HAND IN HAND WITH DANTE, VERNE AND JAMES JOYCE

Advantages: most beautiful little towns in the world
Disadvantages: tourism is not on the topest level

*** Istria is the largest peninsula on the Adriatic Coast, it belongs to Croatia, ex Yugoslavia. It is the westernmost region of Croatia. Istria was that* gorgeous place that James Joyce wrote from, to his brother Stanislaus in Dublin. The average annual hours of sunshine on the Istrian Peninsula are 2,380. When it rains everywhere, some part of Istria remains dry and untouched. The largest town is Pula (82,000 inhabitants). Istria is the place ...
...is called Hum and is the smallest town in the world. The best-protected Istrian harbor is Pula, the narrow bay cuts 4-km inland. That is the largest lighthouse in Istria, 36 m high, built in 1818. Jules Verne in his novel "Mathias Sandorf", glorifies the Roman monuments of Istria, Pula and its nature. There is Roman Empire all over Istria though. Travel stories and ancient pictures carved in the stone slab of the old Roman Town in the Adriatic must ...

One Hundred and One Dalmatians

Advantages: Croatia Wants Tourists
Disadvantages: Tourism Could Spoil Croatia

The Croatians say that if you count the number of spots on a Dalmatian dog you will find that there are over two thousand of them – as many spots as there are islands along the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. Our ship, the M/S Dalmacija, was to take us from the Port of Venice, across the Adriatic and then we were to cruise through the islands, isles and reefs of Dalmatia docking and disembarking at several historic towns and cities such as Split and ...
...then returning to Venice for a last spectacular evening viewing Venice by night in a motorboat. Are you excited – because we certainly were? The M/S Dalmacija's main claim to fame was that it was used to film scenes for the film 'The Talented Mr Ripley' adapted from a novel by Patricia Highsmith and starring Matt Damon and Jude Law. It was clearly the oldest ship we had sailed on and had an air of faded grandeur about it, but it had a charming Croatian ...

It's not all guns and emotional Gorans

Advantages: Easily accessible by car from Europe, still value for money, lovely beaches
Disadvantages: everytime you tell your friends you've been there you'll have to answer the 'but what about the war?' question :-)

No, it's not a dangerous place and there aren't snipers waiting in the bushes! Phew, I'm glad I've gotten that out of the way before I launch into this review! As part of a recent European driving holiday my Significant Other and I headed to the coast of Croatia, to the seaside town of Porec. We drove down from Munich through Ljubljana in Slovenia and then on to Porec in Croatia, a trip of around 5 hours, so not too far to travel. To say we didn't ...
...Would we be driving through a countryside strewn with burnt out houses and in the aftermath of the war would there be widespread poverty and the crime that results from this situation? I'm glad to say, in the case of Porec at least, the answer was a resounding no. It is a seaside holiday resort, simply thronging with tourists, mostly Italians and Germans. Accomodation is very reasonable - we stayed in a 3 star hotel with a swimming pool, gym facilities ...

A WEEK OFF WORK, SUNGLASSES, HIRE CAR, KRK AND RAB

Advantages: sunshine, prices and stunning scenery
Disadvantages: none

I had long wanted to visit Croatia after hearing stories of how beautiful and varied the country is, all I can say is the stories I'd heard really underated Croatia - the phrase stuning springs to mind. I set off with two friends for our annual get-a-way on the cheap, you know the type, bufget flights to an airport in the middle of nowhere and a long hike to the final destination. This year wasn't much different. We got flights to Venice, arriving ...
...by sleeping on a bench in St Marks square, beautiful as St Marks is I wouldn't recommend it for a good nights sleep ! Undaunted (and very tired ) the next morning we picked up our hire car and crammed ourselves into it. The original plan had been to head through Trieste onto Slovenia and straight sown the coastal road towards Split during the next few days - funny how plans can go awry ! After reaching Trieste and getting hopelessly lost we admitted ...

Hvar - My favourite place

Advantages: Beautiful, cheap, friendly, sunny....
Disadvantages: More tourists each year

I first went to Croatia a little over a year ago, not really knowing what to expect. I have since returned 6 times. Predominantly, I have visited Hvar, an island off the Dalmatian coast. It is famous for the amount of sunshine it gets each year, and it has the most beautiful, clear water I have ever seen. The island is small, so the sea is never far away, and there are mountains all over. The main town is (slightly confusingly) also called Hvar. ...
...of tourists milling round during the summer months, and it can be difficult, even though the prices are no more expensive than in England, to get over the feeling that you're being stung for as much money as traders can get out of you. One particular bar to avoid if money is tight is Carpe Diem, which has the best cocktails ever, but at hugely inflated tourist prices. However, everyone who has visited the island seems to have been there. The main ...

Park of the Lakes of Plitvice

Advantages: A stupendous nature. only! SO MANY CIGARETTES IN LESS!
Disadvantages: so many kms afoot but they don't feel him that to the reentry in the hotel!

The natural park of Plitvice is a show that absolutely owes to be seen. My suggestion is spend to2 days in visiting it! The 9th of July we reached Plitvice and from the entry 1 we get to the office of the tourism where two "Nice" Girls make us know that there were no rooms at the, that the don't sell hotel rooms and convinced us to accept a setup in a private lodging. As always, I mistrustfulled because I wanted to stay in the first hotel that directly ...
...candidly tolds me that there were 4 of 5 double-betted room remaining at 105 Euros per night breakfast included! Not badly! We sat up in thew hotel and postponed our excursion to the park to the next morning, also considering that, for the we just have had uor dose of journey: 400 km! The 10th of July, at 9 o'clock in the morning the park opened, we made a 2 days tickets and we entered to visit this stupendous natural park that, from 1979 The Unesco ...

The Markarska Riviera

Advantages: fewer tourists and 'lager louts' Virtually no crime. beautiful country
Disadvantages: may be a slight language problem-some natices are fluent in english but a lot speak german better, and of course their own language.

Until July 2000 i would have said steer clear of Croatia-after all isn't it all war-torn? And why would anyone want to go there? Then i found the answer. Croatia is a beautiful country, with majestic mountains, breathtaking scenery and crystal clear seas. The coastline which stretches along most of the country is one of the most beautiful. Croatia is home to thousands of islands, of which about 60 are inhabited. During my visit i stayed in the ...
...dalmatian coast. It is well worth a visit. So too is Baska Voda, only 15 minutes walk along the beach. The tourist town of Markarska is bustling with people during the summer months, but be warned, it is not for those who simply want a relaxing holiday. Mnay hotels offer traditional croatian cusine, entertainment, and the weekly gala dinners are not to be missed! In the area there are few reuglar buses, but the local taxi drivers have taken to ...

Split Decision

Advantages: Wonderfully varied scenery; superb climate and excellent local food
Disadvantages: Breakfast

In the end my wife decided we SHOULD visit our Bosnian friends, refugees in Split. The town built round the Roman Emperor Diocletian's palace is superb with narrow streets wending their way under arches and in some cases underground. Small squares house a plethora of little cafes and interesting shops; on every street corner there is something to see: a saint in a niche, a roman pillar, a medieval statue. Then there's the peristyle, complete with ...
...The Adriatic laps up to the walls of the promenade shaded by palms and other trees; the vista from a distance is gloriously " Mediterranean ". We flew from UK to Pula where we visted the ampitheatre and temple, and overnighted in a sort of Communist type holiday camp. The Istrian peninsula is well worth a longer stay than we managed. Travelling to Split by ferry we enjoyed excellent food on board and a chance to see the many islands dotted around ...

A beautiful country to visit

Advantages: Wonderful scenery and weather
Disadvantages: Tucepi has too many families and children

I went to Croatia in July 2008. It is a beautiful country with many places to visit. If you like sunshine, then during the summer months, you will get weeks of the stuff. I stayed at the Hotel Neptune in Tucepi. Although the hotel was very basic, I found it enough for my needs, as I enjoyed going out and exploring the untouched countryside. I explored the countryside by using the mountain bikes for hire, and the rough terrain is a challenge for the ...
...leisurely ride, then there are a number of public footpaths to do this on. Although I am not a fan of sandy beaches, I didn't like the sea fronts here, with them being no sand at all, and just rocks and pebbles which make it uncomfortable to sit/lay on for sun bathing. There is no nightlife in Tucepi, with the only bar I saw open until 11pm. Likewise, there is no shopping facilities in Tucepi, but I enjoyed a pleasant trip to Makarska, which is ...

Now that the war is over

Advantages: Quiet
Disadvantages: Not for the ravers

If you are looking for a different holiday destination then may I suggest Croatia. It's beaty may have been sullied by the recent event and civil strife that has affected the whole region but the people are eager to make amends and make your holiday there one to remember. It may be wise to remember that hardly anyone is travelling there because of the recent event, but rest assured that those days have gone and is is still one of the best and quietest ...

Breathtakingly beautiful scenery

Advantages: Beautiful scenery, good value for money
Disadvantages: none

I and my husband went to Porec, in Croata, about five years ago. We were amazed at how cheap everything was and at the friendliness of the croation people. There was plenty of places to see with roman ruins for the historically minded people. and breathtakingly beautiful scenery for the rest. An example of the friendly people was when we went for a meal in Porec and ordered a pizza each, to be told that "one would be enough for both of us" he was ...

It feels like walking through a living museum when you walk around Dubronic in particular. Definitely an experience we will repeat when we have the chance ...

Croatia forever

Advantages: nature, clean place, kind people, warm weather, cheap
Disadvantages: language

I was in Croatia twice and I really fell in love with this country. Clean, cheerful, kind, healthy. I was on Vir, a small island near Zadar and this was the place for people who like quiet, beautiful and romantic place. There were no discos and parties, but the bars were open till midnight and you could take gorgeous romantic walk along the seaside without any fear. You neednt to be afraid of anything. No sharks, no earthquakes, no thieves. Local ...
...usually quite cheap. You also neednt to worry about accomodation. You can go there without any reservation and you will still find some private house for a good price. You can of course go for camping or go to the hotel. But in my opinion, you have more freedom in private house and kindness of local people which will show you many things and welcome you with local well known Sljivovica. ...
