Advantages: Stunning scenery, friendly welcome, so much to see! Disadvantages: You have no choice but to drive - don't rely on public transport
The idea of a holiday in Canada was one that had crossed my mind a few times in the past, without me ever getting past the vague planning stage. It always seemed too far away, too expensive, or just too much like hard work... but then back in early 2008, I happened to see a mail from Condor offering cheap flights to destinations all over the world. Normally I wouldn't bother clicking on any of the links, but one line in particular caught my eye: ... ...there really were still seats available at that price - not during high season of course, but we'd heard that autumn on the eastern seaboard really is a great time to visit, so this was an offer we couldn't refuse. Should you be considering a visit to Nova Scotia, don't be put off by the idea of travelling outside of the traditional summer season. We had a fantastic time, enjoyed the brilliant scenery with warm and sunny weather in relative peace ...

Advantages: Less crowded than summer, still warm enough for teeshirts. Maple trees in all their glory. Disadvantages: Don't leave it too late, aim for early to mid October or places start to close.
You've all heard of New England in the Fall - well for sheer beauty and diverse scenery, go to Nova Scotia instead.
We landed at Halifax, easily arranged a large comfy hire car (with cruise control, it's worth it) and visited the very helpful visitor centre in the airport. Armed with map and guidebooks we set off for 9 days of discovery.
The region is divided into driving routes for convenience, we started with the Lighthouse trail along the southern ... ...Peggy's Cove, a gem of a tiny fishing village with pretty wooden houses and church, with a red and white lighthouse perched on the rocks above the sea, a good place for sunsets too.
All along the coast the views just got better and better, as each tiny cove and inlet unrolled next to the road, with lighthouses marking the way. It would be easy to spend your whole holiday around here, and why not? The locals are typically friendly and welcoming, and ...

Advantages: beautiful; peaceful; friendly; great food Disadvantages: may be a bit too quiet for some
Want a holiday in a quiet, beautiful place with friendly people, great beaches and lovely food? If so, Cape Breton Island may be for you!
Where is Cape Breton? Its an island (connected to the Nova Scotia mainland by a causeway) that forms the upper third of the province of Nova Scotia. Its about 300 miles to the major places in Cape Breton from Halifax so plan on staying a few days.
What is the scenery like? Cape Breton is very like Scotland, with ... ...and even Canada's best golf course if that is your thing.
Where should you go? The Cabot Trail - a good day's drive around the incomparably beautiful coast in Cape Breton Highlands National Park - is a must. It is one of the world's greatest scenic drives, and you may even get to see whales offshore too, if you are lucky. If you can afford it, plan on staying a night or two at the Keltic Lodge on the way. Its location is spectacular, the staff are ...

Advantages: the people and the land make the place what it is, its a stunny place to be. Disadvantages: Very widespread, and little Sunday shopping
What do you think of when you consider Nova Scotia? This is what i knew before i moved there.........it was far away from home! The thing about Canada is general is that it is a bit of a sleeping giant. the country is huge, and i think most Canadians don't know how big it really is, but on the East coast you will find Canada's Ocean Playground, Nova Scotia. The capital of NS is Halifax, the city i lived in for 5 years. Halifax is the main hub of ... ...ocean sweeping into the amazing harbour, and a downtown area that is vibrant, funky and caters to all ages. The province itself though simply follows suit. It has so much going for it, and it is all done in the Nova Scotian way. Relaxed, manored and with a good sense of honour. You won't go there for a long day of shopping. There are a few malls scattered around, but nothing to write home about. The people; however, are the main attraction. Nova ...

Advantages: Cool, growing, good seafood. Disadvantages: A city is a city is a city
We thought that Halifax was simply going to be a convenient base for our Nova Scotia holiday, how wrong we were. Halifax is a great place, a city which is obviously growing fast. It is lively and has a great waterfront area and a number of seafood restaurants. Our favourite was Salty's and yes, we got the TShirts. We spent an afternoon on a schooner in the harbour. Other places worth visiting are the excellent maritime museum and the citadel. We ...

Louisberg is the reconstruction of a French fortress on Cape Breton Island. Built mostly of wood, and on a grand scale, this is an impressive place to visit. You get a good impression of the grim life of its inhabitants, surrounded by mist, trees and swamplands, exposed to the sea and marauding raiders.
The site is busy. There are plenty of places to buy food and souveniers but the cafes are small. The site itself is a short bus ride from the visitor ...

Advantages: everything is walking distance Disadvantages: if you need to use a car, it could be stressfull
Halifax is a great place to just get away and relax in the summer. We usually go there at least once a year for a remantic weekend getaway. Just visiting all the shops and watching the boats while having a drink on the waterfront... It's better to not use your car, because some of the one way streets could be confusing. There are alot of tunnels that can lead you from the waterfront to 2 different hotels, restaurants...etc. Of course, don't forget ...
