Advantages: Very friendly locals, great sightseeing and unspoilt beaches Disadvantages: Lots of developing going on, a bit complicated to get there
...stay in a hotel near Famagusta and right next to the ruins of the ancient town Salamis. A few weeks later it was time to pack my bags - little did I know that I would soon be packing much more, as I moved to Northern Cyprus less then a year from then on.
The journey wasn't quite as straightforward, as it would have been to the recognized official Cyprus and was only the first hindsight that this part of the world indeed is still very affected from ... ...The journey from Ercan to Famagusta takes about 40 minutes if being fetched by a hotel-owned bus or self-drive. If taken in a Taxi could be much less, thanks to the ruthless driving methods of the locals.

Famagusta was a short drive away and is good for shopping and such things as Turkish Delight.
One of the things I always look for in Turkish areas is a water pipe cafe so that i can enjoy the the fruit tobacco smokes which take about an hour. Usually you take apple tea of coffee with it and maybe play a game of backgammon.
In Famagusta I found Nargile'ci which is on the right after the university coming in from ... ...Across the road is a side road which if you go 200m and turn left you come to Ali Babas restaurant, he speaks little English but manages to provide all that you need at around £5.00 a head including drinks.
In Bogaz the other direction from Salamis you can find the speedboat or Dudleys bar, this is run by one of the guitarists from Nashville Teens a sixties group, good food and conversation there.

...of their tours to visit famagusta which translates roughly to mean "ghost town". As we hired a car anyway with the island being so small we decided to do the trip on our own. How relieved we were that we hadn't forked out our spending money on this trip! As emotional and full of history as this place actually is due to the fact that the part of the island is still under Turkish occupation you can not actually get into the town itself. Views are only ... ...and bars, well away from the actual area. The best views actually come from old photographs and artists impressions. It is worth a look at the historical data on the town but there is nothing physically to see despite what the reps may tell you! Be warned also it's not a trip for the children. ...

Advantages: good views Disadvantages: a ghost town
Famagusta is now a town that you cannot go to when you go to Southern Cyprus. You can go near it by boat but not get off the boat to see it.This boat trip costs £5 with free wine thrown in.
Yet it is well worth when in Cyprus going to a place where you can view this Ghost Town.
One of the best places for this is Dherynia. We took a bus there. Most buses stop for two hours so that you can take in the view.
In Dherynia there are a couple tea rooms ... ...the Turkish guard post. Famagusta used to be a thriving holiday centre now it is a ghost town with shell struck buildings and barren land. You will see the flag pole where a demonstrator Solomou was shot by the turks when he tried to take down the turkish flag. This is not ancient history but in our lifetime. European motorcyclists wanted to peacefully go around Cyprus. Cyprus is the only Country divided.

We visted Farmagusta while on holiday in Cyprus (Ayia Napa) as a 20 year old seeing something like this I didn't believe was going to be intersting - but trust me it was and it only took a morning. We booked with a local operator as you will find their prices a lot cheaper than those the tour operators. So we get up early and visit Farmagusta and the fact that there is no-one about apart from the UN headquarters is quite a sight. What u should realise ... ...the North and presumed they were going back and never took any of their belomgings with them. For me this trip was an eye opener, on the trip was my 9 year old brother and he also seemed quite fascinated about all.
There was nothing negative about this visit. ...
