An island-sized golf course
Review of General: England by
DaisyRose
Advantages: Beautiful, historic, friendly
Disadvantages: EXPENSIVE!
I spent September 1984 and September 1986 traveling through England, Scotland, and Wales with a girlfriend. We had a fabulous time and I always wanted to go back for more, but life got in the way and I never did. It wasn't until last year, when our choir was invited to sing Evensong services for a week at the York Minster cathedral in York that my husband and I started making plans. He'd never been there, and I immediately laid out a terrific trip ...

Walking from Plath to Bronte!
Review of General: England by
Slug
Advantages: Great walk through history
Disadvantages: None for me!
West Yorkshire in England is something of a walker’s paradise, being close to both the Yorkshire Dales to the north and the Peak District to the south. While the attractions of both of these national parks are well documented, West Yorkshire itself boasts some smaller but no less impressive areas ideal for walking and rambling.
One of my personal favourites for its sheer diversity is the nineteen mile circular walk which connects Hebden Bridge ...

REDUCE SPEED, CAMERAS KILL
Review of General: England by
jamespugh
Advantages: Police get more and more of are dosh
Disadvantages: Cause acidents
Speed kills, but you will find it kills much less than the cameras trying to control it.
Speed cameras are becoming more and more of a problem in are modern motorised society.
Up until recently all speed cameras were based on an analogue system, meaning that photos of speeding drivers had to be taken on film. These films had to be regularly changed, and proved very expensive and time consuming for the police, and so very few were about. They ...

BONFIRES and FIREWORKS -- OH MY
Review of General: England by
Reynarda
Advantages: Brightens the Dark November Sky and chases away the blues
Disadvantages: Scares the dogs
It's dark and wet and windy and all of a sudden, the sky is illuminated with Fireworks! As if someone mixed up a Ray Bradbury story with the 4th of July in the USA! ... or Dominion (sorry, CANADA) Day!
On November 5 (or the weekend before or the weekend after), is Guy Fawkes Day (Night) and it is celebrated (?) with fireworks and with a HUGE Bonfire.
So who/m is Guy? According to www.googlism.com, guy fawkes is the person most associated with ...

Where is the British Army Now. Not At Aldershot
Review of General: England by
ashford
Advantages: Good Location Nice Residential Areas Good Food
Disadvantages: House Prices are High Night Life A tad Limited.
Many, many, years ago like a lot of other young men, I was stationed in the Aldershot area In those far-off days when a cup of tea cost about 2 pence, Aldershot was widely regarded as the "..... Home of the British Army...". The town housed the famed "...Red Devils..." - no not Manchester United but the Parachute Regiment! The Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC), the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), the Royal Engineers (the Sappers), ...

New Speed Cameras.....
Review of General: England by
tomrhodes
Advantages: Catches all speeders
Disadvantages: Mondeo man will lose his licence quickly!
The familiar grey boxes at the roadside and white lines on the road have in many ways failed to halt the worst excesses of speeding in the UK.
People familiar with the main roads know exactly where the cameras are situated and slow down when approaching them so as not to get caught. The cameras therefore only act as a deterant at that particular point on the road. The cameras are often several hundred yards from junctions so that by the time the ...

Breathtaking Bodiam
Review of General: England by
penguin_too
Advantages: Beautiful
Disadvantages: Precarious stairs
Bodiam Castle is one of the most beautiful castles I have ever seen. Built in the 14th Century by a very successful gentleman Sir Edward Dalygrigge who had been given a Royal Charter, it still remains to enchant and bewitch you.
It is like stepping into a fairytale as you step onto the footbridge over the moat which surrounds Bodiam. Big grey fish slash in the water around you, ducks and geese look extremely hopeful, but you find that you are drawn ...

Ideal Holiday Location
Review of General: England by
jonwhite
Advantages: Relaxing, beautiful, historic
Disadvantages: None
If you are looking for a relaxing, adventurous and fun holiday, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life then holidaying on the Norfolk Broads has got to be my number one choice. This boating holiday is certain to revive you.
To call the Broads by their correct title 'The Norfolk and Suffolk Broads' they are located between Norwich and the North Sea in Eastern England. The broads consist of over 120 miles of navigable waterways. The area itself ...

A 17th Century house, designed by Sir Roger Pratt for Sir Ralph Bankes to replace his ruined family seat at Corfe Castle. The house was altered by Sir Charles Barry in the 19th Century, the house contains the outstanding collection of paintings and other works of art accumulated by William Bankes. Studland Beach and Nature Reserve
Review of General: England by
sarah_stitch
Advantages: Fine beaches
Disadvantages: Limited Parking and amenities
Studland Beach and Nature Reserve
Fine sandy beaches stretch continuously for 3 miles from South Haven Point to the chalk cliffs of Handfast point and old harry rocks, and includes shell bay and a designated nudist area.
The heathland behind the beach is a national nature reserve and a haven for many rare birds and other forms of wildlife.
You can walk dogs along the beach and through the nature reserve, but beware of walking through the ...

English Country Cottages
Review of General: England by
Michael-S
Advantages: very nice cottages, a lot of choice
Disadvantages: sometimes your favourites are fully booked
We found English Country Cottages the very best way to spend our holidays in England, and we have done so for a number of times.
If you like self-catering and if you don't want to miss feeling like in an English home, then you should consider to select a typical English cottage out of the many cottages on offer by English Country Cottages, an organisation that acts as an agent.
They offer a substantial number of cottages, for 2 to 12 or even ...

Oasis - Lake District
Review of General: England by
sarahcarolyn
Advantages: a wide variety of activities for all the family
Disadvantages: it's not cheap
I have been to Oasis twice, and on both occasions I have found it to be an ideal venue for a family holiday. I have two young children and there is loads there to occupy all of us.
Our last holiday included ten pin bowling, horse riding, swimming, organised walks and shows for the children. And for the adults there was archery, volley ball, squash, and I enjoyed an afternoon’s pampering at the beauticians.
We found it made it easier and more enjoyable ...

Bourton on the Water - a Grand Day Out
Review of General: England by
tattie123
Advantages: relaxing, peaceful and very clean
Disadvantages: can get very busy in the summer
Its Sunday, the sun is shining and you know that if you stay at home you will end up going stir crazy. So what do you do? You get in the car and head to Bourton on the Water that's what. Which is exactly how we have spent today and have spent many of our Sundays previously.
Situated in the heart of the Cotswolds and affectionately known as the Venice of the Cotswolds, Bourton is a picturesque village built around a brook that runs through its heart. ...

A SOUTH AFRICAN IN THE UK (ENGLISHMAN IN NY)
Review of General: England by
Sibella1
Advantages: Close to the rest of Europe
Disadvantages: Read my review
Maybe if I came to England as a visitor it would be different. Everything would probably be interesting to me, instead of irritating and depressing, but I have been living here for 21 months and this is my experience:
1. The weather is extraodinarily terrible. Last summer was bad, this one worse - probably only five nice days. I mean we are happy when it is 22 degrees celsius - what's that!! So your number one topic is the weather - the absence ...

Something for everyone
Review of General: England by
Liberty1
Advantages: Something for everyone
Disadvantages: The weather!!!!!!!
Hopefully England has something for everyone. From busy seaside resorts, excellant shopping centres in towns, historic buildings, Castles and palaces, rugged moors, and green downs, the Pennines as the back bone of England with their mountain scenery. London of course being is capital, is also ,I find a tourist's dream, although it can be pricey. Hotels and guests houses are in all the main cities and tourist areas, with several people also providing ...
