    Calling Frankfurt Mainhattan is the same as calling some stinking canals Little Venice or a range of mounds a bit higher than a molehill Switzerland. Everything is relative, as no other German city has more high-rise buildings than Frankfurt (which has 50 in the centre) and the city lies on the banks of the river Main, Mainhattan it is. What do people associate with Frankfurt? Most can only come up with the international airport and banks (they own most of the high-rise buildings), some may be able to add Stock Exchange and City of the Euro which goes in the same direction.     Advantages Advantages "Restaurants: unhurried, relaxing, inexpensive, historical, even medievial" .... "Where?" ... "In Frankfurt am Main." .... "Never ! who do you take me for, save your stupid jokes for someone else !"

    Disadvantages Disadvantages "Are you kidding? This can`t be !... Frankfurt is a financial center, trade fare, traffic focus, airport and business place. Nix da medievial !! "

    Frankfurt am Main (660.000 inhabitants) is not known for being a definite tourist attraction like Vienna or Munich. Frankfurt is often regarded in Germany only as a business centre and transit focus. It could be more for the visitior: e.g. modern playful architecture, history, museums, art, festivals and cultural events. The "expensive" reputation of Frankfurt one can get just on first sight. Because of the big events with thousands of people attending like "Museums-Ufer-Fest" with a 0,2 l coke costing more than 3.00 Euro. But there we won't go ...     Frankfurt has about 650.000 inhabitants and is the fifth biggest city of Germany. You probably arrive at the airport which is the second largest –behind Heathrow- of Europe. Many people say that the city of Frankfurt is somewhere in the suburbs of the airport. Enough said? Maybe, nevertheless I will continue. From the airport, trains (S8 and S9, direction Offenbach or Hanau) take you in about 15 minutes to the city of Frankfurt. Get out at Hauptwache and you are in the very city centre.     So, this is my first ever opinion on ciao.uk - I hope you'll forgive me any mistakes, my English is just a tad rusty... Seeing as I live in Frankfurt and was born close by, I thinks it's only fair that I write something nice about it ;-). *Arrival* When you arrive at Frankfurt, you'll most probably hit the Main Train Station at one point or another. And --- this, I admit, is not the best place to detect the city's charme. Around the train station (Hauptbahnhof) is the red-light-district, so watch out for pick-pockets and don't get put out by any drug-addicts you might see. They are there, but ... more

    Well I am living in Germany and in the Frankfurt area. Therefore I know the Frankfurt area quite well. When you see the ever growing Frankfurt airport you realized that Frankfurt is a city always on the move. Frankfurt is located in a region called the Rhein-Main Area. Surrounded by citys nearby (within 45 Minutes) called Mainz, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt and Giessen, Frankfurt is really the heart of this region. Also a one hour drive away is the beautiful and historic city of Heidelburg.Quite near is also the Taunus and the Odenwald(`mountain`areas),that are really nice to see and of course the ... more

    I used to go to Frankfurt am Main all the time when I lived in Germany and it is the ugliest city I have been to. However, it does have its uses. For shopping it is good, there are several department stores around the town centre (around Hauptwache and on Zeil in particular) and plenty of expensive up-market shops can be found on Goethestrasse. It has a couple of 'original version' cinemas, where English films are shown undubbed.     Frankfurt am Main I lived in Frankfurt for just over 2 years. Long enough to enable me to tell you a bit about! Mainhattan and its skyscrapers This is the unofficial name for Frankfurt in Hessen with its ca. 630.000 inhabitants. It obviously refers to Manhattan being famous for its skyscrapers. Just like Frankfurt. And the Main is one of Germanys biggest river crossing Frankfurt. That is how the name was created.     Ok not exactly, but i live 5-10km from it in a city called "Bad Homburg", in the subvillage "Ober Eschbach", next to Ober Eschbach is the village "Nieder Eschbach", it already belongs to frankfurt! So you can imagine that i visit Frankfurt very often, for example for shopping. HISTORY: The name "Frankfurt" is because about 1000 years ago the "Franken" lived in this area of Germany, and because of the river "Main" they made a "furt", its a way trough the water, a bridge, made of stones or other stuff.     I was born in Germany and life very close to Frankfurt. Naturally I have visited it often. It is a quite big city with a very important role concerning the flight business in Europe. The Airport is huge and has two terminals. It isn't very easy to find your place around. In Germany Frankfurt is also called Mainhatten, because the river Rhein goes through Frankfurt. It has also a lot of high buildings just like in Manhatten. Der Messeturm is propably one of the most common buildings. Frankfurt also has a lovely church to visit. It is called The Römer.     Frankfurt is an ideal venue for a weekend away, there is plenty to do and see in this beautiful city. My time spent here was quite brief, 6 hours to be exact but what I saw of the city has prompted me to include it on my list of places to re-visit. Some of the architecture is quite breathtaking, particularly in the older parts of the town. I actually liken it with its similarity to another beautiful city, Dublin. The two are quite similar with their style and overall ambience. Like Dublin, I found Frankfurt to be busy, but pretty laid back. You will enjoy eating out here too, there are a ... more
