sun, sea, chickens, island life and lessons

Advantages: get a tan and learn to appreciate everything
Disadvantages: you may end up at a placement that has no cake

...anyone! I chose Gap because they appeared to be one of the cheapest and they had been doing it for so long i figured they'd know exactly what people like me needed. I was right. I had an interview in Reading where I was told the basics about the organisation and the placement possibilites. The interview also meant that they could try and pair me with someone who was similar to me. By this point I had chosen three possible locations for my year out: ...
...the placement. This is where GAP is really good, talking to someone who's already been puts your mind at rest and makes you more objective. Next thing was to go on my teaching skills course in London which was wicked fun and fairly useful. After that it was all go go go. Shopping for clothes, trying to fit everything into the bag, getting jabs, madness. The flight was long and tiring but very exciting, after I'd finished being scared. Orientation ...

Dangerously inept

Advantages: Do organise placements
Disadvantages: Amateurish and unreliable

...date, because I travelled with GAP on my year off in '94. But I feel very strongly, and my views have been backed up by everything I've ever heard about them, including my sister's experiences in Malaysia in '99. So. Let's start at the beginning. Who are GAP? Basically, they organise voluntary placements in a number of countries for people on their gap year, placements that vary from 3 months to a year, but are generally at least six months long. ...
...arrived, that contrary to what GAP had promised, we were expected to pay rent for our accommodation and also for food. GAP completely failed to sort this out when we reported it. Much more serious were the problems with our visas. One of the big attractions of GAP was that they handled all the paper work for you, a massive task if you don't know what you're doing. Ours were a month late in being issued -not their fault - and were supposed to be for ...

An experience I would never have had otherwise..

Advantages: Fantastic organisation; before, during and after
Disadvantages: Didn't let me stay longer.

...to do etc.. always! GAP seemed the perfect choice for me. They were passionate about taking a year off that meant something to employers as well as me. They had the experience and know-how that I didn’t have. As an 18 year old the ability to organise a trip or placement overseas independently is rare, if not impossible. Most countries require a visa, and that requires you know someone or some institution in your chosen country who will sponsor your ...
...has to be said that GAP was by far the cheapest I found, apparently they do lots of their own fundraising to reduce the cost – which I appreciated greatly. They are a charity too, which seemed important to me at the time, compared to lots of the other organisations which were limited companies. I am extremely grateful to GAP. It’s a shame to read of other people’s less-than perfect trips, but what GAP did give them was a once in a life-time experience ...

Taking a year out?

Advantages: Good pre trip orgainisation
Disadvantages: Not enough local support

I took a Gap year before I went to university year (1995-1996). I decided to do some voluntary work abroad and after considering various organisations I decided to apply to 'GAP Activity Projects'or 'GAP. GAP offered several volunteer projects across the world, but concentrated in Asia, South America and Africa i.e much of the developing world. My love has always been for South America and I decided to go for a project teaching kids in Paraguay. ...
...about £200 registration fee to GAP and I also needed to pay extra for the TEFL training, but I did receive a qualification at the end of it. The flights were also organised by GAP so that all the volunteers could travel together which was good as it took the edge off leaving mum and dad on my own! I did not think the support was as good in Paraguay. GAP did have a local rep there, but she did not offer much support. I did feel sort of dumped at ...

My Greatest Memory

Advantages: an amazing experince with the possibility to do whatever you want...the Gap year Projects is what you make of it
Disadvantages: I couldnt stay

...away) I left on my Gap Year Project, which was to spend two ten week placements doing conservation work. I had no idea what to expect, it was all very exciting, when I got there I didnt like it, it was hard work, I was outdoors and I was hot. But soon I got over the physically challenging side of my Gap year and started to really have a look around and I saw some amazing things, I took in what was around me, it made me more aware. Back in England ...
...lowest point in my entire Gap year, and it was when I was in Australia in NSW standing on a beach with the waves crashing in, the sand under my boots and sea as far as my eye could see, and of course to top this lovely image the floodgates of heaven that day had decided to break the drought in NSW and soak me through and through. We still carried on with the job at hand however, and that was walking up and down the beach picking up.....cigie butts, ...

Mind the GAP

Advantages: Cheap, good range of placements
Disadvantages: limited help given

Gap Activity Projects seemed to be the ideal solution when I decided to take my gapyear. I wanted to head to Asia for about 6 months to get some work experience before starting uni the next year. All the other companies had either been too expensive or didn't have any projects I like the sound of. So I decided to spend 6 months working in a hospital in Japan with GAP. Building up to depature everthing went pretty smoothly, GAP helped to sort out ...
...days later me and my GAP partner arrived in Hiroshima to start our placement. Everyone overwhelmed us with their kindness, we were given a few weeks of language lessons a nice flat and generally made to feel pretty special. After the 3 weeks of Japanese lessons we started work in the hospital and this is where problems started to begin. For the most part work was so boring and really depressed us, we tried to make it more fun but it didn't really ...

Getting better and better

Advantages: Fabulously friendly
Disadvantages: Didn't want to come home

...i took my well organised Gap year in China I have been recommending GAP to everyone I can. They are really friendly and, most importantly, keen to improve. I have been involved with the organisation since my return and have been impressed with the way they are constantly seeking feedback and improving areas which have been a bit ropey in the past. The range of activities is huge, as is the selection of countries. I found that the support was adequate; ...
