Lions no tigers but bears oh my

Advantages: Beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: earthquake and volcano hotspot

I flew into Seattle, as this was the nearest direct route to Oregon. I travelled with BA from Heathrow at a cost of £488 return. On my arrival I was met by my pen-pal Julie and her friend Vivian. Check in went smmothly and I was through passport and immigration and had my bag within half an hour. We drove to Auburn a few miles away and checked in to a Comfort inn, where we staying overnight. This cost $34 per head with continental breakfast. After ...
...Muckleshoot Indian Casino. they offered an all you can eat buffet for $17, and it did mean all you can eat! There was a large selection of sea-food, meats, salads, fresh fruit, and gateaux and cheesecakes. Next we hit the casino. here you have to purchase cards which allow you to play the slots. I had given myself an allowance of $50 for the evening. If unsure as I was about the betting stakes on these machines ask someone or they will soon swallow ...

Don´t cali-fornicate

Advantages: the sea, the woods, the lakes, the deserts
Disadvantages: none

Although you won´t find a specific sign on Interstate 5 heading north from San Francisco this is an explicit warning for all those "intruders" from below the southern border to leave Oregon the way it is: laid back and unspoilt… Medford, ORE., was my destination back in 1968 as an 18 year old who had just graduated from Austrian high school and had been awarded with a one-year scholarship from American Field Service to stay with a host family ...
...Host brother Greg, who was my age, picked me up after classes and we rode around this southern Oregon town, I had the first Tacos and Enchiladas of my life, only the root-beer was hard to go with after I was used to have the one or other lager from the tap since I turned sixteen… The Arts Club spent its traditional beach weekend on the rugged coast near the Myrtlewood town of Bandon, where I experienced skim-boarding in the icy Pacific, a ...

The Beaver State

Advantages: Fantastic Scenery
Disadvantages: None

Seeing as I have had the urge to write travel reviews lately, I thought I would share with you my experiences of yet another part of Western America, and that is Oregon. Oregon is a coastal state. Indeed it has about four hundred miles of coastline. On the map, it is the state immediately below Washington, and immediately above California. I took a trip here to have a holiday at the home of my American CEO, who I had worked with in the UK and Australia ...
...and via Los Angeles into Portland Airport. I always flew around the world when on business, as it worked out a lot cheaper, and so I was able to build a holiday into the schedule. My hubby flew out from the UK, and I think his flight cost about £550 from the UK return. We were staying in Portland for one week only, unfortunately! Portland lies above the 45th line of latitude, indeed, I remember crossing this “line” as we drove south while touring ...

Halcyon Days & Hummingbirds.

Advantages: A trip back in time.
Disadvantages: Maybe too quiet for some.

After landing in Portland at mid-night, a 24 hour journey from Heathrow, a good nights sleep, followed by an onslaught of little bodies, four in all, to inspect this alien that arrived in the night to stay, jet lag just set in! However after a tasty breakfast of pancakes with strawberries, cream and maple syrup, (I declined the added bacon), I felt replenished and accepted the offer of a sightseeing drive around. We drove around Portland town, N.E. ...
...wouldn't get lost. With a town divided into four, You pick the quarter you need to be in, then count the streets along and down. You can't miss it! I was told. The wonderful modern stores, the shopping Mall with the great eating area in the basement, with just about every nationality displaying their food. a central eating area overlooking an indoor lake, and we were dining once more. The town has wide pedestrian walkways, with seating to listen ...

Coasting along...

Advantages: Great coast scenery
Disadvantages: Roads may be busy for cyclists

In the summer of 1999 I visited the west coast of America, after spending a week in California I went with my family on a cycle tour of the Oregon coastline. We flew into Portland airport, and cycled through the city. Although we didn't spend much time there, as we had to make it to a motel before dark, the city looked very pleasant, nice streets and buildings - A bit of character. We cycled along the main roads, as there were few smaller roads to ...
...at the side of the road the traffic was a little fast in places. We found an out-of-town motel, reasonable quality and a good price - And ate a quick later dinner at a fast-food place. We cycled down through Oregon to Albany, another nice town, where we stayed with friends. The scenery until that point was pleasant, but not spectacular, valleys and fields. After spending a quick break in Albany we cycled down the Oregon coast - The coast line is ...

Oregon, well worth a visit

Advantages: Cheap food and accommodation, friendly people and nice scenary
Disadvantages: Not very much history and widely spread out, so lots of travelling

Oregon is a beautiful state on the West Coast of the US. I visited the state on my first visit to the country and was pleasantly surprised. The towns are spread out and spacious. The grid system makes them tourist friendly. Shopping is adequate; Portland is actually pretty good for shopping and has a Nike shop that is worth a visit. Moving out of the towns, the countryside is truly breath taking. Forests litter the landscape, particularly in the ...
...and driving around the countryside is a pleasure. Head north to see Mt St Helens, where the scars left by the last eruption can still be seen on the once magnificent trees. Snow sports are good at the resort near Mt St Helens and can be indulged in all year around. The lodge is particularly pleasant. For a different type of landscape, venture south, towards California. You will come across the Rogue River. Plenty of tour operators run rides on the ...
