARTHUR’S SEAT. You have to visit here for one reason - THAT view! Arthur’s Seat is an extinct volcano and it’s distinctive shape can be seen from many ...
...C is for CASTLES Edinburgh Castle is rightly famous - it just looks so impressive! I mean, there you are on Princes Street, right in the middle of town, shops on one side, castle looming over you on the other! I haven’t been there for years but my wife, Anne, took the kids there in May and found it very interesting. Joshua (6) and Nathan (31/2) were suitably entertained for several hours! It cost £7.50 for adults and £2 for kids (under five’s ...

Edinburgh - The Athens Of The North

Advantages: Beautiful and Historical City
Disadvantages: COLD and WINDY (even in Summer)

...title, which is well deserved. Edinburgh is indeed an exceptionally beautiful city, situated at the mouth of the “Firth of Forth”, its city centre dominated by the huge, old Castle, sitting on the Castle Rock, and permanently looking out over the town and its inhabitants like an eternal sentry. Then there is “Arthur’s Seat”, the extinct volcano, situated right in the middle of Holyrood park, and dominating even Holyrood ...
...~ The main street of Edinburgh is Princes Street. About a mile in length, it is also the main shopping thoroughfare, and all tastes are catered for, from small souvenir shops to large department stores. Princes Street is a gem of a street in which to shop or walk, as it has shops and buildings on one side of the street only. In recent years, traffic is only allowed access down one side of the street, and this has the effect of making the environment ...

Stockbridge, the best Edinburgh detour

Advantages: Great atmosphere, shops, bars, restaurants
Disadvantages: Visitors often overlook it

The population of Edinburgh swells this time of year as the multitudes descend upon the city to enjoy the wealth of art, music and theatre on offer. Sadly, a great many people never manage to get past George Street in their travels, thus missing out on one of the best neighborhoods in town. I have lived in Stockbridge for over three years, and my affection for the place increases every day. If you're in Edinburgh for any length of time, whether ...
...The Floatarium- Another Edinburgh institution. You can stock up on crystals and potions while booking an appointment for a aromatherapy massage, range of beauty treatments, or a "float"- suspended animation in a special tank for total chill-out. Highly recommended- the staff are nice and you'll feel great afterwards. PUBS Although there are a few places which deserve mention, there's one place which I know and love above all others. The Baillie ...

Deconstructing Edinburgh

Advantages: Cosmopolitan atmosphere, loads of culture, loads of pubs.
Disadvantages: Not a lot of big live music venues, Prince's Street's layout can be annoying if you're in a hurry.

...sure where to begin. Edinburgh is a beautiful city, so much so that if you're a resident you kinda take it for granted. Edinburgh is a city of layers, one that, as it's expanded, has carefully preserved the past alongside the present. The town itself boasts three universities, and several art galleries and theatres. This helps create a fairly cosmopolitan atmosphere, with people from all over the world coming not just to visit, but to study, and ...
...leave. The only downside to Edinburgh is that Princes Street lines all the shops side by side. This means you quite often have to walk from one end to another and back again to browse before shopping. Glasgow is possibly better designed for someone just interested in shopping. Heading down the Royal mile, there are a myriad of small shops selling gifts and goods. Whilst the occasional shop is guilty of selling "tartan tat", there are a lot of good ...

...unfriendly. And if you're in Edinburgh City, you're bound to meet one or two people who fit the description. However, leaving the people aside for the moment, let's talk about what's on offer to visitors. Princes street offers a huge range of shops, restaurants and bars, but for cheaper options, cross one of the bridges, and browse the streets just off the Royal Mile. Booklovers should be sure to make a stop at the immensely fabulous, and simply ...

Go for the headphones, rather than the tour guide. You can go at your own pace, and repeat things that way. There are tons of exhibitions, galleries, street performers and tourist walks in Edinburgh - but the best time to go is during the Festival. There's an abundance of interesting talented people ...

EDINBURGH ROCKS

Advantages: Wonderful city, steeped in history.
Disadvantages: not wheelchair friendly

...the capital city of Scotland. Edinburgh became Scotland’s capital city following the d eath of James I, king of Scotland, at Perth (the former capital). The city is twinned with eight other cities including: Dunedin, Florence, Kiev, and Nice. The north of the district is known as ‘the new town’. The new town brags the largest Georgian architecture in Europe and possibly the world. Prince’s street gardens separate the new ...
...early 19th century! Edinburgh is the second most populous in Scotland-following Glasgow. Edinburgh id basically built on a group of hills, so not very wheelchair friendly in that sense – but a city well worth a visit. The city and its surrounds cover an area of around 260 sq km. The climate is commonly cloudy with moderate rainfall (as we all know). The population of Edinburgh is around 450,000, which in turn represents about 8-9% of Scotland ...

Edinburgh: Shopper's Delight

Advantages: You can reach any corner of Edinburgh within half hour of bus ride.
Disadvantages: Roads are not as buggy friendly as in London

...heavily when we arrived in Edinburgh after a gruesome night journey on mega bus. Before moving further, my advice to young and old alike is that plan your trip in advance and opt for cheap easy jet deals than bus travel. Buses are totally medieval in form and seats. Even in India we got a better deal when we went from Bangalore to Ootty. At least seats could be pushed backwards and there was space to stretch legs. What to see: Anyways, after arriving ...

...the UK, one visit to Edinburgh was enough to change my mind. The history, the people, the overall feel of the place… you just can't beat it. [Though before you read any further, I should warn you: I'm a little biased. Although the £7 entry fee put me off actually going inside it for a while, I'm very glad I did. ...bus to the city's heart, Edinburgh is best seen first as you step off the train at Waverley station. Once you step outside the station, you have before you one of the most spectacularly sited capitals in Europe. It's not called the Athens for nothing. The only other thing to be careful of is the first Hearts-Hibs football meeting of the season (usually in August or September) - it can get hairy and there will be a large police presence in places like the Lothian Road. At other times trouble is rare and tends to be confined to areas where tourists simply don't go. I could go on and on... and I'm looking forward to going back to ...

Capital of Scotland

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...Scotland (the largest is Glasgow), Edinburgh is the Capital city. Although quite tranquil compared to other Capital Cities, Edinburgh is a place that has a lot going for it. The city skyline is dominated by the Castle which sits high on a hill in the Centre of town. I will not dwell ...
...will say though is that Edinburgh can compete with any other city when it comes to the range of attractions. The recent opening of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh has led to a great deal of interest in the city and has given the whole place a major lift. A beautiful city

Advantages: Beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: Can be cold in winter

Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland. What makes it different to London, which is the capital city of England is the fact that it is not so busy and people have time for each other. People do not rush past you. I visited Edinburgh last January. It was a beautiful place for a short four day visit. I spent three days in Edinburgh itself and on the remaining day, I took a day tour to Loch Lomond. Edinburgh is not a very big city, however it has ...

Bonny Edinburgh

Advantages: cheap, beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: quite busy

...like top go up to Edinburgh every year. We have a timeshare about 2 minutes walk away from Princes Street and a little nearer to George Street. The shopping on Princes Street is amazing. They have the biggest Marks And Spencers I have seen anywhere. As you walk along Princes Street there are breathtaking views of Edinburgh Castle which is where the military Tattoo is held. The last time I went up to Edinburgh was in June and the weather was wonderful. ...
...best place to eat in Edinburgh is a restaurant called the Mussel Inn, which, as the name suggests serves mussels and a small selection of other seafood. 99% of customers choose mussels and chips as there food.
