The whole event is one of the occasions when a large percentage of the richest people in the world get together for one long party. Of course the race is important or is it? I was at Monaco last year with the team that I work for and it certainly was an eye opener. There is nothing like it after the sterile circuits that get visited all year. There are massive logistical problems for teams and personnel, last year I walked to work and back everyday, it took the same time to walk as it did to ride in the mini bus but the surroundings are astounding. This circuit has really had its time. In the modern arena of F1 racing we need proper racing circuits to give a decent race. There are problems with F1 in general, but circuits like Monaco do not help. There is no room to pass and it becomes even more of a procession than usual. My experience of the Monaco circuit is based on racing around on Sony Playstation F1 games. In this context it is fun, fast and enjoyable. Also it is like no other F1 circuit, in that it uses the narrow streets of the French prinipality, including a long curved tunnel which leads out onto the harbour, where millionaires park (or is it moor?) their yachts. Unfortunately, in my other guise as F1 enthusiast, it can often make for a very poor viewing ...

I don't know if it is the sharp corners or the history of the circuit but there is always a buzz when F1 goes there. You've got to have been there to appreciate the brilliance of the Monaco Grand Prix. With one of the organised motor racing tours we managed to get out there for about £200 which included a night in a hotel and a ticket to the race. Next to the harbour there was a general admission (cheap tickets) area where you could stand about 3 metres from the cars as they hurtle past. Anyone that's been to Monaco will mention the sound of the cars going round, ...
...out of sight, and then they come into view and wow! The thrill of Monaco is that everything is so close, you can really appreciate the speed and skill of the drivers. I shouldn't really use the word luckily but often if the drivers retire you can meet them walking back - I got to shake hands with David Coulthard when he retired coming out of the tunnel. If you're a real fan of the sport it's well worth looking into, I went with Page & Moy. Coach ...
