My Mainhattan

Advantages: lots to do
Disadvantages: during a day out you won't experience any

Calling Frankfurt Mainhattan is the same as calling some stinking canals Little Venice or a range of mounds a bit higher than a molehill Switzerland. Everything is relative, as no other German city has more high-rise buildings than Frankfurt (which has 50 in the centre) and the city lies on the banks of the river Main, Mainhattan it is. What do people associate with Frankfurt? Most can only come up with the international airport and banks (they ...
...to add Stock Exchange and City of the Euro which goes in the same direction. There are more than 400 banks which are responsible for the city's other nickname 'Bankfurt'. The other day I read that 70% of all visitors come for business and only 30% are real tourists who want to visit the city as such, the people responsible for tourism work hard to make Frankfurt more attractive to visitors, they don't have to exert themselves too much in my case ...

Frankfurt am Main restaurants not expensive

Advantages: "Restaurants: unhurried, relaxing, inexpensive, historical, even medievial" .... "Where?" ... "In Frankfurt am Main." .... "Never ! who do you take me for, save your stupid jokes for someone else !"
Disadvantages: "Are you kidding? This can`t be !... Frankfurt is a financial center, trade fare, traffic focus, airport and business place. Nix da medievial !! "

Frankfurt am Main (660.000 inhabitants) is not known for being a definite tourist attraction like Vienna or Munich. Frankfurt is often regarded in Germany only as a business centre and transit focus. It could be more for the visitior: e.g. modern playful architecture, history, museums, art, festivals and cultural events. The "expensive" reputation of Frankfurt one can get just on first sight. Because of the big events with thousands of people attending ...
...3.00 Euro. But there we won't go ... Restaurants in Frankfurt are mostly quite good in value. Such as: TIERRA VERDE (appendix 6, right picture) _________________ Ambience of the restaurant / surrounding environment: Situated in the popular (weekend / after work) shopping mile of the Berger Straße, a jovial alternative to the central Zeil with its big shopping centers. Fortunately Berger Strasse is not too much frequented with traffic, but nevertheless ...

Cool city

Advantages: My hometown
Disadvantages: My hometown

Frankfurt has about 650.000 inhabitants and is the fifth biggest city of Germany. You probably arrive at the airport which is the second largest –behind Heathrow- of Europe. Many people say that the city of Frankfurt is somewhere in the suburbs of the airport. Enough said? Maybe, nevertheless I will continue. From the airport, trains (S8 and S9, direction Offenbach or Hanau) take you in about 15 minutes to the city of Frankfurt. Get out at ...
...this kind of square (completely messed up in the Sixties) you find any kind of stores. Next to the huge Kaufhof-store Les Facettes is situated, an interesting mall with more than 100 shops. On top of it, you have a good view over Frankfurt downtown. Also the IMAX cinema is on top of that building. Some films are shown in English. Best view over Frankfurt and around you have from the Main Tower –one of the highest buildings, completely covered ...

It's not that bad - really

Advantages: Lots of things to do and see
Disadvantages: it has got its rough spots

So, this is my first ever opinion on ciao.uk - I hope you'll forgive me any mistakes, my English is just a tad rusty... Seeing as I live in Frankfurt and was born close by, I thinks it's only fair that I write something nice about it ;-). *Arrival* When you arrive at Frankfurt, you'll most probably hit the Main Train Station at one point or another. And --- this, I admit, is not the best place to detect the city's charme. Around the train station ...
...don't get put out by any drug-addicts you might see. They are there, but mostly harmless. The station itsself is in an abysmal state at the moment, the renovation planned could not be financed by Deutsche Bahn AG and the nets you see up on the ceiling are not there to keep the pidgeons out - they are there to protect unsuspecting travellers from falling bits of the roof - no joke. *City* But onwards to nicer parts of the town. Frankfurt, which has ...

Nice city in the heart of Germany

Advantages: beautiful historic area,in the heart of Germany
Disadvantages: at times a little expensive

Well I am living in Germany and in the Frankfurt area. Therefore I know the Frankfurt area quite well. When you see the ever growing Frankfurt airport you realized that Frankfurt is a city always on the move. Frankfurt is located in a region called the Rhein-Main Area. Surrounded by citys nearby (within 45 Minutes) called Mainz, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt and Giessen, Frankfurt is really the heart of this region. Also a one hour drive away is the beautiful ...
...and the Odenwald(`mountain`areas),that are really nice to see and of course the city of Rüdesheim, famous for its Drosselgasse. Frankfurt has a few things you have to see, when you are there. At first you go to the inner city and walk over the so called Zeil, which is the main street for shopping in Frankfurt. If you decide to see a movie you can do so, because the nearby Turmpalast is showing only Original Movies at 7 theatres. If you want to go sightseeing ...

Take the good with the bad

Advantages: good museums, food and drink
Disadvantages: it's a concrete jungle

I used to go to Frankfurt am Main all the time when I lived in Germany and it is the ugliest city I have been to. However, it does have its uses. For shopping it is good, there are several department stores around the town centre (around Hauptwache and on Zeil in particular) and plenty of expensive up-market shops can be found on Goethestrasse. It has a couple of 'original version' cinemas, where English films are shown undubbed. The main shopping ...
...is conveniently close to the Palmgarten, a park. The slightly more laid-back Sachsenhausen is a good place to be if you fancy some apple wine and West End is good if you fancy a stroll around quiet residential streets. For food, go to Grosse Bockenheimer Strasse or why not to my favourite chicken and fries place. It’s just a few doors down on the right hand side of the road directly opposite the railway station’s main entrance. You can’t ...

Frankfurt am Main - Worth a visit

Advantages: Culture, fun and party
Disadvantages: Quite busy and could be cleaner

Frankfurt am Main I lived in Frankfurt for just over 2 years. Long enough to enable me to tell you a bit about! Mainhattan and its skyscrapers This is the unofficial name for Frankfurt in Hessen with its ca. 630.000 inhabitants. It obviously refers to Manhattan being famous for its skyscrapers. Just like Frankfurt. And the Main is one of Germanys biggest river crossing Frankfurt. That is how the name was created. Frankfurt belongs to the towns ...
...in the area of the city centre. For example the "Messeturm" (trade fair tower) with its 259 m is the highest building in Europe. And you have a great view over the town standing on such a skyscraper when the sun goes down…. Frankfurt as economical town Frankfurt historically has a great importance of the development of Germany. Still today it is THE financial town where for example the European Central Bank residents. If you get to know somebody ...

THE CITY WHERE I LIVE

Advantages: Clean, big city,good sightseeing
Disadvantages: -

Ok not exactly, but i live 5-10km from it in a city called "Bad Homburg", in the subvillage "Ober Eschbach", next to Ober Eschbach is the village "Nieder Eschbach", it already belongs to frankfurt! So you can imagine that i visit Frankfurt very often, for example for shopping. HISTORY: The name "Frankfurt" is because about 1000 years ago the "Franken" lived in this area of Germany, and because of the river "Main" they made a "furt", its a way ...
...stuff. But later Frankfurt was very important, too. Many Kaiser visited it, and became Kaisers in Frankfurt! Since 1866 is Frankfurt part of Preussen, 1880 the "alte Oper" and 1886"the Hauptbahnhof" are opened. In the second worldwar the inner city of Frankfurt is nearly complete destroyed by bombs. 1949 Frankfurt is nearly getting the capital city of Germany, only a few votes are missing, but Berlin is getting capital city again. In 1997 the ...

THE TRUTH

Advantages: shopping paradise
Disadvantages: crime, dangerous, busy

I was born in Germany and life very close to Frankfurt. Naturally I have visited it often. It is a quite big city with a very important role concerning the flight business in Europe. The Airport is huge and has two terminals. It isn't very easy to find your place around. In Germany Frankfurt is also called Mainhatten, because the river Rhein goes through Frankfurt. It has also a lot of high buildings just like in Manhatten. Der Messeturm is propably ...
...has a lovely church to visit. It is called The Römer. If you enjoy shopping you should visit the Zeil, which is a very long shopping street. You can find a lot of good shops there and the prizes aren't too bad. But as Frankfurt is a big city, it is also known for a lot of crime. You should better watch your bags. A lot of hures are around and a good few strange people as well. If you want to go out. Frankfurt is a very good place for that. For example ...

A great weekend away

Advantages: Plenty to do and see
Disadvantages: None

Frankfurt is an ideal venue for a weekend away, there is plenty to do and see in this beautiful city. My time spent here was quite brief, 6 hours to be exact but what I saw of the city has prompted me to include it on my list of places to re-visit. Some of the architecture is quite breathtaking, particularly in the older parts of the town. I actually liken it with its similarity to another beautiful city, Dublin. The two are quite similar with their ...
...be busy, but pretty laid back. You will enjoy eating out here too, there are a multitude of places where you can go for a meal or a snack, you can't walk down the street without being tempted by one eaterie or another. When I went they were holding a food festival in the Town Square where you could sample local fare alongside foreign fare, the UK's offering was believe it or not jellied eels! What I saw of the city in my brief time there was pleasing ...

good shops in an ugly city

Advantages: shops, clubs
Disadvantages: deprived areas

The nicest area of Frankfurt's aross the river from the main commercial area - a place called Sachsenhausen. This is where the museums are, for the most part, and it's great at night. It's also where the few oldish buildings are. Don't be fooled by the old-looking buildings that are on all the postcards - they're pretty recent. The mayor even had one moved to face his office window. It's a good place to go clubbing, but if you go by train, don't ...
...the centre unless you want a sex show. This also applies to cinemas. It's a really huge city, and each area has its own personality. One unpleasant thing about Frankfurt is that I've never been to anywhere in Europe where more people have asked me for money. which doesn't do anything but make you feel guilty if you're a poor student and a ticket-collector just took your last 60dm because you thought you could buy tickets on the tram, like you can ...

My opinion on Frankfurt

Advantages: Interesting city to visit
Disadvantages: Rude people

I was visiting Frankfurt during Easters. It was an interesting experience visiting German without knowing any German. We checked into a 4 star hotel but was surprised by the rude service offered at the receptionist. Imagine a 4 star hotel doing this and it is at Frankfurt! I really can't believe my eyes. The rest of the day was fine, we has an enjoyable time in the city. No incidents happen until when we try to check our luggage into the airport. ...
...are not only rude but impolite as well. Hence, Frankfurt is not a good place to go....imagine all the rude services you will get! Places to visit in Frankfurt, there's a lot of skyscappers to make one feel like he/she is in USA. There's an old town which has very interesting pre war buildings. For better scenic views, try visit the outskirts of Frankfurt like Maine. ...

Don't go here unless you have to

Advantages: good food
Disadvantages: ugly city, expensive, bleak and not worth the trip

Frankfurt is quite possibly the ugliest city in all of Europe - certainly of the ones that I have been to. It has the dubious reputation of having the only airport pornshop in the world. It is this big sprawling metropolis of concrete and superglue. It was bombed to hell during the war so it is kind of like Portsmouth without the sea. The only reason that I go is that I am sent there on business the whole time. If you need a job it is easy to find ...

Frankfurt

Advantages: Variety of pubs, shops & cafes
Disadvantages: Lack of things to do

Thinking of going to Frankfurt? If so, then don’t be put off by expensive hotels in the business sector or sleazy dives in the red light district. The Youth Hostel offers cheap and modern accommodation, not just for young people, with friendly staff and good breakfasts. It is also situated in the old town, Sachsenhausen, where the majority of Frankfurt’s pubs are to be found – handy for crawling home to after a hard night. Across the river from the ...
...churches, museums and square, all worth a look for their architectural beauty. Along from this area are the many shops, from the massive department stores to the food markets. Although Frankfurt is a diverse city containing both modern skyscrapers and traditional town houses, it is not ideal for a long stay. An extended weekend is plenty to sample its charms (not to mention the apple wine and weekend flea market), any longer and you will be looking ...
