Taste of the orient

Advantages: Shopping, Food, Sightseeing, Transport, Octopus Card
Disadvantages: Very Hot, Crowded and Mosquitos

For years Hong Kong has been a hugely popular holiday destination for western tourists and I finally had the opportunity to travel there in April 2004. This wasn't going to be my first time in Hong Kong as I had been when I was around 8 years old. Since I was only very young I couldn't really appreciate the atmosphere and cultural value of Hong Kong. The reason for my visit to Hong Kong was partly for pleasure but also because I was attending a wedding. ...
...family also hails from there. My time of travel was just before my gcse exams and I was pretty sick of school work so I thought it would be nice to have a break prior to my exams. For many years Hong Kong was under British colonial rule up until 1996/7 when it was returned to Chinese control by John Major's Conservative Government. Hong Kong is located around South east China surrounded by deep waters. The surroundings and scenery are dominated by ...

What time is it? Hong Kong time!!

Advantages: Great Bargins, Most speak English, Spectacular views
Disadvantages: Rude people on the streets!!!

Lights, Action, Old World vs. New World, Shopping! These were all the things that I had in my mind as I prepared for my 4 day visit to Hong Kong. All that I knew about Hong Kong came from movies that stared Jackie Chan or James Bond. Was it a Fairy Tale illusion?? ~Arrival~ Upon landing at Hong Kong International airport, I prayed that the pilot would make sure and turn the correct way as the airport is located on a reclaimed island mass. The water's ...
...quick and easy. There was the standard immigration card to fill out which was given to us before we even boarded the plane. So, I had it filled out before we left Singapore. We found the arrivals hall MASSIVE!! If you do not have prebooked transport to your hotel, don't worry as there are a large variety of services offered from standard bus to limousine services. As our transport was part of a package, we checked in with our rep and then proceeded ...

Hong Kong

Advantages: Clean, safe city which is really alive.
Disadvantages: It's a long, long flight.

Hong Kong Hong Kong offers so much for the visitor. Those who are seeking a clean, safe venue for their holiday, where you can stroll - even late at night - with nobody approaching you; choose from a huge selection of modern hotels; eat at a wide choice of restaurants, and have an excellent modern transport system will not be disappointed. For the kids there are their favourites - MacDonalds, KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants. How to get there: There ...
...book a flight and hotel online. Try Travelbag, Opodo, Thomas Cook and any of the airlines - Cathay Pacific, KLM Royal Dutch Airline, Virgin Atlantic, Quantas, British Airways all have flights every day. If you are planning well in advance, check the prices every day as they change frequently. Almost always you will find one or more of the airlines have special offers, and again these prices change from day to day. The most I have paid for a return ...

Hooray for Honkers!

Advantages: Great shopping and more culture than you could shake a stick at!
Disadvantages: Some things quite expensive

When I decided on Hong Kong as a holiday destination the main reason was that it was kind of in the middle between Australia, (where I am) and good old Blighty (where my friend and travelling companion is). Well I say in the middle, it's a 9 hour flight from Sydney and a total of 15 hours for my friend who would be travelling down from Manchester, going through Heathrow and then a short stop in Dubai. I don't really know how we settled on Hong Kong, ...
...I was keen enough to go it wasn't on the top of my places to go list. As the trip got closer, I bought the guide books and searched the Web and began to realise we'd made a dam good choice! Getting There Easy peasy for me. Direct from Sydney to Hong Kong with Virgin Atlantic cost me $1080 AUD which is about £415 at the current rate of exchange. I wasn't very impressed with the Virgin plane, for such a long flight they used an Airbus A320 which is ...

Best City On The Planet.

Advantages: Lively, lots to do, shop til you drop.
Disadvantages: Hot wet and sticky in summer, crowded, can be expensive.

Firstly, the best thing I can advise you about visiting Hong Kong is to buy a good guide book. The city is very compact (and very crowded) and a good guide book will provide you with comprehensive maps and a list of things to do and see. From the moment you arrive in Hong Kong, you get an idea of what you've let yourself in for. Everyone seems to be rushing around in a purposeful manner attending to business. I have visited this city many times and ...
...culture clash which is unlike anywhere else on earth. Arrival at Chek Lap Kok airport is a lesson in efficiency. You'll have collected your bags and cleared customs and immigration in no time at all. Once you get to the transportation center you have four choices to get to the city center. 1st choice is the S1 bus to Tung Chung MTR (Mass Transit Railway - the Hong Kong equivalent of the metro) station. From there you can reach almost anywhere in ...

Hong Kong PHEWEY

Advantages: some nice sights
Disadvantages: the stench, the cleanliness, the pollution........

I'm BACK!!! OK, so you didn't miss me, didn't even know I was gone probably, but nevertheless I'm going to use this opportunity to tell you what I've been up to and give you the run down on Hong Kong… Asia's world city… Back in May, I fled the country to go and work for a couple of months in a place that is renowned as one of the world's most vibrant cultural cities. In my time there I got to see a lot of Hong Kong and experience the culture from ...
...a tourist, so I should have plenty of experiences to share with you….and thus begins my novel…. So let's start with Hong Kong's good points. The first thing that strikes you when you land in Hong Kong, is the heat and humidity. The heat at a pleasant 30 degrees is nice. The humidity however was at 96 per cent when I landed so to a typical Brit like me, it meant profuse sweating for the first couple of weeks of getting used to it. After landing ...

Hong Kong by a Hong Kong resident

Advantages: Food, transportation, variety of shops, vibrant nightlife, some excellent views, climate
Disadvantages: Expensive, pollution, inconsistent service

Where is Hong Kong? I'm sure the majority of you know where it is. Its a city at the southern tip of China, and it's where I live. It's split into 4 territories: Lantau, Kowloon, Hong Kong Island and New Territories. That's all I think you should know about Hong Kong. I will list a few major tourist destinations in Hong Kong, and next to that, the territory they are in: Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon) Mong Kok (Kowloon) Central (Hong Kong Island) Causeway ...
...Hong Kong, I have seen Hong Kong go through a lot of major changes. I have noticed that more and more people come here, hence making the streets very crowded. Anyway, I will now begin with the pros of Hong Kong as a city. One of Hong Kong's greatest features is its diversity of food. Without a doubt, Hong Kong has so many restaurants with so many different cuisines. This ranges from American to Italian to French to British to Chinese (be careful ...

Bustling with life 24 hours

Advantages: Great variety of things
Disadvantages: So humid

When people mention Hong Kong what do they imagine? Boats, chinese and not so good things may be the answer. Well the lesson of life is to never judge a book by its cover. To truly experience the real Hong Kong you have to go there in person. My last trip to Hong Kong was in July, I travelled with Cathay Pacific, a Hong Kong based airline that is one of the best in the world for customer service, I don't think I've ever suffered a delay with them. ...
...main bulk of Hong Kong the landings were spectacular, flying over the neon lights of skyscrapers was a breathtaking sight. But now things are more sensible, and so they should be with the new super sized technological airport. An airport so big that when you land you have to get the express airport train to the main departures longue itself! One thing that will hit you as soon as you step foot outside is the dense humidity of the air, at first its ...

Review from a native

Advantages: Shopping, multi-cultural, great food, great nightlife, very safe city
Disadvantages: pollution, noise, can be expensive

I thought it would be a good idea for me to write a review of HongKong since i was born there and then spent a further 14yrs of my life there. Don't worry, i won't be too biased since i've been gone for over 4yrs and it's made me realise some of the bad points. A little background info, i'm half french half mauritian and don't speak a word of cantonese. I lived in HK under British aswell as Chinese rule and spent my most influenciable years there ...
...when you get there is the insane amount of skyscrapers and lack of space. Everything seems to be on top of the other and everyone just seems to be in such a rush that they'd walk over you to get past. But i must admit, being a city girl this affects me in no way and in fact, i enjoy the hustle and bustle of a big city. My parents still live out there and i recently visited them with my boyfriend who had never been to Asia. I was therefor forced into ...

In Hong Kong with SARS outbreak

Advantages: View from Victoria Peak, Ocean Park
Disadvantages: SARS, didn't have as much to offer as I had expected

Summary This is a travelogue about the trip that my wife, Nikki, and I took to China (Beijing, Xi’an and Hong Kong) in the period from March 15th to March 29th 2003. We first spent 7 days in Beijing and we got to see the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace and so on. From Beijing we took an overnight train to Xi’an and our main goal there was to see the Terra-Cotta Warriors but we also got to see a few other things. ...
...and from there we took the boat to Hong Kong (HK), where we stayed for about 5 days. In HK we visited Ocean Park, Victoria Peak, the Space Museum and so on. Arriving in Shenzhen - and going to Hong Kong We landed in Shenzhen at about 4 pm after a 2 hour flight from Xi'an and we were met by 23 degrees Celsius. Once we had picked up our suitcases we started looking for a way to get to HK. We soon found a sign saying ”To HK” and a boat displayed on ...

A Truly Life Changing Experience

Advantages: Everything transport food shopping sight seeing....
Disadvantages: Disneyland Hong Kong please avoid

I have had the opportunity of visiting Hong Kong twice in my relatively short lifetime. I first visited when I was around nine years of age and the experience seemed to pass me by extremely quickly. However my second visit to Hong Kong at the age of fifteen was a genuine life changing experience, realising the destination where I desired to live and work. My mother and her family are Chinese and returning to their Homeland was an emotional experience. ...
...Earth has affected me more than my visit in the summer of 2007. The city of Hong Kong is one of vibrancy and beauty. It is strange describing a hustle and bustling city as one of Beauty however Hong Kong is not like any other city. Hong Kong is a city of diversity and variety. One can expect the usual towering skyscrapers of large cities of the world however Hong Kong differs vastly as the city has areas of pure tranquillity and peace such as Lantau ...

The sights, sounds and smells

Advantages: Good transport system, an experience all must take
Disadvantages: Dirty, crowded and overestimated

Hong Kong. Place of dreams, and somewhere I have had the privilege of visiting just recently. No doubt everyone has heard someone they know rave about the sights and sounds of Hong Kong, which are probably unique to the world. But what really hit me were the smells. In Hong Kong, even the most devoted city dweller will begin to feel claustrophobic. The skyscrapers lean in on you from every side, and the drivers believe the roads are their personal ...
...space. And overhanging all of this is the smell. Out in the streets, walking along the overemphasised façade of modern, sheek, Western designer fashion stores, is the tantalising reminder of what Hong Kong really is. Chinese. We British may believe that Hong Kong has so adapted to our way of life that they would remain addicted to it even after we had left. How could we be so naïve? We were always the overlord, the master, the conqueror, if you will, ...

Hong Kong is King

Advantages: good shopping, lovely food & people.
Disadvantages: hot, humid, dirty, rainy, costly

Hong Kong is a wonderful city filled with friendly people lots to see and do. However, the sub-tropical location makes this city hot and humid most of the year. You either love this or hate it. Ok, what makes this city such an interesting place? There are several factors that combine to make this a unique city and a great place to visit. How many places do you know where you can find an inviting westernised city in a communist country where coming ...
...an aeroplane? One must keep in mind that since the turn over of Hong Kong from British rule back to Chinese rule, Hong Kong is now once again part of commie China. Overview of the city Hong Kong is a large city consisting of two primary areas Kowloon Peninsula and Hong Kong Island (which is a few minutes by ferry from Kowloon) where most of the people live and work. There are several other islands and an area called New Territories, which borders ...

Not What I Imagined

Advantages: Interesting and lots to see.
Disadvantages: Seemed like a humid London to me.

I have just come back from Hong Kong. I travelled out to Asia with work, starting in Tokyo, then onto Hong Kong for two weekends in between spending my working week in China. I'm sure this will sound very negative and people will strongly disagree with me, but I was not impressed with Hong Kong. I won't say that I didn't like the place, but perhaps my timing was bad, coming directly from Tokyo, which was a fantastic place (please see Tokyo opinion), ...
...was not a comparable place. When I arrived in Hong Kong I was met by a limousine taxi, which I have to say was a great way to travel, this was laid on by my company and I wouldn't normally have travelled this way, the journey cost £45, the airport shuttle bus is around £10. When the driver pulled up at the hotel, he kindly pointed out to me that I could tip him if I was pleased with the service!!! I was flabbergasted and soon realised that everyone ...

Holidayer's Paradise

Advantages: You can haggle more or less anywhere, fantastic views, cheap goods, good transport system
Disadvantages: No cosumer rights, durian fruits(!), humid

I've only been to Hong Kong thrice in my life (only?!) but the most memorable time was the November of 2001. This was due to a few factors such as i was 18 at the time (the last times I went I was 9 and then again when I was 11) and I went predominantly for my cousin's wedding. Hong Kong is usually very hot throughout the entire year. This is good news for all you lobsters out there! But seriously folks, here's the main points of interest: (SHOPPING) ...
...which sell a broad range of souvenirs and clothes. Believe it or not, it's actually cheaper to buy new clothes than it is to get them washed at the launderette. Many small shops also offer a clothes altering service where you can leave your new trousers with them for a day (or pay $50hk and go back in 30 minutes) and they'll take them up to the required length. A great place to try shopping (and haggling, believe me, it works almost everywhere) is ...
