Advantages: Open jaw tickets, good pricing policy, good route network. Disadvantages: none
...a look around and flew Finnair instead. I paid out €335, which was somewhat embarrassing for my boss who had shelled out the €850 and whose flights were both delayed, whilst I arrived on time both coming and going. As well as the price advantage, there was another motive - it meant that I could accumulate points on my British Airways frequent flyer card, as Finnair is part of the OneWorld alliance (and get points on my Miles and More card from my ... ...Helsinki does not appeal when Finnair fly between the two. One of the appeals of flying with them is that they have a blue sky approach to ticket pricing - their prices do not increase on flights between 60 days and 3 days before the flight goes and they also believe that off-peak flights should be cheaper. Add this to the fact that Internet bookings (from Austria at least) only have an €8 service fee - most airlines are closer to €20 and you can ...

Advantages: Punctual airline, friendly staff, reasonable leg room Disadvantages: Too short connection times, entertainment
I recently flew with Finnair from Hong Kong to Helsinki and then caught a connecting flight on to Manchester. I checked in for the first leg whilst in Sydney (where I originally started from and flew to Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific - see other review!) but they would not let me check in for the Manchester leg. This caused a few problems as there was only 55 minutes between being scheduled to land and take-off on the next flight. Having landed in ... ...the luggage problem I found Finnair to be a fantastic airline. We were fed a lovely lunch of pork, rice, salad, vegetables, bread and an ice-cream. It was really good food with a lot of taste that you don't always get on flights but there was no choice of anything else if you don't like pork so if you are a fussy eater it is probably a good idea to tell them about any dislikes before boarding the plane. On the short flight from Helsinki to Manchester ...

Advantages: New aircraft with on demand entertainment Disadvantages: A stop in Helsinki for long haul trips
I'd never flown with Finnair before, but recently they've been strongly advertising their fares to Asia and they are actually cheaper most of the time than other airlines. The only disadvantage is that you have to stop off in Helsinki, but that's fine with me if the airline is decent and it saves me some money. My trip took me from Amsterdam to Seoul and back.

Booking
======
With Finnair being a major scheduled airline you can find them on all the usual online booking sites and they can of course be booked via a travel agent. I found that the cheapest way to book with them was directly via their website (this is not always the case with scheduled airlines). The booking process was simple enough. You get a decent baggage allowance (20kg) for no extra charge.

Advantages: Value for money, efficient service, good route network Disadvantages: (In economy): No seat back TV, no food options
Before I first flew Finnair I had heard mixed things about it, with the general consensus being that it was great in business class and not so great in economy.
Well, I can only vouch for economy but I have to say I thought the experience a good one. I flew from Singapore to Helsinki via Bangkok in May 2006 as part of a ticket taking me from Brisbane to London. I actually chose Finnair because I wanted a few days stopover in both Singapore and Helsinki ... ...crew. The major problem with Finnair is that it's product and aircraft are a bit outdated. Finnair flies its long haul routes with MD-11s, which are slightly noisier than newer wide body aircraft. Also the seat backs have no TV in them, which is standard on most long haul airlines these days. However, as the flight was overnight I wanted to sleep anyway so I didn't mind too much about the little TVs. Those travelling with children might want to think ...

Came back from a years trip around SE Asia last December 2000. Having got used to the excellent service in the region I was very disappointed by Finnair.
The staff on board were very grumpy and treated the passengers like sheep. I know that "airfood" is usually not that good, but with this airline I was not given any choice, but to eat a cold chicken type thing at 3am then later on an "icelandic cod" was on offer (yum yum). With other airlines you ... ...cups of water or orange juice around every hour or so they would never come back to collect the empties. As I'm never the sort of guy who chucks things on the floor I had to get up and give my empty cup back to one of the cabin crew on a trip to the toilet. Yes I know I could have pressed the small button on the seat to alert my presence, but could you imagine everyone on the plane doing that.
The two films they showed were out of date and hardly ...
