Advantages: Stunning scenery, pineapples are 10p!
Disadvantages: Can't safely see it all - roads are awful in places

Approaching by air, my first thought was "Wow! It's fantastic" - the initial reality of the Colombo Pegasus Beach hotel was some somewhat different especially the approach road through the local tip. However, it got better as our tour got under way. Anyone worried by tales of the civil war take heart - Colombo airport is probably about the most secure there is with complete baggage searches (by hand, not x-ray) and is surrounded by army checkpoints. Sri Lanka is often described as the world's most beautiful island, and I agree totally. Its has palm-fringed beaches, tea plantations, paddy fields, cool hill stations and thick jungle. But the cultural attractions are also highlights. Anuradhapura, with its huge buddhist shrines, Sirigaya, a rock fortress which dominates the surrounding jungle, and the tranquil lakeside town of Kandy are all worth the effort to visit. Sri Lanka, the place eveyone tells you is the most beautiful island in the world, and to an extent it is. If you wish to visit be prepared for what you will find and see. The beaches and hotels are full of splendor, most are all inclusive and that is not a good thing. Sri Lanka is cheap, cheap gems, cheap everything. There is nothing that can not be bartered for. Advantages: Treated like royalty on honeymoon

Fantastic! From the moment we stepped off the little minibus we were treated like royalty by the staff of the Blue Water - greeted with flower necklaces, cold flannels and cold juice. The staff were very friendly and the hotel was spotlessly clean. The trips on offer were brilliant value for money, and the sunbathing area was great because the breeze from the sea was a welcome change. What a fantastic place Sri Lanka is, everything you could want from a holiday with such a variety of things to do and see. Anyway I'm just reporting on the hotel we stayed at in beruwela, the Club Palm Garden. I have to say it was 'fit for purpose', I know it was only a 3 star. My first trip to Sri Lanka was in october 1997. We originally looked at India but were unable to find a package to suit so decided on Sri Lanka as 'second best'. Well, it was in no way second best.
