Unlike most people arriving at Kevlavik airport, instead of following route 41 straight into the capital, we turned onto route 1, the only long-distance road in the country and kept on going. Hugging the western coast we headed north, through the three-and-a-half-mile Hvalfördur tunnel, and alongside the Borgafjördur before turning off towards the hamlet of Reykholt.
