Well did a week in Singapore a few years ago and loved it I was on my own so I tend to judge a place by how safe i feel. The hotel i stayed in was the Peninsula lovely hotel huge room and very resonable rates booked it on Expedia. When I was flying in to Singapore there were numerous warnings that I would be executed if I had any drugs on me. Cathay Pacific warned the plane about Sinapore's special laws on litter, drugs and other crimes. This meant that I was very apprehensive of landing in this draconian regime. Disadvantages: It's hot so for us brits it takes a little getting used to!

I went to Singapore nearly a year ago and spent only a total of 5 days there either side of a holiday to a small an insignificant island about a 40minute ferry ride away. However it is somewhere I will always go back to whenever I am passing through that way, and I think as a stopover city it works perfectly. I went Singapore in 1997 by myself after my A-level exam. It's a backpack trip without any hotel booking in previous. The time I went was May, which is not a busy period for tourism. I found that quite easy to find some cheap place to stay. Some of the youth hostel, (I remembered one called 'Lee' something), is excellent for backpackers. Disadvantages: Broken Sleep, not much space

I travelled from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore on the overnight sleeper train taking around 9 hours in total. The departure time for the sleeper is usually around 22:30 arriving at 07:30 the next morning. The cost of the train depends if you are in the lower or the upper berth. I lived in Singapore for 6 yrs(due to my mum being a singaporean) and at first I hated it only because I found it too hot, full of mosquitos and being too strict.
