Advantages: Great site loads of info! Disadvantages: Still need to save the moeny to go!
I have been looking into buying a round the world ticket and I have come across this brilliant website called www.gapyear.com. It is amazing and has absolutely every thing you possibly need to know!
It is easy to use and laid out very clearly into different sections so you can find out the information your require. They also have a great message board where you can talk to other gappers about their experiences and ideas. I have been looking for ... ...to meet people. If you want to chat to others you need to set up a profile, this is free and easy to do. You will need to fill in your details name, address etc, you can add a photo if you wish and also put information about your travels on here. Once you have done this you can post messages on the boards and contact other gappers through the site. You can add people to your friends list so that you can message each other. Advantages: Lots of information on everything you need to know Disadvantages: So much info, having time to read it all
I am currently planning a round the world trip for the end of this year and one website has been invaluable in helping me plan the trip. The website in question is gapyear.com. Aimed not only at those planning gap years for before or after university but also career gappers and anyone who is considering going backpacking. Established in 1998 by two backpackers the site has grown to include tens of thousands of members from all over the world and ... ...As you load the home page at www.gapyear.com you are greeted with quite a busy page with lots of information on it set against a blue and white background. From here you can access through links practically every area of the site. Set across the top are 9 tabs, one for each area of the site:

Hi.
This is my first ever opinion that I have written on here and, as you can guess from the title, I have decided to write it on Gap Years.
I'm 18 years old and I have just completed my A levels in comprehensive school and I have now decided to take a year out from education.
I had to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages and for me the advantages outweighed the disadvantages.
Like me, these are the things you have to ask yourself.
Why ... ...towards the end of my A levels that things were getting on top of me.
If you feel like this then I strongly recommend you take a year out.
The way I looked at it was, if I went straight on to the university then I would probably crack under the pressure and it's much better to take a year out than show the University or College that you can't cope.
What will I do during the year ?
================================
I have decided to find employment ...

Advantages: Very helpful Disadvantages: Takes ages to arrive if ordered from the site
Choosing to go into a gapyear can be a very important decision and rightly so! But, have you ever though about some sort of company specialising in gapyears. Well daa daa ...
I found gapyear.com and when you visit the site you can apply for a free magazine. In this magazine you will find absolutely everything to do with gapyears. You can even read about peoples gapyears and see how they have coped.
Also you can win a gapyear around the world along ... ...do recommend this magazine because of it's pin point accuracy and absolutely facinating articles. It even includes information about colleges and universities. I personally think it would be good for a student who has just finished college and is very profoundly mistified by the oppurtunities that are available to them. One pun though is that most of the reader experiences are of kids with money burning a hole in their pockets so K!!
The magazine ...

Advantages: Loads of info, helpful staff, useful messagboards Disadvantages: Can be a bit slow
...before and after taking my gapyear. It's a great place to meet people in a similar position wanting to take a gapyear or just people who enjoy travelling in general.
The site is filled with information about how to plan your gapyear and it really does help to motivate you to do something. There are ideas for what you can do and a big selection of diaries from people who have done it all before. That's probably the main advantage of the site, it ... ...have just returned rather than paid staff.
There is also information and tips on individual countries which didn't used to be that extensive but has improved a lot recently.
The messageboards are usually friendly and useful though if you want specific information on a particular country you are prehaps overall better off asking on the lonely planet messageboards because more people read them.
Overall a very addictive website which will suck you ...

Go For IT
I think a gap year is an excellent idea, I took two and I think I really appreciated from them, now their more opportunities than ever to do what you want. There are some excellent ideas, and they cover the majority of areas people want to go in when they decide they need a break from studying
I went to India and spent six months teaching English, it was great, I learnt so much, I had some really good times, and some bad times,, all of ... ...think if I didn’t have the break I wouldn’t have appreciated my university degree. You come back with so much more ideas. The downside is that you don’t always think you should go back, you live the easy life, working and earning and having a good time, that you think what is the point. That is when reality hits home, and you realise that you can’t live like that forever. Whether you take your gap year after your alevels or ...

Advantages: ALways updated Disadvantages: There is too much in there!!!
This is definitely one of my favourite websites - www.gapyear.com
I log on everytime I'm on the net for a quick peek. To register is free and this allows you to create an online profile, chat with fellow travellers and share tips about travel. It is a great resource just simply talking to others who have been the places your thinking of visiting.
There is a handy online shop for all your travel essential items priced at good rates. There is also ... ...and plan for your travels.
Each country has important travel information given on them, how to get there, how to get around, ideas of costs, these sorts of things.
As it is a gapyear site it gives you graeat ideas on how to spend your year out whether it be volunteering or work experience of simply travelling and gives you links to all the relevant sites needed for further info.
Another benefit of this is the newsletter, very informative and great ...

Whether you are going for a long weekend or a 2 year gap this website is the place to start planning. With information on every country, messageboards to ask others questions and a facility to find people who will be overseas at the same time as you this website has it all. They can give advice on finding jobs, finding placements and they even have a shop to help you decide and/or buy what products you will need. Advantages: None come to mind Disadvantages: Allows teenagers to undertake roles they would not be allowed to undertake in this country...eg.teaching
I have never had a gap year!! I don't think they had been 'invented' when I was 18, and anyway I was nearly 29 before I went to university. However, I did spend 3.5 years in Zambia as a VSO volunteer after having qualified as a nurse. VSO will only take people who are professionally qualified and have a minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience. In other words...people who go out as VSO volunteers have something to offer the people they go ... ...found it somewhat amusing to hear teenagers telling me how they have spent a year 'teaching' in a developing country. Like we are qualified to teach at 18 years old??? The perceived 'necessity' of a gap year puts unbelieveable pressure on young people whose financial situation simply doesn't allow for it. It has become like a competition among teenagers to see who can go to the most exotic place and have the most interesting experience.
If young ...
