    “There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going,” read the Thought for the Day in the Fiji Times. This at least gave me something to think about as my wife and I lounged by the pool at the Tanoa International Hotel just outside Nadi. Having travelled half-way around the world in just two days to be there, I was inclined to think that we had indeed taken a short cut. The first visitors to these shores from Europe took years over the journey, and suffered on the way.     Fiji. A small pocket of paradise in the South Pacific, which is breathtaking to even the most seasoned world citizen. The first thing to strike you as you set foot for the first time on their soil is the Fijian people who have a calm, happy and down to earth nature about them.     A great spot for a resort holiday or stopover. Very enjoyable. Despite the recent turmoil I believe that it would still be safe. Most of the drama was in Suva which is a couple of hours away from Nadi Airport and the islands. I took a 10 day trip to Fiji and stayed at the Sheraton Fiji Resort which is located on Denaru Island just outside of Nadi. It is actually part of the main island but entering the Sheraton resort is like entering a different world.     fiji is everything you would imagine tropical paradise to be, lush palm fringed beaches surrounded by turquoise waters...... i arrived in fiji in the early hours of the morning, so my first impression was the sudden hot, humid environment that hit me as i left the air conditioned airport buildings, quite a change from the wintery weather i had left behind.     Fiji is a beautiful experience not to be forgotten! On arrival the warm weather was a joy coming from the somewhat mixed bag of New Zealands winter. We (I joined forces with another girl backpacking) were introduced to what the locals call 'Fiji time' right from the onset as our pick up for the hostel we were staying at was a bit late getting us from the airport. But the friendliness and warmth of the people kinda makes that pale into insignificance.     Disadvantages Disadvantages The flight to get there and the latest government coup.

    'Bula' is the local meaning for 'Hello', and when you get to Fiji, you will greeted by the saying so many times that you will pick up the habit. Fiji is a small island located in the Pacific Ocean, not very far away from New Zealand and Australia, and exports some great Rugby players. Unfortunately with all the problems within the country at the moment, it's not entirely safe to wander off by yourself.     Octopus is consistantly rated as one of the best budget resorts in Fiji, and it's not hard to see why. Our beachfront bure (pronounced like puree) was lovely, traditionally built with a bathroom where the shower had no roof! It was very comfortable, and we didn't mind the resident lizards at all, because they ate the mosquitos! We had our own private hammock, big enough for two, strung between two palm trees, and at night we slept under a mossie net to the sound of the waves.     My wife and I honeymooned on Castaway Island in Fiji during March 1999. Despite the on-going problems in the country now, I hope that when things are safer to return we will be able to return to this wonderful South Sea paradise. With all of the fantastic scenery and the fab food my lasting memeory is of the Fijian people and their kind and gentle nature. Our time in Fiji was a very special experience that I would recommend to anyone traveling to the area. When visiting the islands there is very little to do other than relax.     I spent 3 weeks in Fiji and its islands, one of the first things I did was spent a few days diving... Wow, diving was fantastic, drift dives, and shallow dives were the main types available. These were organised by Aqua trek on the south side of the isalnd based at the hotel I stayed in for a while.... Suva the Fijian capital was a breath of fresh air, even though it was raining. The different culture was brilliant.
